Book excerpt: On a global scale, more than 40 million people make their living working directly at sea as fishers, seafarers, in aquaculture or seabed-mining, or related occupations such as dockworkers, shipbuilding, logistics, maritime administration, secondary branches of shipping, marine tourism and other maritime professions. The study of maritime labour and occupations is still under-represented in the social sciences and humanities. With the present volume, we attempt to fill this gap by representing recent research on maritime professions from a sociological perspective drawing on a wide variety of disciplinary approaches and subject matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2022, how are women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) faring? The Manifesto about Women in STEM is a collection of 50 texts that speak to the population at large. It brings together the thoughts of several authors, including individuals (both women and men) and groups from the school, university and private sector realms, who work with women in STEM in French-speaking Canada. This Manifesto is intended to be positive and impactful, even if work still remains to be done to achieve equity and equality. Several important issues are still current, such as workfamily balance and motherhood without penalty. Issues such as intersectionality, EDI (equity, diversity and inclusion) and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women in STEM are also explored. There are texts that address the intersection of STEM and each of health, the arts, education and philosophy. Others deal with women who experience multiple forms of discrimination, for example Indigenous women and non-heterosexual women in STEM. Pioneers relate their obstacle-ridden but fulfilling journeys. Seven recommendations are proposed for a society looking to achieve equity, diversity and inclusion of women in STEM in an intersectional perspective.

After an introduction on research methodology and informant characteristics, chapter 1 begins with a sketch of the Quebec Aboriginal population and an overview of the state of employment & education among Aboriginal women. It continues with a profile of employability program clientele by such characteristics as age, origin, level of education. Chapter 2 covers program utilization & effectiveness, based on socio-demographic data gathered during interviews and from statements of informants. Views of resource persons on programs and their utilization & effectiveness are analyzed. Programs specifically tailored to Aboriginal clients are also assessed with regard to such matters as eligibility and training content. The conclusion summarizes the major thrusts of the study and ends with a series of recommendations. Appendices include tables summarizing the information on the programs discussed throughout the report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on country case studies to focus on the environmental implications of economywide policy reforms undertaken at the sectoral or macroeconomic level. Although the emphasis is upon economic policies, other noneconomic measures are also relevant, such as social, institutional, and legal actions. The main feature of most policy reforms directed at various levels of economic decisionmaking are price changes designed to promote efficiency and reduce waste. This report reinforces the view that policies that address price-related distortions can contribute to both economic and environmental goals (win-win policy reforms). A recurring theme in the case studies is that the potential for achieving parallel gains in conventional economic, social, and environmental goals is often present when economywide reforms attempt to improve macroeconomic stability, increase efficiency, and alleviate poverty. However, in important cases these potential gains cannot be realized unless complementary environmental and social measures are carried out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper highlights that Togo’s Strategy for Boosting Growth and Promoting Employment offers a medium-term development framework for implementing the Government’s General Policy Statement, the Millennium Development Goals, and the Government’s vision for making Togo an emerging economy in 15 to 20 years, as well as making it a country that respects human rights and promotes the rule of law. The return of political stability and peace to the country created a favorable environment for better governance, resumption of international assistance, and significant reduction in exterior public debt. The Government’s medium-term economic policy for 2013–2017 will essentially be used to build and consolidate the foundations for Togo’s future economic emergence. The focus will be on new priorities: boosting growth; employment and inclusion; strengthening governance; and reducing regional disparities and promoting grassroots development. Designing a national land-use plan will territorialize development by creating a more balanced national economic space. The new land-use scheme will be based on dynamic, competitive, regional economies in which the urbanization of regional capitals and secondary towns is sufficiently controlled to allow true development hubs to emerge.
