Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diary of a Grieving Mother is just what it says. The inside looks into the mind of a newly bereaved mother. There is no filter, it is raw, and it is real. In this book, Emily Carpenter tells the story of what led her to be a grieving mother. She tells her story and shares the most intimate thoughts she had in the throes of her early grief experience—the good, the bad, the ugly, and the hideous. She shares this with the world in hopes of letting other grieving mothers know they are not crazy, their feelings are valid, and society has it all wrong. It takes a grieving mother to understand a grieving mother and the pain that we will carry for the rest of our lives.

Book excerpt: "In the sentence ‘She's no longer suffering,' to what, to whom does ‘she' refer? What does that present tense mean?" —Roland Barthes, from his diary The day after his mother's death in October 1977, Roland Barthes began a diary of mourning. For nearly two years, the legendary French theorist wrote about a solitude new to him; about the ebb and flow of sadness; about the slow pace of mourning, and life reclaimed through writing. Named a Top 10 Book of 2010 by The New York Times and one of the Best Books of 2010 by Slate and The Times Literary Supplement, Mourning Diary is a major discovery in Roland Barthes's work: a skeleton key to the themes he tackled throughout his life, as well as a unique study of grief—intimate, deeply moving, and universal.

Book excerpt: The Death of a child. Bearing the unbearable. A journey of faith. The complex questions, experiences, and emotions that accompany grief are painfully isolating. Seize this rare opportunity to intimately journey alongside a grieving mother through the first seven years of grief. Candidly confront many painful yet common struggles of grief, and reconcile shattering loss with faith in God June 8, 2017, Scott and Karen Harmening's seventeen-year-old daughter, Sarah, was killed in a tragic church bus crash outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Scott was driving behind the bus and watched helplessly as it crossed into the adjacent lane striking another vehicle, sharply overcorrected, and then flipped across the interstate. After crawling through the wreckage to get to Sarah, he frantically called Karen to tell her to pray for Sarah who was pinned beneath the wreckage. Karen and their remaining daughters prayed together and hurriedly began the three-and-a-half hour drive from Huntsville, Alabama, to Scott and Sarah; only to learn upon their arrival that Sarah had died hours before. Karen, a Christian writer and blogger, immediately began writing to process the excruciating questions, experiences, and emotions that accompany the death of a child; Sifted is the collected work of seven years of writings. With raw honesty, explore the depths of the valley of the shadow of death with her to reconcile shattering loss with faith in God. Witness the unexpectedly sweet mingling of sorrow with hope and peace. And discover, deep in the shadowed valley, a costly joy rendered by sorrow so pure and precious that it is "inexpressible and full of glory." Highlights: -One hundred entries written over a span of seven years -Each entry is a transparent account of wrestling through a specific question, experience, or struggle related to grief -Entries may be read in chronological order or topically by using the included topical index -If you are grieving-read and be encouraged you are not alone -If you love someone who is grieving-read to better understand suffering and grief -If you love stories of faith triumphing in adversity-read and be blessed Explore topics such as: -Understanding Grief -Hard Questions Like "What If?" and "Why?" -Surviving the Many Hard Days and Dates -Finding Hope -Finding Joy -Loneliness and Abandonment -Spiritual Warfare -Will It Ever Get Better?

I didn't want to continue living. Even though I had my daughter and younger son, it did not make me feel any better. I did not know what to do to make them feel better. How could I continue on without him? What would I do to become whole again? I had two choices. I could either succumb to depression or live for him. I decided to live for him. I decided that I wanted to do what he could not and so my journey began. I learned a lot from my son after his death. Even in death he was teaching me what I did not know. I wanted to live for my son - as he would have. I wanted my daughter and younger son to heal. I embarked on this journey for myself, my family and in memory of Richie.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a grief counselor and educator, this book is for those who have loved and lost their mother. Losing a mother is a difficult transition in life. No matter the status of the relationship, grieving the loss is a process--one that sometimes begins before the physical loss has occurred. Drawing on his own experience of loss, as well as on the experiences of others, Harold Ivan Smith guides readers through their grief, from the process of dying through the acts of remembering and honoring a mother after her death. This book provides a way forward. By shifting the grief process from something to rush through, Smith encourages readers to embrace their grief as a natural response to loss and to give themselves time to work through the sadness, pain, memories, and reality of living without their mom. All of us will experience the loss of our mother at some point. A mother's last breath inevitably changes us. Through wise counsel, Smith speaks gently to people who have gone through this loss and helps those yet to face it. This edition includes a new foreword from the author.

Book excerpt: "Anguished, beautifully written... The Long Goodbye is an elegiac depiction of drama as old as life." -- The New York Times Book Review From one of America's foremost young literary voices, a transcendent portrait of the unbearable anguish of grief and the enduring power of familial love. What does it mean to mourn today, in a culture that has largely set aside rituals that acknowledge grief? After her mother died of cancer at the age of fifty-five, Meghan O'Rourke found that nothing had prepared her for the intensity of her sorrow. In the first anguished days, she began to create a record of her interior life as a mourner, trying to capture the paradox of grief-its monumental agony and microscopic intimacies-an endeavor that ultimately bloomed into a profound look at how caring for her mother during her illness changed and strengthened their bond. O'Rourke's story is one of a life gone off the rails, of how watching her mother's illness-and separating from her husband-left her fundamentally altered. But it is also one of resilience, as she observes her family persevere even in the face of immeasurable loss. With lyricism and unswerving candor, The Long Goodbye conveys the fleeting moments of joy that make up a life, and the way memory can lead us out of the jagged darkness of loss. Effortlessly blending research and reflection, the personal and the universal, it is not only an exceptional memoir, but a necessary one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a beloved one dies, a lot of thoughts run through our mind and like a raging storm with waves upon waves, these thoughts threaten to drown us. We mostly do not know how to proceed from this sort of situation. It's like a sinking mud. Once a person enters into it, they do not know where to start from. The ones who survive often have help from the outside who points a stick or rope towards them, and then they can focus their thoughts on survival. For others who have no source of hope anywhere, they begin to beat around until they start to sink into the mud slowly.I use this illustration because that was how I felt. It was a very confusing time for me. I started to beat around until help in the form of my support system showed up. It gave me hope that this was not the way it was meant to end. I could still overcome it. And after that, God Himself showed up and tossed me the stick/rope that hauled me out of that mud. Not everyone is that fortunate, but Christians are. As Christians, we are fortunate to have a path towards survival which is God.One of the major reasons I wrote this book is to be able to share my experience with others who are going through the same loss or who have people around them that have gone through same. At the point when I lost my son, I had nobody's experience to relate with. There was nobody to assure me that I have gone through same and I survived and you can too. I felt like nobody could understand. This is the sort of book I wished I had when my son died. Being able to share from the experience of others who have experienced such trauma as I would have been a motivation towards living life. I wished I had something that could have reminded me of the constant nature of God through sorrow and pain and tragedy and loss. Something that I could relate with. It is my prayer that someone can come across this book and come into the revelation I did and get the strength to forge ahead on his/her path.Overall, another reason I wrote the book is so that Christians can understand that they have an option, an alternative to the oppressing hands of emotional downfall. Christians should know that they can go through fire and come out unscathed because they have a God who has endowed them with the strength to go through the storms of life. In the bible is the complete arsenal of a Christian. Everything you need to understand times, seasons and your different challenges have been outlined in the Bible for you. All you just need is to spend time with the word of God. There are 365 fear nots in the bible. Each one for each day to remind you of the fact that He has completed all concerning you and that there is nothing you need to fear again. So, cast away your fears and your burdens and trust on God, only then can you live life completely.
