With a view to elucidate the general direction of my route, to mark the probable relative positions of the intervening towns or places which I passed in this journey, and to render the narrative of His Excellency Ibrahim Pacha's exploits more clear, I have affixed a route across Arabia from Katif to Yambo. During the first stages I was obliged to guess at the distances, not being as yet sufficiently acquainted with the pace and gait of the camel to form an idea of the rate at which we were moving; a few days' observation and timing the animal's pace enabled me to form a tolerably correct opinion, and thence deduce a rate for my general guidance, by calculating from the number of hours we were actually on the march. For marches not exceeding eight hours I calculated three miles an hour, and for inarches exceeding that number of hours I lessened the computed distance to two and half and to two and three-quarter miles per hour, making a deduction in some cases for hilly and rocky ground. The general direction of the line of march I took frequently with a very good compass, always alighting from my camel, its motion being too rough to admit of a compass being used even when in a walk. Prom Katif we proceeded by broken stages to Oomerrubeeah in the desert, and thence by a retrograde and circuitous route to Ul Ahsa, * from whence we returned very unexpectedly to Oomerrubeeah by a different route. Ou laying down the track thus far there does not appear to be any considerable error, as the distances and bearings which I had taken brought me within seven or eight miles of my first calculation. From this point we again set out with the intention of...

Book excerpt: Reprint of the classic account of Sadleir's memorable Journey across Arabia from east to west, which is his greatest claim to distinction. In the annals of Arabian travel, the name of George Forster Sadleir holds an honoured place, but it is known to few outside the narrow circle of historico-geographers, and even to them little or nothing is known of Sadleir's life, apart from the Diary of his trans-Arabian journey. He has no place in the D.N.B., but research shows that he has been undeservedly forgotten. In 1819 Sadleir made his memorable journey across Arabia from east to west, which is his greatest claim to distinction. It was the first recorded crossing of the Peninsula by a European and a feat of Arabian travel unequalled for nearly a hundred years or, to be exact, until Captain Shakespear's great journey in 1914. The journey, though of great value to geographers, interested Sadleir very little; he was, like Ibn Batuta, ''the traveller of Islam" and perhaps the greatest traveller of all time, a geographer malgre lui. His Diary was the report of a soldier trying to carry out certain orders. He was, indeed, the most objective of travellers. His own feelings and speculations were not within the terms of reference. In spite of illness and hardships of all kinds intense heat, lack of water, incompetent guides, exasperating delays and forced marches - he kept his Diary with scrupulous care, noticing the names of villages and tribes and the physical features of the country. He estimated the distances covered each day by the time spent on the march. This reprint of the 1866 edition of Sadleir's Diary of 1819 has benefitted from the inclusion of an introductory essay by F. M. Edwards which first appeared in The journal of the Royal Central Asian Society, vol. 44 (1957). Part of the Oleander Classics series, this title has been reproduced using the highest-quality modern scanning technology. This is done in order to keep important works from the Press's 50-year history from going out of print. In this way, the invaluable resources provided by this and other books in the series remain available for general readers, academics and other interested parties.

Book Synopsis Mecca by : F. E. Peters

Book excerpt: For the non-Muslim, Mecca is the most forbidden of Holy Cities--and yet, in many ways it is the best known. Muslim historians and geographers have studied it, and countless pilgrims and travelers--many of them European Christians in disguise--have left behind lively and well-publicized accounts of life in Mecca and its associated shrine-city of Medina, where the Prophet lies buried. The stories of all these figures, holy men and heathens alike, come together in this book to offer a remarkably revealing literary portrait of the city's traditions and urban life and of the surrounding area. Closely following the publication of F. E. Peters's The Hajj (Princeton, 1994), which describes the perilous pilgrimage itself from the travelers' perspectives, this collection of writings and commentary completes the historical travelogue. The accounts begin with the Muslims themselves, in the patriarchal age of Abraham and Ishmael, and trace the sometimes glorious and sometimes sad history of Islam's central shrine down to the last Grand Sharif of Mecca, Husayn ibn Ali, whose fragile kingdom was overtaken by the House of Sa`ud in 1926. Because of chronic flooding and constant rebuilding, there is little or no material evidence for the early history of Islam's holy cities. By assembling, analyzing, and fashioning these literary accounts of Mecca, however, Peters supplies us with a vivid sense of place and human interaction, much as he did in his widely acclaimed Jerusalem (Princeton, 1985). Originally published in 1994. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
