Book Synopsis Catherine of Siena by : Thomas McDermott
Download or read book Catherine of Siena written by Thomas McDermott and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Catherine of Siena was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970, relatively little attention has been given to her mystical thought, particularly in the English-speaking world. The Dialogue, the famous compendium of her mature thought, is difficult to understand owing to its interruptions, repetitions, overlapping arguments, imagery and undefined terms. Thomas McDermott breaks new ground in his systematic presentation of Catherine¿s teachings. Drawing on the Dialogue and also on Catherine¿s 381 letters and prayers, he explains clearly her principal teachings in relation to spiritual development, and identifies Catherine¿s possible sources as well as her areas of originality. By examining Catherine¿s life and mystical experiences, McDermott shows how she herself grew spiritually and how her growth corresponds to her later teaching on the ¿three stairs¿ on the ¿bridge of Christ crucified.¿ Finally, the author puts forward what he regards as the fundamental message of Catherine¿s life and teaching. Students of mysticism and spirituality will find this book a trustworthy guide through the incredibly rich mysticism of one of the 14th century¿s most amazing women.

This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 1184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors – Dante Alighieri, Machiavelli, and Boccaccio – and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature.

This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edith Stein is widely known as a historical figure, a victim of the Holocaust and a saint, but still unrecognised as a philosopher. It was philosophy, however, that constituted the core of her life. Today her complete writings are available to scholars and therefore her thinking can be properly investigated and evaluated. Who is a human person? And what is his or her dignity according to Edith Stein? Those are the two leading questions investigated in this volume. The answer is presented based on the complete writings of the 20th-c. phenomenologist and, moreover, compared to the traditional Christian understanding of human dignity present in the writings of the Church Fathers and the Doctors of the Church as well as Magisterial Documents of the Catholic Church. In the final parts of the book, the author shows how Stein's ideas are relevant today, in particular to the ongoing doctrinal and legal debates over the concept of human dignity.

Book Synopsis Hellish Imaginations from Augustine to Dante by : Alastair Minnis
Download or read book Hellish Imaginations from Augustine to Dante written by Alastair Minnis and published by Society for the Study of Medieval Languages and Literature. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval literature and art abounds in descriptions of grotesque torments (punitive in hell, redemptive in purgatory) being meted out to the unhappy dead. But how can pain be experienced in the absence of the body? Can the main agents of suffering specified in Old Testament prophecies, fire and the worm, actually trouble a disembodied soul? The relative merits of material and metaphorical understandings of the economy of pain were debated throughout the Middle Ages, and extended far beyond, surviving the abolition of purgatory within Protestantism. This book brings to life many of the intellectual clashes, beginning with Augustine’s foundational yet troubling doctrines, proceeding to the problems caused by Aristotle’s insistence that death kills off all sense and sensation, and culminating in a fresh reading of Dante’s Purgatorio, Canto XXV. Wide-ranging, lucid and bristling with ideas on every page, it illustrates superbly well the variety, liveliness and continuous creativity of scholastic thought, particularly in respect of the contribution it made to literary theory.
Book Synopsis Women, Family, and Society in Medieval Europe by : David Herlihy
Download or read book Women, Family, and Society in Medieval Europe written by David Herlihy and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until his untimely death in 1991, David Herlihy, Professor of History at Brown University, was one of the most prolific and best-known American historians of the European Middle Ages. Author of books on the history of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Italy, Herlihy published, in 1978, his best-known work in collaboration with Christine Klapisch-Zuber, Les Toscans et leurs familles (Translated into English in 1985, and Italian in 1988). For the last dozen or so years of his life, Herlihy launched a series of ambitious projects, on the history ofwomen and the family, and on the collective behavior of social groups in medieval Europe. While he completed two important books - on the family (1985) and on women's work (1991) - he did not find the time to bring these other major projects to a conclusion. This volume contains essays he wrote after 1978. They convey a sense of the enormous intellectual energy and great erudition that characterized David Herlihy's scholarly career. They also chart a remarkable historian's intellectual trajectory, as he searched for new and better ways of asking a set of simple and basic questions about the history of the family, the institution within which the vast majority of Europeans spent so much of their lives. Because of his qualities as a scholar and a teacher, during his relatively brief career Herlihy was honored with Presidencies of the four major scholarly associations with which he was affiliated: the Catholic Historical Association, the Medieval Academy of America, the Renaissance Society of America, and the American Historical Association.
Book Synopsis Fruit of the Orchard by : Jennifer N. Brown
Download or read book Fruit of the Orchard written by Jennifer N. Brown and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fruit of the Orchard sheds light on how Catherine of Siena served as a visible and widespread representative of English piety becoming a part of the devotional landscape of the period. By analyzing a variety of texts, including monastic and lay, complete and excerpted, shared and private, author Jennifer N. Brown considers how the visionary prophet and author was used to demonstrate orthodoxy, subversion, and heresy. Tracing the book tradition of Catherine of Siena, as well as investigating the circulation of manuscripts, Brown explores how the various perceptions of the Italian saint were reshaped and understood by an English readership. By examining the practice of devotional reading, she reveals how this sacred exercise changed through a period of increased literacy, the rise of the printing press, and religious turmoil.
Book Synopsis A History of Women Philosophers by : M.E. Waithe
Download or read book A History of Women Philosophers written by M.E. Waithe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1989-12-31 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: aspirations, the rise of western monasticism was the most note worthy event of the early centuries. The importance of monasteries cannot be overstressed as sources of spirituality, learning and auto nomy in the intensely masculinized, militarized feudal period. Drawing their members from the highest levels of society, women's monasteries provided an outlet for the energy and ambition of strong-willed women, as well as positions of considerable authority. Even from periods relatively inhospitable to learning of all kinds, the memory has been preserved of a good number of women of education. Their often considerable achievements and influence, however, generally lie outside even an expanded definition of philo sophy. Among the most notable foremothers of this early period were several whose efforts signal the possibility of later philosophical work. Radegund, in the sixth century, established one of the first Frankish convents, thereby laying the foundations for women's spiritual and intellectual development. From these beginnings, women's monasteries increased rapidly in both number and in fluence both on the continent and in Anglo-Saxon England. Hilda (d. 680) is well known as the powerful abbsess of the double monastery of Whitby. She was eager for knowledge, and five Eng lish bishops were educated under her tutelage. She is also accounted the patron of Caedmon, the first Anglo-Saxon poet of religious verse. The Anglo-Saxon nun Lioba was versed in the liberal arts as well as Scripture and canon law.
