Contributors explore how the steroid receptor complex modulates transcription of RNA and cover topics ranging from the sequential acquisition of responsiveness to estrogen in the rat uterus to the ontogeny of steroid receptors in the guinea pig. This book is comprised of 29 chapters and begins with a review of estrogen and estrogen effects in rat uterus and pituitary in culture. The embryonic chick Müllerian duct and several fetal guinea pig organs are then considered, followed by discussions on mammalian and chick liver, multi-hormonal control in rat liver; progesterone and decidualization; and rat mammary gland in culture. Glucocorticoids in developing pancreas, lung, and liver are examined, along with ecdysteroids in both locusts and Drosophila. Refractoriness is exemplified by gonadotropin action in the ovary. The remaining chapters deal with the role of steroid hormone receptors in brain development; the neural trigger for ovulation; aromatization and development of responsiveness of the brain to gonadal steroids; and neuroendocrine correlates of female-offspring interaction in maternal rats. This monograph will be of value to physiologists, biologists, and biochemists.

In this volume, which sum marizes our fourth meeting, these advances are very evident. What seemed like science fiction ten years ago has become commonplace science. Who would have imagined that we could synthesize a nucleotide sequence that binds a specific steroid receptor and acts as a controlling element for gene expression? No one; but as is evident from the results reported in several chapters, this technique is yielding a wealth of information. Using these and other techniques it has become apparent that gene transcription is controlled by interactions between transacting factors and DNA recognition sequences (response elements). These transacting factors appear to be members of a large gene family that includes steroid hormone receptors, transcription factors, protooncogenes and homeobox proteins. Thus a great deal has been learned, but as usual, questions remain. Many of these questions are posed by the findings and observations found in several chapters in this volume. Non hormone binding forms of steroid receptors and their relevance to receptor down regulation, recycling and biological response remain a mystery. The quantitative relationship between receptor binding and biological response still presents agonizing problems. Studies of the cerebellum are now a central focus in neuroscience. During the last four decades, many laboratories worldwide have dedicated their research activities to understanding the roles of the cerebellum in motor control, cognitive processes and biology of mental processes, behavioral symptoms, and emotion. It is now accepted that the cerebellum acts as a cognitive operator in learning, perception, and attention. Moreover, major improvements in our assessment of in vivo cerebellar architecture using imaging techniques have occurred. A typical example is the accurate description of cerebellar anatomy during fetal development with MRI, a progress which has direct impacts on patient care. These advances have been associated with discoveries of new clinical disorders, in particular in the field of genetic ataxias. More than 20 new genes have been identified these last 10 years. Only for dominant ataxias, more than 30 diseases have now been unravelled. The number of ataxic disorders will increase with aging, the cerebellum being the structure of the brain with the most important loss of neurons with age. More than 300 different cerebellar disorders are encountered during daily practice, but we are missing a single source of information explaining their pathogenesis. Despite the immense amount of knowledge acquired about the cerebellar circuitry these last years, a large book covering the neuroscience of the cerebellum is missing. The goal of this endeavour is to bring up to date information relevant for basic science and also for clinical activities. To reach this goal, the most renowned authors are gathered in a unique and in-depth book with a format of a handbook. The scientific sessions started with a talk on the History of Vitamin B6 given by David Metzler who at the very last minute presented Esmond Snell's paper adding some personal remarks. Unfortunately, both Esmond Snell and Alton Meister had to unexpectedly cancel the trip to Capri. These proceedings contain the papers presented as oral contributions and a few selected poster presentations. The limited number of pages meant we could not publish many interesting poster presentations, including those selected for the three lively and exciting evening poster discussion sessions called by the organizers "Vino, taralli and ... discussion".

Clinical syndromes of steroid hormone resistance to androgens (complete and partial testicular feminization), aldosterone (pseudo hypoaldosteronism) and vitamin D (vitamin D-dependent rickets type II) have been known for many years. Progesterone and glucocorticoid resistance syndromes have been described only recently. Resistance to estrogens has not been reported in man or in animals. It is hoped that a detailed reexamination of what is known about each of these conditions at the clinical and molecular levels will enhance our understanding of the function of these hormones and their mechanisms of action. Book excerpt: The field of steroid hormone action has continued to expand into the realm of molecular biology at a pace even faster than most of us ever imagined. techniques of molecular biology have made it possible to clone The hormone-regulated genes and to examine steroid-receptor interactions with these genes. Nucleotide sequences of these genes, which show preferential binding of steroid receptors, have been identified. These results are complemented by the identification of chromatin acceptor proteins, which also show preferential binding for steroid-receptor complexes. Thus, one can envision the day when cloned genes, purified acceptor proteins, and receptor-steroid complexes will be recombined in vitro to form a functional unit. Cellular localization of steroid receptors has undergone recent revision, and it now appears that receptors are localized primarily in the nuclear compartment. These findings, although controversial, will lead to a reassessment of many of the previous concepts of steroid-receptor interactions and regulation. The way in which these observations at the of physiology, molecular and cellular levels fit into the overall scheme development, and evolution are continuing to progress, and the future promises some very exciting syntheses of understanding at all levels of biological organization. The third Meadow Brook Conference on hormones was held in order to bring together investigators who will undoubtedly contribute heavily to this future synthesis and to permit a free exchange of ideas and concepts as they relate to the current state-of-the-art in molecular endocrinology.
