Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of how welfare and development programs in the United States and Latin America produced the instruments of their own destruction In the years after 1945, a flood of U.S. advisors swept into Latin America with dreams of building a new economic order and lifting the Third World out of poverty. These businessmen, economists, community workers, and architects went south with the gospel of the New Deal on their lips, but Latin American realities soon revealed unexpected possibilities within the New Deal itself. In Colombia, Latin Americans and U.S. advisors ended up decentralizing the state, privatizing public functions, and launching austere social welfare programs. By the 1960s, they had remade the country’s housing projects, river valleys, and universities. They had also generated new lessons for the United States itself. When the Johnson administration launched the War on Poverty, U.S. social movements, business associations, and government agencies all promised to repatriate the lessons of development, and they did so by multiplying the uses of austerity and for-profit contracting within their own welfare state. A decade later, ascendant right-wing movements seeking to dismantle the midcentury state did not need to reach for entirely new ideas: they redeployed policies already at hand. In this groundbreaking book, Amy Offner brings readers to Colombia and back, showing the entanglement of American societies and the contradictory promises of midcentury statebuilding. The untold story of how the road from the New Deal to the Great Society ran through Latin America, Sorting Out the Mixed Economy also offers a surprising new account of the origins of neoliberalism.

Book Synopsis Development Planning in India by : Kamal Nayan Kabra
Download or read book Development Planning in India written by Kamal Nayan Kabra and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1997 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical review of India's experience with development planning and its interface with the evolving mode of production and strategy of development, Development Planning in India raises a number of central methodological and institutional questions related to the planning process. Kamal Nayan Kabra dwells particularly on the chasm between planning and formulating and implementing on the one hand and the real stated objectives on the other. Discarding the general tendency to adopt a narrow, economistic approach, Kabra highlights the real-life possibilities and constraints facing a holistic, institutional approach to development planning. He avoids the pitfall of viewing market forces versus plan and centralization versus decentralization as irreconcilable opposites. Instead, the author provides practical suggestions for enriching the development process through effective plan implementation. This could result in a more meaningful multilevel framework to achieve people-centered and autocratic development with a human face. At a time when "plan wariness" seems to be setting in, Development Planning in India serves as a cogent reminder that planning remains crucial in developing countries such as India. At the same time, the content and meaning of the process need to be rethought and fresh impetus provided to overcome the constraints in order to make development planning more relevant to the needs of today. Professors, students, and practitioners in development planning and administration, policy studies, development studies, and economics will find Development Planning in India useful.

Book Synopsis Thinking About Development by : Lisa Peattie
Download or read book Thinking About Development written by Lisa Peattie and published by Springer. This book was released on 1981 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intends to be helpful to people-students and oth ers-who are beginning to think about how to change the world via that activity we call development planning. The issues of What is Progress? and How do we get it? are world-wide, although they appear in different form in societies like our own from the way they do in the Third World countries with their explicit development planning. These are two very big questions and have no easy or final answers. However, we can think about them in more rather than less effective ways. Thinking about them can be both a way of beginning to take action on issues of growth and change, and a way of understanding our own situation. vii viii I PREFACE This book argues that thinking about development plan ning has gotten into trouble by dividing economy from so ciety, and misconstruing moral-social-political issues as tech nical ones. Development planning has centered on economic planning, treating social issues as obstacles to growth, or as problems arising out of economic change. The book takes up a number of specific topics which enter into development planning-topics such as the organization of work, educa tional planning, family policy-to show how in reality the social and the economic, the moral and the technical, are one, and how thinking about policy in each area should therefore take an integrated perspective.
