Ma questo aldilà si colora di sfumature che preludono all’ontologia matura di Platone: è il mondo della polis, formato da larve dotate di una empeiria elusiva, che sfugge alle prese del sapere oggettivo. Oltre quella soglia, Socrate trova insomma la caverna di Platone, teatrino di ombre in cui tuttavia il filosofo ha il dovere di combattere come meglio può. Il motivo del duello verbale (agon logon) era centrale tanto nella commedia antica quanto nelle esibizioni pubbliche dei sofisti. Con un occhio alle Nuvole, Platone fonde queste due tradizioni in una mirabile unità drammatica, che incarna nel vivo dell’azione la minaccia mortale rappresentata da Protagora, il cui pensiero appare irriducibile alla prospettiva socratico-platonica.
