Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research and development in the field of high-current circuit breaker technology are devoted to meeting two challenges: the environmental compatibility and new demands on electrical grids caused by the increasing use of renewable energies. Electric arcs in gases or a vacuum are the key component in the technology at present and will play a key role also in future concepts, e.g., for hybrid and fast switching required for high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission systems. In addition, the replacement of the environmentally harmful SF6 in gas breakers and gas-insulated switchgear is an actual issue. This Special Issue comprises eight peer-reviewed papers, which address recent studies of switching arcs and electrical insulation at high and medium voltage. Three papers consider issues of the replacement of the environmentally harmful SF6 by CO2 in high-voltage gas circuit breakers. One paper deals with fast switching in air with relevance for hybrid fault current limiters and hybrid HVDC interrupters. The other four papers illustrate actual research on vacuum current breakers as an additional option for environmentally compatible switchgear; fundamental studies of the vacuum arc ignition, as well as concepts for the use of vacuum arcs for DC interruption.

Book excerpt: Direct current (dc) power systems are gaining more attention in academia and industry due to their advantages compared with conventional alternating current (AC) power networks. DC systems present higher efficiency at the same voltage levels, they need no frequency synchronization and reactive power compensation, and they ease the integration of renewable energies. Despite the advantages of dc power systems, there are still several technical and practical challenges that slow down their widespread adoption and development worldwide. One of the primary technical challenges that must be addressed is the development of dc circuit breakers (DCCBs).Among DCCBs, dc solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs) use semiconductor devices to conduct load currents during the normal operation and hold dc bus voltages during the breaker OFF-state. Among many benefits, SSCBs present an ultrafast response speed, a modular structure, no arc problems, extended operation cycles, and a high compactness, fulfilling the urgent needs of emerging technologies such as electric ships. However, solid-state switches used in SSCBs have limited voltage/current turn-off capability and thermal capacity, requiring more investigations in the field. This thesis focuses on advanced techniques to enhance lifetime, safety, and reliability in dc SSCBs. There are four main contributions as follows. Firstly, soft turn-off dc SSCBs are introduced, where compact and fast active injection circuits (AIC) are used to eliminate the transient energy and mitigate gate voltage oscillations in solid-state switches during current interruption, extending the SSCBs lifetime. Second, active snubbers in dc SSCBs are discussed, and novel topologies are presented to extend the maximum allowable dc bus voltage on SSCBs, remove the voltage on passive components during the SSCBs OFF-state, and solve the reliability issue of varistors in SSCBs. Next, fault current bypass-based dc SSCBs are proposed, where fault currents are reduced to zero at the load side or faulty sections within microseconds regardless of the dc system's line inductance, improving safety. Finally, SSCBs are studied at the system-level, and a new protective scheme is developed to optimally coordinate dc ultrafast SSCBs in multi-source dc microgrids. In summary, dc SSCBs play a key role in newly established dc power systems. SSCBs present a fast response speed, a modular structure, and high compactness. In this thesis, advanced techniques are introduced to improve lifetime, safety, and reliability in dc SSCBs at device- and system-level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and development of two direct current (DC) solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs) for use in low voltage DC distribution systems were examined. Both SSCBs utilized the isolated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) and were developed for low current applications of under 20 A. The approach was documented to show the advancement of IGBT technology and the fundamental understanding of high-side drive topologies and their applications. A 500 V 20 A SSCB was designed to accommodate specifications provided by Portland Architects and Engineers (PAE). The design featured two optocoupler gate drives to operate four non punch through (NPT) IGBTs in parallel, and a thermal experimentation led to the calculated temperature rise at full load operation to be 9.79 °C above ambient temperature. The SSCB’s response to over current events of 120 A and 180 A was simulated to show a maximum voltage of 883 V and 1.21 kV respectively. The second SSCB developed was designed and experimentally tested to operate at 50 V with up to 10 A of continuous current using free air conditions. Experimental response and trip times for pickup (PU), total clearing time (TCT), and switching time (SWT) were found to average 43.74 μs, 47.53 μs, and 3.79 μs respectively. The average response time was found to be roughly 290 times faster than that of a conventional mechanical circuit breakers (MCBs) operation and exemplifies how the SSCB can be used to fill the gaps in conventional alternating current (AC) protection systems. The DC distribution system is capable of extreme faults that could damage sensitive power electronic equipment, and the DC distribution system and the SSCB are a continuing point of research that has the potential to drive the power industry to higher efficiencies and better utilization of clean energy systems.
