Book Synopsis Diagnostic Tools in Atmospheric Physics by : Società italiana di fisica
Download or read book Diagnostic Tools in Atmospheric Physics written by Società italiana di fisica and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses a number of experimental techniques and methods for the treatment of data introduced in the last ten years or so in different fields of the atmospheric sciences. Considerable emphasis has been given since their introduction to the use of satellites or spaceborne measurements with a recent example being the important results obtained with UARS. Of particular interest are the airborne instruments developed for the stratospheric measurement campaign organized by the NASA since 1976 to study the ozone hole and followed later by similar experiments to study the high-latitude ozone depletion in the northern hemisphere. The results of these experiments have helped clarify the role of chlorine-bearing compounds in the ozone depletion and the effect of the heterogeneous processes. The book is organized in 4 chapters: the first 3 divide the different techniques according to the location of the measuring instrumentation (ground, air and space) with the 4th chapter dealing with theory and analysis.

Book Synopsis Selected Topics in Non Perturbative QCD by : Società italiana di fisica
Download or read book Selected Topics in Non Perturbative QCD written by Società italiana di fisica and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses aspects of QCD which are related to its underlying structure as a field theory and to its mechanisms. Perturbative expansions do not work at large distances for QCD: the hadron spectrum, the confinement of colour, its deconfinement at high temperatures and the breaking of chiral symmetry all need nonperturbative methods of analysis. Sum rules, chiral perturbation theory and the formulation of QCD on a lattice are some of the tools used to test models, like the stochastic vacuum, the instanton liquid or the consideration of monopoles in the vacuum to produce dual superconductivity and confinement. The work covers different points of view and critical comparison between the different approaches. It can be considered a good reference text.

Book Synopsis Metrology and Physical Constants by : A. Di Giuseppe
Download or read book Metrology and Physical Constants written by A. Di Giuseppe and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reliability and accuracy of systems of measurement continue to advance. We are about to enter a period of the most stable measurement system we can imagine with the anticipated new definitions of the SI units of measurement; a direct link between fundamental physics and metrology which will eliminate the current definition of the kilogram, until now based upon an artifact. This book presents selected papers from Course 185 of the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics, held in Varenna, Italy, in July 2012 and jointly organized with the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). The papers delivered at the school covered some of the most advanced topics in the discipline of metrology, including nano-technologies; quantum information and quantum devices; biology and medicine; food; surface quality; ionising radiation for health, environment, art and archaeology; and climate. The continuous and striking advances in basic research concerning atomic frequency standards operating both in the visible range and at microwave levels and the applications to satellite systems are also considered, in the framework of a historical review of the international organization of metrology, as are the problems inherent in uncertainty statements and definitions. This book will be of interest to all those whose work involves scientific measurement at the highest levels of accuracy.
Book Synopsis Condensazione Di Bose-Einstein Nei Gas Atomici by : M. Inguscio
Download or read book Condensazione Di Bose-Einstein Nei Gas Atomici written by M. Inguscio and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although first proposed by Einstein in 1924, Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a gas was not achieved until 1995 when, using a combination of laser cooling and trapping, and magnetic trapping and evaporation, it was first observed in rubidium and then in lithium and sodium, cooled down to extremely low temperatures. This book brought together many leaders in both theory and experiment on Bose-Einstein condensation in gases. Their lectures provided a detailed coverage of the experimental techniques for the creation and study of BEC, as well as the theoretical foundation for understanding the properties of this novel system. This volume provides the first systematic review of the field and the many developments that have taken place in the past three years.
Book Synopsis Quantum Phenomena in Mesoscopic Systems by : B. L. Alʹtshuler
Download or read book Quantum Phenomena in Mesoscopic Systems written by B. L. Alʹtshuler and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a snapshot of the vision shared by outstanding scientists on the key theoretical and experimental issues in Mesoscopic Physics. Quantum properties of electrons in solid state devices and transport in semiconducting and superconducting low-dimensional systems, are discussed, as well as the basis of quantum computing (entanglement, noise decoherence and read-out). Each chapter collects the material presented at a Varenna School course of last year, by leading experts in the field. The reader gets a flavour of how theorists and experimentalists are paving the way to the physical realization of solid state qubits, the basic units of the new logic and memory elements for quantum processing. He will be surprised in finding that mesoscopic solid state devices, which were invented only yesterday (think of the Single Electron Transistor, or the Cooper Pair Box) are currently used as charge-sensing applications in the equipment of frontier research laboratories. These devices contribute as probing systems to produce evidence on still unsettled questions in topics like the metal-insulator transition in disordered two dimensional systems, quantum Hall conductance in heterostructur"
Book Synopsis Measurements of Neutrino Mass by : F. Ferroni
Download or read book Measurements of Neutrino Mass written by F. Ferroni and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2009-09-29 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a valuable insight into various aspects of the ongoing work directed at measuring neutrino mass. It took twenty years to refute the assertions of Bethe and Peierls that neutrinos were not observable, but it has since been realised that much can be learnt from these particles. The moral is, as Fiorini argues here, that the study of neutrinos was and remains demanding but rewarding. Subjects addressed in this volume include; clarifying the meaning of the Klapdor-Kleingrothaus results, probing the Majorana nature of neutrinos, observing lepton number violating effects for the first time, studying the end point of the spectrum in the search for neutrino masses and speculating whether it is possible to measure neutrino masses in cosmology. Lectures are enriched with rich historical overviews and valuable introductory material. Attention is also given to theoretical topics such as the evolution of the concept of mass in particle physics, a status report on neutrino oscillations and current discussion on neutrino masses. The reader is further reminded that neutrino masses may also have some bearing on the very origin of the matter among us, and have many deep links with other important lines of current physics research.
Book Synopsis Positron Spectroscopy of Solids by : Alfredo Dupasquier
Download or read book Positron Spectroscopy of Solids written by Alfredo Dupasquier and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lifetime of a positron inside a solid is normally less than a fraction of nanosecond. This is a very short time on a human scale, but is long enough to enable the positron to visit an extended region of the material, and to sense the atomic and electronic structure of the environment. Thus, we can inject a positron in a sample to draw from it some signal giving us information on the microscopic properties of the material. This idea has been successfully developed in a number of positron-based techniques of physical analysis, with resolution in energy, momentum, or position. The complex of these techniques is what we call now positron spectroscopy of solids. The field of application of the positron spectroscopy extends from advanced problems of solid-state physics to industrial applications in the area of characterization of high-tech materials. This volume focuses the attention on the physics that can be learned from positron-based methods, but also frames those methods in a wider context including other experimental approaches. It can be considered as a textbook on positron spectroscopy of solids, the sort of book that the newcomer takes for his approach to this field, but also as a useful research tool for the expert.
Book Synopsis Protein Folding and Drug Design by : Luis Serrano Romero
Download or read book Protein Folding and Drug Design written by Luis Serrano Romero and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great unsolved problems of science and also of physics is the prediction of the three dimensional structure of a protein from its amino acid sequence. It may be stated that the deep connection existing between physics and protein folding is not so much, or in any case not only, through physical methods, but through physical concepts.

