Book Synopsis Victorian Plymouth and Devonport Through the Magic Lantern by : Andrew Gill
Download or read book Victorian Plymouth and Devonport Through the Magic Lantern written by Andrew Gill and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-04-23 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second half of the 19th century, Devon was a popular tourist destination, made accessible to all by the expanding railway network. Detailed guide books, such as Black's Guide to Devonshire, were available to help visitors make the most of their stay. Black's was updated each year and included historical facts about local towns and villages, where to stay, what to see and excursions to places of interest. This 50 page booklet combines text relating to Plymouth from Black's Guide, published in 1883, with photographs taken from 'magic lantern' projection slides owned by the Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive. It is in three parts. The first is a fascinating history and general description of Devonshire and the second a more detailed look at Plymouth and its environs. The text for both is taken from the 1883 guide-book. The third part comprises thirty five photographs (most taken between 1880 and 1910), many of which have probably not been published before. The Black's Guide text and the photographs complement each other and enable us to step back in time and visit Great Britain's most important, Victorian, naval seaport.

Download or read book The Greenie written by Patrick A Moore and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Royal Navy vernacular, the term 'greenie' describes the officers and ratings responsible for the electrical engineering functions of the fleet. Electrical engineering has 'driven' the Royal Navy for far longer than one might imagine, from solving the problem of magnetic interference with the compass by the ironclad early in the 20th century onward. Author Commander Moore traces the development of technology from 1850 to today's integrated micro computers that control almost every aspect of navigation, intel, and strike capacity. At the same time, he describes how the Navy's structure and manpower changed to accommodate the new technologies, changes often accelerated in wartime, particularly in World War II. Without the full cooperation of naval establishments and organisations and various public and private museums and manufacturers, this work would have been impossible to produce. Written in an anecdotal, narrative style but with a complete mastery of the science itself, it will appeal not only to those interested in the history of the Royal Navy but also those many thousands, past and present, who can claim the honour of calling themselves one of the Greenies.
