Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammographic abnormalities form the basis by which non-palable breast lesions are identified and investigated. This book highlights the discovery, identification and management of breast cancer in its pre-clinical (non-palpable) stage. The authors have extensive experience with occult mammographically-discovered breast lesions spanning several years and have correlated the radiologic and pathologic findings with clinical management and follow-up of numerous patients. Outstanding features of this book include the comparison of mammography with other imaging methods, including CT and ultrasound, and the current controversies concerning management of the patient.

Book excerpt: This text describes a system of reporting breast fine needle aspiration biopsy that uses five clearly defined categories, each described by a specific term and each with a specific risk of malignancy. The five categories are insufficient/inadequate, benign, atypical, suspicious of malignancy and malignant. Each category has a risk of malignancy and is linked to management recommendations, which include several options because it is recognized that diagnostic infrastructure, such as the availability of core needle biopsy and ultrasound guidance, vary between developed and low and middle income countries. This text includes key diagnostic cytological criteria for each of the many lesions and tumors found in the breast. The cytopathology of specific lesions is illustrated with high quality photomicrographs with clear figure descriptions. Chapters also discuss current and potential future ancillary tests, liquid based cytology, nipple cytology and management. An additional chapter provides an overview of an approach to the diagnosis of direct smears of breast fine needle aspiration biopsies. The International Academy of Cytology Yokohama System for Reporting Breast Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Cytopathology provides a clear logical approach to the diagnosis and categorization of breast lesions by FNAB cytology, and aims to facilitate communication with breast clinicians, further research into breast cytopathology and related molecular pathology, and improve patient care.

Book excerpt: Breast Imaging presents a comprehensive review of the subject matter commonly encountered by practicing radiologists and radiology residents in training. This volume includes succinct overviews of breast cancer epidemiology, screening, staging, and treatment; overviews of all imaging modalities including mammography, tomosynthesis, ultrasound, and MRI; step-by-step approaches for image-guided breast interventions; and high-yield chapters organized by specific imaging finding seen on mammography, tomosynthesis, ultrasound, and MRI. Part of the Rotations in Radiology series, this book offers a guided approach to breast imaging interpretation and techniques, highlighting the nuances necessary to arrive at the best diagnosis and management. Each chapter contains a targeted discussion of an imaging finding which reviews the anatomy and physiology, distinguishing features, imaging techniques, differential diagnosis, clinical issues, key points, and further reading. Breast Imaging is a must-read for residents and practicing radiologists seeking a foundation for the essential knowledge base in breast imaging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray mammography screening is the current mainstay for early breast cancer detection. It has been proven to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage and to reduce the number of women dying from the disease. However, it has a number of limitations. These current limitations in early breast cancer detection technology are driving a surge of new technological developments, from modifications of x-ray mammography such as computer programs that can indicate suspicious areas, to newer methods of detection such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or biochemical tests on breast fluids. To explore the merits and drawbacks of these new breast cancer detection techniques, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences convened a committee of experts. During its year of operation, the committee examined the peer-reviewed literature, consulted with other experts in the field, and held two public workshops. In addition to identifying promising new technologies for early detection, the committee explored potential barriers that might prevent the development of new detection methods and their common usage. Such barriers could include lack of funding from agencies that support research and lack of investment in the commercial sector; complicated, inconsistent, or unpredictable federal regulations; inadequate insurance reimbursement; and limited access to or unacceptability of breast cancer detection technology for women and their doctors. Based on the findings of their study, the committee prepared a report entitled Mammography and Beyond: Developing Technology for Early Detection of Breast Cancer, which was published in the spring of 2001. This is a non-technical summary of that report.

Book excerpt: Demonstrating the role of nuclear medicine as a complementary technique to mammography and other imaging modalities for the diagnosis of breast cancer, Radionuclide Imaging of the Breast provides a comprehensive overview of scintimammography-an accurate, safe, and noninvasive imaging method for the evaluation of breast lesions and malignancies. Reveals the encouraging results of multicenter clinical trials in the U.S. and Canada using 99mTc sestamibi breast imaging for the diagnosis of primary breast carcinoma! Addressing nonsurgical sampling of nonpalpable breast lesions as an effective means of providing diagnostic and prognostic information, Radionuclide Imaging of the Breast discusses increasing the diagnostic value of mammography and its widespread use examines the reliability of FDG-PET and FDG-SPECT in detecting lymph node involvement and distant metastases reviews breast cancer imaging with monoclonal antibodies, including murine and bioengineered antibodies compares the benefits and limitations of Thallium-20l to 99mTc-sestamibi breast imaging in evaluating suspected malignancy assesses the clinical impact of scintimammography as an adjunctive test to mammography to improve the dependability of diagnoses considers the possibility of replacing axillary lymph node dissection in patients with small breast cancers with the sentinel node approach clarifies the importance of surgery in the multimodality treatment of breast cancer elucidates pathologic difficulties for breast cancer diagnosis and more! Radionuclide Imaging of the Breast serves as an essential reference for nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, breast surgeons, medical and surgical oncologists, gynecologists, pathologists, internists, and primary care physicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each volume in this richly illustrated series, published in association with the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology, provides an organ-based approach to the cytological and histological diagnosis of small tissue samples. Benign, pre-malignant and malignant entities are presented in a well-organized and standardized format, with high-resolution color photomicrographs, tables, and lists of key specific morphologic criteria. Example vignettes allow the reader to assimilate the diagnostic principles in a case-based format. This volume provides comprehensive coverage of both surgical pathology and cytopathology of breast lesions. With a focus on malignant tumors, the full spectrum of inflammatory disorders, benign lesions, and hyperplasias are also covered in detail. Advantages and disadvantages of aspiration and core biopsy are discussed, as well as ancillary testing such as hormonal and molecular markers. With over 200 printed photomicrographs and a DVD-ROM offering all images in a downloadable format, this is an important resource for all anatomic pathologists.
