The specious attempts to lay the Gospels under obligation to Buddhist teaching have shaken the faith of not a few Christians. The need of a thorough refutation is imperative. The few works in English vindicating the independent origin of Christianity against Buddhist usurpation, - all of them by Protestant writers, - excellent as they are, dwell too largely on the comparative superiority of Christian teaching, and do not enter in sufficient detail into a critical scrutiny of the alleged proofs of Buddhist influence on Christianity.
