Book excerpt: This study was approved by the CDOT's Research Implementation Committee as a high priority research with the goal of improving the accuracy of the existing and forecasted traffic loads of CDOT's highway network. The overall scope of this project involved examination of those resources directly related to the current statewide ESAL classification system and the generation of this final report discussing the research and analysis conducted and recommendation of procedures required for CDOT to develop and implement a more site-specific ESAL classification system. In this study Nichols Consulting Engineers (NCE) analyzed all available CDOT permanent and portable weigh-in-motion (WIM) data.

Download or read book Development of New Pavement Design Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL) written by Sirous H. Alavi and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a given road segment, accurate estimates of current and projected traffic [in terms of Equivalent Single Axle Loads (ESALs)] can result in significant cost savings, either from the standpoint of initial construction cost or future maintenance and rehabilitation cost. The primary objective of this project is to prepare a new ESAL design table for Arizona's highway network. This new table is based on analysis of current traffic data collection procedures, traffic forecasting methodology, and ESAL development procedures, including the assignment of traffic ESAL levels to the various highway segments.

Book Synopsis Extent of Top-down Cracking in Colorado by : Donna S. Harmelink
Download or read book Extent of Top-down Cracking in Colorado written by Donna S. Harmelink and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2000, a forensic evaluation was conducted on a project that was exhibiting early longitudinal cracking near the wheel paths. A team of national asphalt experts conducted this forensic evaluation. The forensic team concluded that the cracking on the project was surface initiated cracking and was caused by a number of contributing factors. One of the contributing factors to the early distress that was identified by the experts were the pockets of segregation that were observed at the bottom of the surface lift but were not apparent on the surface. The object of this study was to determine the extent of "top-down cracking" in Colorado, what causes it, how can it be prevented, if it occurs how is the distress treated, and how quickly does the distress need to be treated.

Book Synopsis Sampling Location Impact on Measured Asphalt Content of Hot Mix Asphalt by : Mohammad Abu-Hassan
Download or read book Sampling Location Impact on Measured Asphalt Content of Hot Mix Asphalt written by Mohammad Abu-Hassan and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2000, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) requested a forensic study of a project located on I-24 north of Denver. The request was made because, within a year of the 1997 overlay, longitudinal cracking appeared in the surface. Transverse cracks were attributed to reflective cracking. However, the longitudinal cracks appeared to be surface initiated. In October 2000, a forensic team reviewed the project and established a sampling and testing plan to take cores from the roadway. Based on data analysis of the cores, the higher than expected in-place air voids, the low effective asphalt, and segregation within the mat, all contributed to the early cracking.

Book Synopsis Performance Evaluation of Various Corrosion Protection Systems of Bridges in Colorado by : Yunping Xi
Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Various Corrosion Protection Systems of Bridges in Colorado written by Yunping Xi and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures has been a significant problem for many state and transportation agencies since the application of deicing salts was introduced. Much research has been conducted to develop corrosion protection systems that can prolong the life span of reinforced concrete structures. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has several routine and experimental measures to prevent corrosion of the rebar including epoxy-coated rebar, calcium nitrite admixture, organic corrosion inhibitors, a thick cover of quality concrete, and a waterproofing membrane covered by an asphalt overlay. An extensive literature review was performed to collect information on various corrosion protection systems that have been used in the U.S. and around the world. Current CDOT practices in terms of corrosion protection measures were reviewed. A draft inspection plan for Colorado's bridge structures was proposed.

Book Synopsis Development and Implementation of Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Pavement Management System (PMS) by : Sameh Zaghloul
Download or read book Development and Implementation of Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Pavement Management System (PMS) written by Sameh Zaghloul and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has been one of the pioneering states in the development and implementation of Pavement Management System (PMS). Since the early 1980's, ADOT has been using pavement management tools to manage, maintain and preserve Arizona's highway network. ADOT's PMS tools were originally based on a probabilistic approach for modeling the pavement performance, which were adequate for the original ADOT requirements. Recently, ADOT has decided to expand the use of the PMS tools to also support the pavement maintenance operations. This required a change in the existing ADOT's PMS tools, which prompted a need to move to a different pavement management software. Subsequently, ADOT selected Stantec's Highway Pavement Management Application (HPMA) software to replace its pavement management system, and retained Stantec's services for structuring, data loading, model development, and implementing the HPMA. HPMA is a single software application that provides full database management and analysis capabilities required by the two types of users (PMS and Maintenance). The HPMA provides capability for users to work at both the detailed highway level and the aggregated section level. Also it provides a wide variety of analysis capabilities, including corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance, and rehabilitation analysis. This report documents the approach used to achieve the goals of this project including the customization of the HPMA to address ADOT requirements, the development of the analysis models, which are based on ADOT historic performance data, and the implementation of these analysis models in conducting a statewide analysis.
