Book Synopsis Evidentiality and Epistemological Stance by : Ilana Mushin
Download or read book Evidentiality and Epistemological Stance written by Ilana Mushin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the discourse pragmatics of reportive evidentiality in Macedonian, Japanese and English through an empirical study of evidential strategies in narrative retelling. The patterns of evidential use (and non-use) found in these languages are attributed to contextual, cultural and grammatical factors that motivate the adoption of an 'epistemological stance' - a concept that owes much to recent trends in Cognitive Linguistics. The patterns of evidential strategies found in the three languages provide a fine illustration of the balancing act between speakers' expressions of their own subjectivity, their motivations to tell a coherent and exciting story, and their motivations to be faithful retellers of someone elses' story. These pressures are further complicated by the grammatical and pragmatic conventions that are particular to each language. Evidentiality and Epistemological Stance: narrative retelling will appeal to those interested in evidentiality, grammar and pragmatics, cross-linguistics discourse analysis, linguistic subjectivity and narrative.

Download or read book Plataforma written by and published by Turner (Spain). This book was released on 2007 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From November 2006 to January 2007, Plataforma Puebla took over the oldest factory in Mexico, La Constancia in Puebla, for a large-scale exhibition showcasing more than 60 Latin American artists. The curators charted an artistic cartography of the city around the site, and made interventions that spilled over into the streets--altering traffic, inviting viewers to reevaluate the roles of landmarks, and highlighting connections between the landscape and its past. They connected viewers to alternate narratives that would otherwise have passed unnoticed, giving them a new experience of the same place without erasing or overwriting the existing one. Plataforma Puebla 2006 showcases participants including Teresa Margolles, Santiago Sierra, Francis Alÿs, Carlos Amorales, Thomas Glassford, Gabriel Orozco, Daniel Guzmán, Damián Ortega and Melanie Smith. It also includes essays on art and technology by curators Príamo Lozada and Bárbara Perea and additional texts by a host of international theorists, art historians, philosophers and the artists themselves.

Book Synopsis Quixotic Memories by : Julia Dominguez
Download or read book Quixotic Memories written by Julia Dominguez and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of Miguel de Cervantes – one of the most influential writers in early modern Europe – is a reflection of the rich culture of memory in which it was created. More than a theme, memory is a system of understanding in Cervantes’s world, resulting from the major social, religious, and economic changes that epitomized Renaissance humanist culture and that informed the transition to modernity. Quixotic Memories offers insight into the plurality and complexity of memory and demonstrates how it plays an exceptionally critical role in Cervantes’s Don Quixote. It acknowledges Cervantes’s transition into modernity as he engaged with theories of memory that were developed in classical antiquity and adapted to the specific circumstances of his own time. Julia Domínguez explores the many spaces that memory created for itself in early modern Spain, particularly in the fields of philosophy, medicine, rhetoric, mnemotechnics, the visual arts, and pedagogy. Engaging with primary and archival sources, Quixotic Memories provides a new reading of Cervantes’s famous novel by tracing the socio-historical and cultural prominence of memory throughout the author’s lifetime.