Book Synopsis Geomagnetic Diagnosis of the Magnetosphere by : A. Nishida
Download or read book Geomagnetic Diagnosis of the Magnetosphere written by A. Nishida and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geomagnetic field observed on the surface of the earth has been an important source of information on the dynamic behavior of the magnetosphere. Because the· magnetosphere and its environment are filled with plasma in which electric current can easily flow, dynamic processes that occur in the magnetosphere tend to produce perturba tions in the geomagnetic field. Geomagnetic data have therefore pro vided valuable means for sensing the processes taking place at remote locations, and such basic concepts as the magnetosphere, solar wind, and trapped radiation were derived in early, presatellite days from geomagnetic analyses. Because of this advantage, geomagnetic observations have been widely utilized for monitoring the overall condition of the magneto sphere. Although the advent of space vehides has made it possible to observe magnetospheric processes in situ, supplementary information on the overall magnetospheric condition is frequently found to be indispensable for interpreting these observations in the proper perspec tive. Hence for magnetospheric physicists involved in various branches of the field it has become a common practice to employ geomagnetic data as a basic diagnostic tool.
Book Synopsis Models and Phenomenology for Conventional and High-temperature Superconductivity by : Giuseppe Iadonisi
Download or read book Models and Phenomenology for Conventional and High-temperature Superconductivity written by Giuseppe Iadonisi and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for microscopic models to explain the many superconducting substances has introduced seminal concepts and techniques in many-body physics and in statistical mechanics. The complexity of the high-temperature superconductors has required a remarkable refinement of experimental techniques in order to allow a reliable characterization of the samples, and is partly the reason why so many different microscopic models have so far been proposed. This Enrico Fermi Course on Superconductivity was provided an up-to date presentation of selected experimental and theoretical theories on the (so called) conventional superconductivity and on the high temperature superconductivity. The attention was focused on those reliable measurements which are expected to provide the theory with key constraints, viz: Raman and Infrared Spectroscopy, Nuclear Spin Resonance, Angular Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy, transport measurements, Josephson effect. The lectures devoted to the overview of the BCS theory and to the discussion of minimal models and of the crossover from BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation may be particularly useful. The remaining part of the program was shared between phonon and non-phonon based mechanisms. On the one hand, special emphasis has been devoted to the breakdown of the Migdal theorem and to polaronic theories. On the other, the book contains an overview of strongly correlated electron theories, including magnetic interactions. A survey of the physics of vortices completes the theoretical part of the lectures.
