In Devin Booker: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball's Rising Shooting Guards, you will learn the incredible story of one of basketball's most exciting young shooting guards, Devin Booker. As the thirteenth overall pick in the 2015 Draft, Devin Booker become a prominent piece of the Suns franchise as they continue rebuilding post the Steve Nash and Mike D'antoni era. It's no surprise the Suns extended a five-year maximum contract for Booker in the summer of 2018. After all, he has been one of their most consistent players the last few years. At the time of this writing, expectations are high for Booker looking ahead. There is still a great deal of potential to actualize at the young age of twenty-two. It'll be exciting to follow Booker's journey as he continues to grow in the years to come. Here is a preview of what is inside this book: Childhood and Early Life High School and College Career Getting Drafted, Rookie Season, Breakout Year, Rise to Stardom The Max Player, Phoenix's New Face of the Franchise Booker's Personal Life Impact on Basketball Legacy and Future An excerpt from the book: In today's NBA, there are two things about a player that will always get scouts, coaches, and general managers raving. No, we are not talking about experience and stats. We are talking about youth and potential. When those two aspects meet in one prospect, it is almost impossible for any scout or coach to pass on a player like that. Time and time again, it has been proven that young players with potential will most likely end up not only as stars, but game-changers. In 1995, the Minnesota Timberwolves did not make a mistake when they drafted an 18-year-old Kevin Garnett out of high school even though he had not played a single college game. The same could be said about Kobe Bryant, who got passed on by 12 teams in 1996. Any of those teams would have drafted him top overall had that draft been done over again. And we all know what happened in 2003 when the 18-year-old phenom LeBron James was taken top overall. There is no need to expound on the career LeBron has carved since the teenager first stepped on an NBA court. Obviously, all of those players were drafted at a very young age. But age was not the only factor as to why those teams took their chances when they drafted players that had not proven themselves in college. What was apparent was that they did not need to dominate in college because they already had enough potential to become stars in the NBA. But young and talented players do not always make a quick and easy transition to the pro leagues. While it only took until their second season in the league for Garnett, Bryant, and James to establish themselves as All-Stars, there have been some high school-to-pro players that did not become stars themselves. Nevertheless, teams will always gamble on a young player with a lot of potential because they know that, if they can hone them the right way, they can eventually pay dividends. Book excerpt: Are top scorers really the most valuable players? Are games decided in the final few minutes? Does the team with the best player usually win?Thinking Basketball challenges a number of common beliefs about the game by taking a deep dive into the patterns and history of the NBA. Explore how certain myths arose while using our own cognition as a window into the game's popular narratives. New basketball concepts are introduced, such as power plays, portability and why the best player shouldn't always shoot. Discover how the box score can be misleading, why "closers" are overrated and how the outcome of a game fundamentally alters our memory. Behavioral economics, traffic paradoxes and other metaphors highlight this thought-provoking insight into the NBA and our own thinking. A must-read for any basketball fan -- you'll never view the sport, and maybe the world, the same again.

Book excerpt: From one of basketball's foremost experts in the field of analytics, a fascinating new perspective on how to watch and think about the game. At its core, the goal of any basketball team is relatively simple: take and make good shots while preventing the opponent from doing the same. But what is a "good" shot? Are all good shots created equally? And how might one identify players who are more or less likely to make and prevent those shots in the first place? The concept of basketball "analytics," for lack of a better term, has been lauded, derided, and misunderstood. The incorporation of more data into NBA decision-making has been credited—or blamed—for everything from the death of the traditional center to the proliferation of three-point shooting to the alleged abandonment of the area of the court known as the midrange. What is beyond doubt is that understanding its methods has never been more important to watching and appreciating the NBA. In The Midrange Theory, Seth Partnow, NBA analyst for The Athletic and former Director of Basketball Research for the Milwaukee Bucks, explains how numbers have affected the modern NBA game, and how those numbers seek not to "solve" the game of basketball but instead urge us toward thinking about it in new ways. The relative value of Russell Westbrook's triple-doubles Why some players succeed in the playoffs while others don't How NBA teams think about constructing their rosters through the draft and free agency The difficulty in measuring defensive achievement The fallacy of the "quick two" From shot selection to evaluating prospects to considering aesthetics and ethics while analyzing the box scores, Partnow deftly explores where the NBA is now, how it got here, and where it might be going next.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “incredible read on some incredible days and nights in the old association” (Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN senior NBA insider) Charles Oakley—one of the toughest and most loyal players in NBA history—tells his unfiltered stories about his basketball journey and his relationships with Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, James Dolan, Donald Trump, George Floyd, and many others. If you ask a New York Knicks fan about Charles Oakley, you better prepare to hear the love and a favorite story or two. But his individual stats weren’t remarkable, and while he helped power the Knicks to ten consecutive playoffs, he never won a championship. So why does he hold such a special place in the minds, hearts, and memories of NBA players and fans? Because over the course of nineteen years in the league, Oakley was at the center of more unbelievable encounters than Forrest Gump, and nearly as many fights as Mike Tyson. He was the friend you wish you had, and the enemy you wish you’d never made. If any opposing player was crazy enough to start a fight with him, or God forbid one of his teammates, Oakley would end it. “I can’t remember every rebound I grabbed but I do have a story—the true story—of just about every punch and slap on my resume,” he says. In The Last Enforcer, Oakley shares one incredible story after the next—all in his signature “unflinchingly tough, honest, and ultimately endearing” (Harvey Araton, New York Times bestselling author) style—about his life in the paint and beyond, fighting for rebounds and respect. You’ll look back on the era of the 1990s NBA, when tough guys with rugged attitudes, unflinching loyalty, and hard-nosed work ethics were just as important as three-point sharpshooters. You’ll feel like you were on the court, in the room, can’t believe what you just saw, and need to tell everyone you know about it.

Book excerpt: Instant New York Times, USA Today, Publishers Weekly, and Wall Street Journal Bestseller! A powerful and unexpected memoir of family, faith, tragedy, and life's most important lessons. The day after future NBA superstar Chris Paul signed his letter of intent to play college basketball for Wake Forest, he received a world-shattering phone call. His grandfather, Nathaniel "Papa" Jones, a pillar of the Winston-Salem community where he owned and operated the first Black-owned service station in North Carolina, was mugged and ultimately died from a heart attack resulting from the assault. His funeral filled the largest church in the county, which held over one thousand people. He was sixty-one years old. The day after burying his grandfather, Chris was coping the best way he knew how: by playing basketball for his high school team. After pouring in shot after shot, his last attempt was an airball purposely flung out of bounds from the foul line before Chris exited the game. The next day, local news headlines declared that he fell six points shy of the statewide single game high school scoring record. But he accomplished exactly what he set out to do: scoring sixty-one points, one for each year of life lived by his grandfather. In Sixty-One, Chris opens up about life beyond basketball and the role his grandfather played in molding him into the man and father he is today. He’ll speak about the foundation of faith and family he built his life upon, what it means to be a positive light within your community and beyond, and the importance of setting the proper example for future generations. Most importantly, Chris will talk about his home, Winston-Salem, and the close-knit family and village that raised him to become one of the most respected leaders in all of sports.

Book excerpt: Steph Curry was surrounded by basketball as a kid. He practiced with his brother and his dad, who was a professional player in the NBA. He heard about basketball at the dinner table and watched all his dad's games on TV. Basketball had been a part of his life since the moment he was born, but when he wanted to play in college, coaches didn't think he was ready. Teams took one look at him and thought he was too small to be any good on the court. All Curry needed was the chance to prove them wrong.
