Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of a two-volume collection of essays provides a comprehensive examination of the idea of social control in the history of Europe. The uniqueness of these volumes lies in two main areas. First, the contributors compare methods of social control on many levels, from police to shaming, church to guilds. Second, they look at these formal and informal institutions as two-way processes. Unlike many studies of social control in the past, the scholars here examine how individuals and groups that are being controlled necessarily participate in and shape the manner in which they are regulated. Hardly passive victims of discipline and control, these folks instead claimed agency in that process, accepting and resisting -- and thus molding -- the controls under which they functioned. The essays in this volume focus on the interplay of ecclesiastical institutions and the emerging states, examining discipline from a bottom-up perspective. Book jacket.

Book Synopsis Controlling Crime, Controlling Society by : Dario Melossi
Download or read book Controlling Crime, Controlling Society written by Dario Melossi and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did anxieties about crime and deviance emerge in the modern world, first in Europe and then in America? How did they come to occupy centre-stage in the ongoing drama played out in public discourse? And how have theories of crime and deviance related to the actual practices of social control and punishment, and to the main currents of social conflict? In this illuminating new book, Dario Melossi addresses these crucial questions, and at the same time offers an engaging survey of the theories of social control, crime and deviance. From the early work of Beccaria and Lombroso, via the pioneering sociology of 1920s Chicago, to 60s radicalism and the subsequent emergence of a “culture of fear”, the book covers the full range of theoretical thinking in this area, including more recent assessments of mass imprisonment in post-9/11 America. In a sharp and lucid style, Melossi argues that two orientations have always been battling each other in society, one in which the control of crime is paramount, and the other in which controlling crime becomes secondary to the exercise of wider social control. Conceived and written by a scholar who has been active for many years both in Europe and the United States, the text will be an invaluable aid to advanced students and scholars of sociology and criminology on both sides of the Atlantic.

If so, under what conditions can it prevent crime, delinquency, suicide, alcoholism, drug abuse, or joining cults? Despite the fact that ordinary citizens assume religion deters deviant behavior, there has been little systematic scientific research on these crucial questions. This book is the first comprehensive analysis, drawing on a wide range of historical and contemporary data, and written in a style that will appeal to readers from many intellectual backgrounds.
Book Synopsis Criminalization of Activism by : Valeria Vegh Weis
Download or read book Criminalization of Activism written by Valeria Vegh Weis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-22 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminalization of Activism draws on a multiplicity of perspectives and case studies from the Global South and the Global North to show how protest has been subject to processes of criminalization over time. Contributors include scholars and activists from different disciplinary backgrounds, with a balance between authors from the Global North and the Global South. An introduction frames the topic within critical criminology, while also highlighting the possible disciplinary approaches and definitions of criminalization of resistance/activism. The editor also investigates the particularities of the current times in comparison to dynamics of criminalization in prior stages of capitalism. Bringing together a range of criminalization themes into a single volume, compromising historical criminology, Indigenous studies, gender studies, critical criminology, southern criminology and green criminology, it will be of great interest to scholars and students of criminology, social movement theory and social sciences, as well as those involved in activism and with a stand against criminalization.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974, Deviance and Social Control represents a collection of original papers first heard at the annual meeting of the British Sociological Association in 1971. They reveal how the American approach to deviance has been taken up by British sociologists, and revised and modified, and they explore possibilities of extending and strengthening the subject, for instance through comparative analysis or by examining issues which bear on deviant behaviour.

Book excerpt: In a changing European political landscape, where borders have progressively been erased and people's mobility has become a reality, crime is a fully-fledged European phenomenon, which needs to be analysed from a European and interdisciplinary perspective, within the umbrella of Socio-economic and Humanities disciplines. Crime statistics must be the starting point of evidence based policy making. Access to existing data should be improved for researchers and citizens alike and shared on information platforms suitable for substantive and comparative analysis. Comparative crime research at EU level has not achieved maturity yet. Data integration should be substantially updated to improve the evaluation of measures to meet EU and national goals of protecting freedom, justice and security. New indicators need to be developed and crime policies need to be assessed against criteria of public confidence in justice, instead of mainly crime control. The European Commission has funded several research projects in the field of Crime and Deviance, through the Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities Programme, within the 6th and 7th Framework programme for Research and Technological Development. This policy review summarises main findings of those projects, with the aim of providing a useful tool for policy makers, practitioners as well as researchers in the field of crime and deviance [résumé de l'auteur].
