Book excerpt: Chemistry and Technology of Emulsion Polymerisation 2e provides a practical and intuitive explanation of emulsion polymerization, in combination with both conventional and controlled radical polymerization. For those working in industry, coupling theory with everyday practice can be difficult. By carefully explaining the principles of the reaction, based on well-designed experimental investigation, the book explains how the principles relate to practical application. The second edition of this book includes a new chapter on morphology of latex particles, a rapidly progressing area where modelling the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of phase separation and morphology has developed into a mature and powerful tool to predict and control morphology of latex particles. Another area that is rapidly progressing is the application of controlled radical polymerisation in emulsion polymerization. Controlled radical polymerisation is used in aiding encapsulation of inorganic particles like pigment particles and clay platelets. These latest developments are included in the second edition.

Book excerpt: We study dynamic optimization of a lab-scale semi-batch emulsion copolymerization reactor for styrene and butyl acrylate in the presence of n-dodecyl mercaptan as chain transfer agent (CTA). The previously developed mathematical model of the polymerization reactions is used to predict the glass transition temperature of produced polymer, the global monomer conversion, the number and weight average molecular weights, the particle size distribution, and the amount of residual monomers. This model is implemented within gPROMS environment for modeling and optimization. It is desired to compute optimal profiles of feed rate of pre-emulsioned monomers and CTA which optimize properties (quantitative as well as qualitative) of polymers produced during the reaction subject to operational conditions and constraints.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, modeling, simulation, dynamic optimization and nonlinear control of an industrial emulsion polymerization process to produce poly-vinyl acetate (PVAc) are proposed. The reaction is modeled as a two-phase system composed of an aqueous phase and a particle phase. A detailed model is used to calculate the weight average molecular weight, the number average molecular weight and the dispersity. The moments of the growing and dead chains are used to represent the state of the polymer and to calculate the molecular weight distribution (MWD). The case study corresponds to an industrial reactor operated at a chemical company in Bogotá. An industrial scale reactor (11 m3 of capacity) is simulated where a semi-batch emulsion polymerization reaction of vinyl acetate is performed. Dynamic optimization problem is solved directly using a Nonlinear Programming solver. Integration of differential equations is made using Runge-Kutta method. Three different optimization problems are solved from the more simplistic (only one control variable: reactor temperature) to the more complex (three control variables : reactor temperature, initiator flow rate and monomer flow rate) in order to minimize the reaction time. A reduction of 25% of the batch time is achieved with respect to the normal operating conditions applied at the company. The results show that is possible to minimize the reaction time while some polymer desired qualities (conversion, molecular weight and solids content) satisfy the defined constraints. A nonlinear geometric control technique by using input/output linearization is adapted to the reactor temperature control. An extended Kalman filter (EKF) is implemented to estimate unmeasured states and it is tested in different cases including a robustness study where model errors are introduced to verify its good performance. After verification of controller performance, some process changes were proposed in order to improve process productivity and polymer quality. Finally, the optimal temperature profile and optimal feed policies of the monomer and initiator, obtained in a dynamic optimization step, are used to provide the optimal set points for the nonlinear control. The results show that the nonlinear controller designed here is appropriate to follow the optimal temperature trajectories calculated previously.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Reactor Development is written primarily for chemists and chemical engineers who are concerned with the development of a chemical synthesis from the laboratory bench scale, where the first successful experiments are performed, to the design desk, where the first commercial reactor is conceived. It is also written for those chemists and chemical engineers who are concerned with the further development of a chemical process with the objective of enhancing the performance of an existing industrial plant, as well as for students of chemistry and chemical engineering. In Part I, the `how' and the `why' of chemical reaction engineering are explained, particularly for those who are not familiar with this area. Part II deals with the effects of a number of physical phenomena on the outcome of chemical reactions, such as micro and meso-mixing and residence time distribution, mass transfer between two phases, and the formation of another phase, such as in precipitations. These scale-dependent effects are not only important in view of the conversion of chemical reactions, but also with regard to the selectivity, and in the case of solid products, to their morphology. In Part III, some applications are treated in a general way, including organic syntheses, the conversion and formation of inorganic solids, catalytic processes and polymerizations. The last chapter gives a review of the importance of the selectivity for product quality and for the purity of waste streams. For research chemists and chemical engineers whose work involves chemical reaction engineering. The book is also suitable as a supplementary graduate text.

Book excerpt: It is particularly appropriate that this symposium on the emulsion polymeriza tion of vinyl acetate was held in recognition of the industrial importance of poly(vinyl acetate) and vinyl acetate copolymers, and their rather unique properties among emulsion polymers in general. Poly( vinyl acetate) latexes were the first synthetic polymer latexes to be made on a commercial scale: their production using polyvinyl alcohol as emulsifier began in Germany during the mid-1930s and has continued to the present day, growing steadily with the years. Indeed, poly(vinyl acetate) latexes prepared with polyvinyl alcohol are still one of the mainstays of the adhesives industry. With the passing of time, however, vinyl acetate copolymers have been developed: copolymers with maleate esters such as dibutyl maleate, acrylate esters such as ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate, versatic acid esters, and, more recently, ethylene. These versatile copolymers have found increasing use in more sophisticated adhesives with specialized properties, adhesives for clay coatings on paper, carpet backing, and interior and exterior paints. Thus more than 45 years after the first commercial production of vinyl acetate latexes, their use is still growing, both in actual quantities and different applications. The industrial importance of vinyl acetate latexes makes the mechanism and kinetics of their emulsion polymerization of practical as well as scientific interest.
