Book excerpt: The Hidden Italy is the first bilingual English edition of some of the best Italian dialect poetry written over the past two centuries. The selection of more than four hundred poems in Piedmontese, Venetian, Milanese, Romagnol, Roman, Neapolitan, Sicilian, and other dialects illustrates the impressive variety of Italy's literary and linguistic civilization. Italian dialect literature originated in the Renaissance, after Tuscan had won its preeminence as the officially sanctioned Italian literary language. Despite the official victory of Tuscan, however, many writers consciously preferred and chose their own regional or local dialects as their medium of literary expression. This departure from Tuscan became a particularly significant phenomenon in the 18th century and has continued up to the present day. Much of the poetry is characterized by its realistic portrayals of the lower classes, their suffering from social injustice and poverty, the simplicity of their approach to life, particularly to earthy, sensual experience. Many poets use or create a language that is mimetic, expressive, often unabashedly obscene and irreverent. The dialect becomes the language of pain and anger, of biting satire or political rebellion, of humor and meditation. It is also the language which reveals the spirit of Italy's diverse regional civilizations. Haller's literal prose translations and commentaries are aimed at leading the reader back to the original text. and its intrinsic flavor. Thus the book has appeal and importance both for poetry lovers in general and for people with a special interest in Italian linguistic and literary culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twentieth Century Poetic Translation analyses translations of Italian and English poetry and their roles in shaping national identities by merging historical, cultural and theoretical perspectives. Focusing on specific case studies within the Italian, English and North American literary communities, spanning from ‘authoritative' translations of poets by poets to the role of dialect poetry and anthologies of poetry, the book looks at the role of translation in the development of poetic languages and in the construction of poetic canons. It brings together leading scholars in the history of the Italian language, literary historians and translators, specialists in theory of translation and history of publishing to explore the cultural dynamics between poetic traditions in Italian and English in the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These articles provide new explorations into phonological patterns attested in the minor Romance languages ('dialects') spoken in Italy. The goal of this book is both theoretical and empirical. First, it aims to introduce non-Italianists to the phonological structures of the Italian dialects, including northern Gallo-Romance dialects, central and southern dialects, plus a Francoprovencal dialect spoken in southern Italy and a Catalan dialect spoken in Sardinia. Second, the collection provides readers with sophisticated analyses of complex and poorly understood and under-studied phonological phenomena. Over half of the articles contain data collected by the authors, and most of the data have not been available in English language publications. The richness of the empirical material and the sophistication of the theoretical analyses make this collection a particularly important contribution to both phonology and Romance language studies.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2006 Pietro Di Donato and John Fante Literary Award from The Grand Lodge of the Sons of Italy, New York State Robert Viscusi takes a comprehensive look at Italian American writing by exploring the connections between language and culture in Italian American experience and major literary texts. Italian immigrants, Viscusi argues, considered even their English to be a dialect of Italian, and therefore attempted to create an American English fully reflective of their historical, social, and cultural positions. This approach allows us to see Italian American purposes as profoundly situated in relation not only to American language and culture but also to Italian nationalist narratives in literary history as well as linguistic practice. Viscusi also situates Italian American writing within the "eccentric design" of American literature, and uses a multidisciplinary approach to read not only novels and poems, but also houses, maps, processions, videos, and other artifacts as texts.

Book excerpt: Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors – Dante Alighieri, Machiavelli, and Boccaccio – and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achille Serrao, who writes in the dialect of Caivano, a small town in Campania, in this book deals with his own «anxiety of influence» vis-à-vis the great melodic tradition of Neapolitan poetry, exemplarily represented by Salvatore Di Giacomo, by reclaiming instead another, antimelodic, anti-subjective legacy, from Basile to Capurro to Russo. The result is a poetry of striking originality and power, in which the painful incomprehensibility of life is affirmed with a language that can be sharp and refractory, yet subtle and elegant, confirming Serrao's position as one of Italy's foremost neo-dialect poets.
