Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several state-of-the-art applications of molten salts are presented, such as metal-molten salt systems, room temperature glass formation, and room temperature melts. Several recent examples of applications highlight the importance of molten salts in various industries (batteries, pyrochemical reprocessing of nuclear fuel, synthesis and catalysis). The basic concepts of the structure, dynamics, electrochemistry, interfacial and thermodynamic properties are detailed and relevant experimental methods described. Such fundamental concepts are essential for an in-depth understanding of the physicochemical properties of molten salts in general, including metal-molten salts, glass forming and low temperature melts. Experimental methods for investigating structural, dynamical, electrochemical thermodynamical and interfacial properties are detailed, as also are techniques for data collection and analysis. Scientists, engineers and technologists will find the volume a valuable reference source covering a wide spectrum of fundamental concepts and modern technologies.

Book excerpt: What Is Molten Salt Reactor A kind of nuclear fission reactor known as a molten salt reactor, or MSR for short, is one in which the main nuclear reactor coolant and/or the fuel is a mixture of molten salt. There have only ever been two MSRs in operation, and both of them were research reactors in the United States. The Molten-Salt Reactor Experiment of the 1960s aimed to prove the concept of a nuclear power plant that implements a thorium fuel cycle in a breeder reactor, whereas the Aircraft Reactor Experiment of the 1950s was primarily motivated by the compact size that the technique offers. The Aircraft Reactor Experiment was conducted in the 1950s. Increased research into Generation IV reactor designs started to reinvigorate interest in the technology, and as of September 2021, China was on the brink of beginning its TMSR-LF1 thorium MSR. This interest was sparked by the fact that numerous countries had projects using the technology. Book excerpt: During 2010, fast-spectrum molten-salt reactors (FS-MSRs) were selected as a transformational reactor concept for light-water reactor (LWR)-derived heavy actinide disposition by the Department of Energy-Nuclear Energy Advanced Reactor Concepts (ARC) program and were the subject of a preliminary scoping investigation. Much of the reactor description information presented in this report derives from the preliminary studies performed for the ARC project. This report, however, has a somewhat broader scope-providing a conceptual overview of the characteristics and design options for FS-MSRs. It does not present in-depth evaluation of any FS-MSR particular characteristic, but instead provides an overview of all of the major reactor system technologies and characteristics, including the technology developments since the end of major molten salt reactor (MSR) development efforts in the 1970s. This report first presents a historical overview of the FS-MSR technology and describes the innovative characteristics of an FS-MSR. Next, it provides an overview of possible reactor configurations. The following design features/options and performance considerations are described including: (1) reactor salt options-both chloride and fluoride salts; (2) the impact of changing the carrier salt and actinide concentration on conversion ratio; (3) the conversion ratio; (4) an overview of the fuel salt chemical processing; (5) potential power cycles and hydrogen production options; and (6) overview of the performance characteristics of FS-MSRs, including general comparative metrics with LWRs. The conceptual-level evaluation includes resource sustainability, proliferation resistance, economics, and safety. The report concludes with a description of the work necessary to begin more detailed evaluation of FS-MSRs as a realistic reactor and fuel cycle option.

Book excerpt: This study examines design alternatives for molten-salt breeder reactors (MSBRs) with breeding ratios near 1.0 to evaluate their nonproliferation characteristics. Only those systems are examined for which sufficient information exists to describe adequately the power plant system characteristics in terms of both practicality as a source of electricity and susceptibility to diversion of special nuclear material (SNM). In this precursory study evaluating performance and nondiversion features, various candidate systems have been examined with the following results: (1) molten-salt reactors could eliminate the transport requirements of SNM to or from the reactor for long periods of time and make the extraction of SNM from the reactor inventory difficult; (2) two candidate MSR configurations, the CeF/sub 3/ processing scheme and the scheme with no chemical processing, can be highly resistant to diversion but cannot be classed as diversion-proof; (3) two additional systems, less resistant than the two above, are the reductive extraction process without Pa isolation and the salt distillation process; and, (4) the system based on the reference MSBR, requiring salt fluorination is significantly less resistant to diversion than a system without fluorination. Diversion-resistant MSBRs, if developed, might afford resistance to diversion of SNM comparable to solid-fueled reactors without fuel reprocessing and would require less uranium for deployment and operation.

Book excerpt: Operating at a high level of fuel efficiency, safety, proliferation-resistance, sustainability and cost, generation IV nuclear reactors promise enhanced features to an energy resource which is already seen as an outstanding source of reliable base load power. The performance and reliability of materials when subjected to the higher neutron doses and extremely corrosive higher temperature environments that will be found in generation IV nuclear reactors are essential areas of study, as key considerations for the successful development of generation IV reactors are suitable structural materials for both in-core and out-of-core applications. Structural Materials for Generation IV Nuclear Reactors explores the current state-of-the art in these areas. Part One reviews the materials, requirements and challenges in generation IV systems. Part Two presents the core materials with chapters on irradiation resistant austenitic steels, ODS/FM steels and refractory metals amongst others. Part Three looks at out-of-core materials. Structural Materials for Generation IV Nuclear Reactors is an essential reference text for professional scientists, engineers and postgraduate researchers involved in the development of generation IV nuclear reactors. - Introduces the higher neutron doses and extremely corrosive higher temperature environments that will be found in generation IV nuclear reactors and implications for structural materials - Contains chapters on the key core and out-of-core materials, from steels to advanced micro-laminates - Written by an expert in that particular area
