EXTRAIT Face à la propagation du diabète dans le monde, les cliniciens et les chercheurs se mobilisent pour identifier les mécanismes d’apparition du diabète et concevoir des solutions thérapeutiques innovantes. Il apparaît dorénavant très clairement que le diabète n’est pas la conséquence d’un seul facteur, mais a de multiples causes (génétiques, environnementales, etc.), ce qui rend sa compréhension complexe. Le diabète est une affection du métabolisme qui se caractérise par un taux élevé de sucre dans le sang (hyperglycémie). Environ 10 % des diabétiques sont touchés par un diabète de type 1, caractérisé par un défaut presque complet de sécrétion d’insuline. La quasi-totalité des autres cas de diabète sont des diabètes de type 2, dont les causes sont plus complexes – combinaison d’un défaut partiel de sécrétion d’insuline et d’un degré variable de résistance à l’insuline, qui peut être largement déterminée et amplifiée par le poids corporel et la sédentarité. À PROPOS DES AUTEURS Stéphane Dalle est directeur de recherche à l’Inserm. Il dirige l’équipe du laboratoire de physiopathologie de la cellule bêta pancréatique (Inserm-CNRS-université de Montpellier) à l’Institut de génomique fonctionnelle. Il travaille plus spécifiquement sur le rôle du pancréas dans la survenance de la maladie et ses possibilités de traitements. Il a reçu plusieurs prix : « Jeune chercheur ‒ section diabète 2002-2003 » décerné par l’Association pour la recherche sur le diabète, les insuffisances cérébrales et le cancer (Aredic), « Avenir-Inserm 2005 » et « Chercheur d’avenir 2009 » par la région Languedoc-Roussillon. Despite a late arrival, the COVID-19 virus has spread rapidly across Sub-Saharan Africa in recent weeks. Economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to decline from 2.4 percent in 2019 to -2.1 to -5.1 percent in 2020, the first recession in the region in 25 years. The coronavirus is hitting the region’s three largest economies —Nigeria, South Africa, and Angola— in a context of persistently weak growth and investment. In particular, countries that depend on oil and mining exports would be hit the hardest. The negative impact of the COVID-19 crisis on household welfare would be equally dramatic. African policymakers need to develop a two-pronged strategy of “saving lives and protecting livelihoods.†? This strategy includes relief measures and recovery measures aimed at strengthening health systems, providing income support to workers and liquidity support to viable businesses. However, financing of these policies will be challenging amid deteriorating fiscal positions and heightened public debt vulnerabilities. Therefore, African countries will require financial assistance from their development partners -including COVID-19 related multilateral assistance and a debt service stand still with creditors.

Adult C. elegans are reproductive for about the rst week of adulthood followed by approximately two weeks of post-reproductive adulthood prior to death. Life span is most commonly measured in the laboratory by maintaining the worms on the surface of a nutrie- agar medium (Nematode Growth Medium, NGM) with E. coli OP50 as the bacterial food source (REF). Alternative culture conditions have been described in liquid media; however, these are not widely used for longevity studies. Longevity of the commonly used wild type C. elegans hermaphrodite (N2) varies ? from 16 to 23 days under standard laboratory conditions (20 C, NGM agar, E. coli OP50 food source). Life span can be increased by maintaining animals at lower ambient temperatures and shortened by raising the ambient temperature. Use of a killed bacterial food source, rather than live E. coli, increases lifespan by 2–4 days, and growth of adult animals in the absence of bacteria (axenic growth or bac- rial deprivation) increases median life span to 32–38 days [3, 23, 24]. Under both standard laboratory conditions and bacterial deprivation conditions, wild-derived C. elegans hermaphrodites exhibit longevity comparable to N2 animals [25].

In The Odd One In, Alenka Zupančič considers how philosophy and psychoanalysis can help us understand the movement and the logic involved in the practice of comedy, and how comedy can help philosophy and psychoanalysis recognize some of the crucial mechanisms and vicissitudes of what is called humanity. Comedy by its nature is difficult to pin down with concepts and definitions, but as artistic form and social practice comedy is a mode of tarrying with a foreign object—of including the exception. Philosophy's relationship to comedy, Zupančič writes, is not exactly a simple story (and indeed includes some elements of comedy). It could begin with the lost book of Aristotle's Poetics, which discussed comedy and laughter (and was made famous by Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose).
