Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this investigation is to reduce the optical fiber radiation sensitivity by doping with multivalent elements. Optical fibers, doped with arsenic under different redox conditions were prepared. Arsenic additions under slightly reducing conditions lowered the fiber radiation sensitivity, without influencing the intrinsic optical loss. This observation proved that arsenic can be used to improve optical fiber radiation hardening if optimized processing conditions are used. Further, development effort is needed to determine the effect of different parameters on radiation response. The parameters include, dopants and dopant levels, redox and fiber drawing conditions. Keywords include: Radiation hardness, Arsenic doping, Optical fiber, Optical waveguides, Cerium doping, Radiation damages, Redox condition, and Glass.

They are silica fiber of graded-index Ge-P doped fiber (A fiber) known as usual communication fiber, step-index borosilicate cladded pure silica core fiber known as better radiation hard fiber (B fiber) and graded-index borosilicate fiber (C fiber). Now, graded-index borosilicate fiber is chosen for influence of boron dopant to radiation characteristics. These fibers were exposed to X-ray radiation, 1 gamma-ray radiation and neutron flux radiation. (Author).

Book excerpt: Two independent studies were conducted under this contract: (1) Radiation hardening of compressively strengthened optical fibers; (2) Development of new fluoride glasses. In the first study two preform fabrication processes based on phase separable, leachable alkali borosilicate glasses were evaluated for producing radiation hardened fibers. The first process, known as partial leaching, was found to yield low numerical aperture fibers with moderately high attenuation. Ultra-clean glass melting facilities and extensive composition studies would be required to correct these faults. This was beyond the resources of the contract. The second process, known as molecular stuffing, was used to produce alkali-modified high silica glasses doped with cerium oxide as a radiation hardening agent. Radiation damage kinetic tests were run on these glasses by irradiating the samples with 4-40 ns pulses of 15 MeV electrons and observing the absorption spectra for the time range 0.0000001 sec to 0.1 sec following the electron pulses. The results of these tests show that cerium is not effective, within the time range studies, in suppressing the radiation induced absorption for the high silica glasses tested. In the second study, under this contract, glasses in the HfF4-BaF2-LaF3 family were studied. The effects on glass forming of additions including PbF2, CsF, GdF3 and AlF3 glass was studied.

Book excerpt: In the last few years the subject of optical cornmunications has moved rapidly from being a promising research area to a practical reality already being installed and carrying traffic in trunk networks in many countries. At the same time new applications for fibre technology are emerging and are placing new demands on the system components. In telecommunications there is a steady increase of interest in the use of fibres for undersea cables, in local area networks and wideband links, and a little further ahead the possibility of coherent communications systems. With an optical carrier bandwidth of 200 THz, today's maximum bit rates of the order of Gb s-l do not approach the limits of the medium, and questions about the ultimate limits of optical communications are already being asked. On a different front, the rapid advance of fibre sensors, previously drawing heavily on the communications technology, is becoming a major driving force in the development of fibres and other components. This picture of dramatic growth in optical technology gives rise to other phenomena. A profusion of small companies mushrooms to meet the demands of specific market areas, each such company formed around a nucleus of experienced personnel from the established research groups. Multi- nationals jostle for position in the optoelectronics marketplace and price wars develop as fibre costs fall. University groups expand with government and industrial funding in attempts to maintain long-term research options and produce trained personnei.
