Book Synopsis Development of Singularities in Nonlinear Viscoelasticity by : J. A. Nohel
Download or read book Development of Singularities in Nonlinear Viscoelasticity written by J. A. Nohel and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the motion of nonlinear viscoelastic materials with fading memory in one space dimension. It concentrates on viscoelastic solids and briefly remark on similar results for fluids. After formulating the mathematical problems, the authors survey results for global existence of classical solutions to the initial value problem, provided the initial data are sufficiently small. They then discuss in some detail the development of singularities in initially smooth solutions for large data. Keywords: nonlinear hyperbolic problems; Volterra integrodifferential equations; dissipation; decay; shocks; viscoelastic fluids.

Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications AMORPHOUS POLYMERS AND NON-NEWTONIAN FLUIDS is in part the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1984-85 IMA program on CONTINUUM PHYSICS AND PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS We are grateful to the Scientific Committee: Haim Brezis Constantine Dafermos Jerry Ericksen David Kinderlehrer for planning and implementing an exciting and stimulating year-long program. We espe cially thank the Program Organizers, Jerry Ericksen, David Kinderlehrer, Stephen Prager and Matthew Tirrell for organizing a workshop which brought together scientists and mathematicians in a variety of areas for a fruitful exchange of ideas. George R. Sell Hans Weinberger Preface Experiences with amorphous polymers have supplied much of the motivation for developing novel kinds of molecular theory, to try to deal with the more significant features of systems involving very large molecules with many degrees offreedom. Similarly, the observations of many unusual macroscopic phenomena has stimulated efforts to develop linear and nonlinear theories of viscoelasticity to describe them. In either event, we are confronted not with a well-established, specific set of equations, but with a variety of equations, conforming to a loose pattern and suggested by general kinds of reasoning. One challenge is to devise techniques for finding equations capable of delivering definite and reliable predictions. Related to this is the issue of discovering ways to better grasp the nature of solutions ofthose equations showing some promise.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Viscoelastic Materials with Fading Memory by : John A. Nohel
Download or read book Nonlinear Viscoelastic Materials with Fading Memory written by John A. Nohel and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equations governing the motion of viscoelastic materials with fading memory incorporate a nonlinear elastic-type response with a natural dissipative mechanical. Our purpose is to discuss the subtle effects of this mechanism in viscoelastic materials of Boltzmann type. Recent results on the global existence and decay of classical solutions for smooth and small data (in one space dimension) are reviewed for smooth and singular memory kernels; for smooth kernels a number of such results can be generalized to several space dimensions. A recent result on the development of singularities in finite time for large data is discussed; several open problems are formulated. A program for studying weak solutions for such systems, including the development of numerical algorithms, is outlined. Keywords: hyperbolic equations; Volterra equations.
Book Synopsis Finite Elasticity And Viscoelasticity: A Course In The Nonlinear Mechanics Of Solids by : Aleksey Drozdov
Download or read book Finite Elasticity And Viscoelasticity: A Course In The Nonlinear Mechanics Of Solids written by Aleksey Drozdov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-01-11 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic and self-consistent introduction to the nonlinear continuum mechanics of solids, from the main axioms to comprehensive aspects of the theory. The objective is to expose the most intriguing aspects of elasticity and viscoelasticity with finite strains in such a way as to ensure mathematical correctness, on the one hand, and to demonstrate a wide spectrum of physical phenomena typical only of nonlinear mechanics, on the other.A novel aspect of the book is that it contains a number of examples illustrating surprising behaviour in materials with finite strains, as well as comparisons between theoretical predictions and experimental data for rubber-like polymers and elastomers. The book aims to fill a gap between mathematicians specializing in nonlinear continuum mechanics, and physicists and engineers who apply the methods of solid mechanics to a wide range of problems in civil and mechanical engineering, materials science, and polymer physics. The book has been developed from a graduate course in applied mathematics which the author has given for a number of years.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Models and Methods for Real World Systems by : K.M. Furati
Download or read book Mathematical Models and Methods for Real World Systems written by K.M. Furati and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-07-19 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume centers on the links between mathematics and the physical world. It first explores future challenges of mathematical technology, offers a wide-ranging definition of industrial mathematics, and explains the mathematics of type-II superconductors. After lucid discussions on theoretical and applied aspects of wavelets, the book presents classical and fractal methods for physical problems, including a fractal approach to porous media textures and using MATLAB to model chaos in the motion of a satellite. The final section surveys recent trends in variational methods, focusing on areas such as elliptic inverse problems, sweeping processes, and the BBKY hierarchy of quantum kinetic equations.
