Book Synopsis The State, Literacy, and Popular Education in Chile, 1964-1990 by : Robert Austin
Download or read book The State, Literacy, and Popular Education in Chile, 1964-1990 written by Robert Austin and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular education and adult literacy movements in Chile have historically represented competing paths toward a literate society: one born and nurtured through bitter nineteenth-century labor struggles, the other a compensatory effort by the modern state to limit the political potential of literacy. Robert Austin's book explores the contest between the state and popular education in three paradigmatic Latin American regimes: that of Eduardo Frei Montalva (Christian Democrat, 1964-70), Salvador Allende (Socialist, 1970-73) and Augusto Pinochet (Dictator, 1973-90). Robert Austin's engaging narrative captures the relationship between the Chilean state, formal and non-formal literacy, and popular education, from the demise of liberal capitalism to the consolidation of neoliberalism. This remarkable investigation of the dynamic link between the historical process, literacy, and pedagogy celebrates popular education's victory in securing the inclusion, and subsequent empowerment, of women and ethnic minorities. The State, Literacy, and Popular Education in Chile, 1964-1990 will be of great interest to political scientists, cultural historians, and scholars of education.

Book Synopsis The Nurturing of New Educational Researchers by : María de Ibarrola
Download or read book The Nurturing of New Educational Researchers written by María de Ibarrola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five educational researchers, coming from a variety of higher education institutions, academic disciplines, and cultural backgrounds, met together over a three-year period to discuss the present and future of doctoral education and training in the field of education. Their hope was that the product of their discussions would enable educators and policy makers around the world to rethink, restructure, and even design new programs to prepare the rising generation of educational researchers in their countries. These differences in academic, national, and institutional perspectives led to a variety of ways, even conflicting ones, in which the quality of doctoral education and training could be improved. Based on our discussion, we came to the conclusion that there are no universal solutions to the problems involved in setting up and operating a quality doctoral program. Rather, educators would be wise to be aware of the alternatives at their disposal and make informed choices based on an understanding of the larger societal and political contexts in their states, regions, or nations. To facilitate this decision-making process, we have chosen to conclude with a set of key questions that should be addressed by those seeking to examine and improve their doctoral programs in education and briefly describe some of the alternative ways of answering these questions. Instead of passively absorbing a unified position, then, the reader is invited to join the dialogue that has taken place (and is still taking place) between and among the authors. To exemplify such a dialogue, each chapter is followed by one or two commentaries written by members of the group. We would encourage the reader to write commentaries on the individual chapters (and perhaps the commentaries), thereby engaging in a dialogue with the authors on a fairly personal level.
Book Synopsis Learning across Generations in Europe by : Bernhard Schmidt Hertha
Download or read book Learning across Generations in Europe written by Bernhard Schmidt Hertha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Learning across generations in Europe: Contemporary issues in older adult education constitutes an important book in the emergent field of study of older adult learning. The book gives a clear and wide overview on the different concepts, ideas, and meanings, related to older adults’ education, learning and intergenerational learning through strong theoretical standpoints, empirical research, and policy directions. The field of older adult education has expanded immensely in recent years since it raised questions that are connected to a rapidly ageing society in very turbulent times of economic and social changes in Europe. This book provides the basis for an in-depth analysis of the understandings and interpretations of education and learning in later-life, rethinking the development of different approaches for education of older adults, as well as diverse research and evaluation of different forms of older adults’ education and learning. It brings together both orthodox approaches to educational gerontology and older adult learning on important emerging issues faced by educators around the globe. The chapters address the contemporary differentiated discussion on diverse phenomena labelled ranging from intergenerational learning to older men learning, providing robust impulses for the development of further theoretical and empirical research on older adult and intergenerational learning. It is the editors’ intention that this collection of papers acts as a persuasive argument for formal and non-formal learning agencies to open more doors for older adults. Bernhard Schmidt-Hertha Ph.D. is Full Professor of educational science with focus on continuing education and further vocational training at Institute of Education, University of Tuebingen. His research and writings address the topics of adult education, intergenerational learning, informal adult learning, and higher education Sabina Jelenc Krašovec Ph.D. is Associate Professor of adult education within the Department of Educational Sciences, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. Her research and writings focus on the education of vulnerable adults, and more recently, on older adult learning in the community and non-formal contexts. Marvin Formosa Ph.D. is co-ordinator of the Gerontology Unit, Faculty for Social Wellbeing, University of Malta. Recent publications include Lifelong Learning in Later Life: A Handbook on Older Adult Learning (with Brian Findsen, 2011) and Population Ageing in Malta: Multidisciplinary Perspectives (with Charles Scerri, 2015). Book Synopsis Diálogos. Taylor Charles y Bernstein Richard con Daniel Gamper by : Charles Taylor
Download or read book Diálogos. Taylor Charles y Bernstein Richard con Daniel Gamper written by Charles Taylor and published by Editorial GEDISA. This book was released on 2017-09 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
