Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plug Flow Reactor are wildly use in chemical industries. The advantages of PFR reactor is Plug flow reactors have a high volumetric unit conversion and run for long periods of time without maintenance. The control of Plug Flow Reactor process a problem frequently encountered in the chemical industries. Controlling Plug Flow Reactor in chemical industries is very challenging because of the time varying and nonlinear characteristics of the Plug Flow Reactor processes. Nonlinear model of Plug flow reactor (PFR) process model is used to estimate the key unit operation variables when using a continuous tubular reactor to reach a specified output. In this paper gives an overview in selecting the best model in developing a nonlinear model for plug flow reactor. The steps in developing nonlinear model for plug flow reactor are developing of mathematical model in first principal including simulate under steady state and unsteady state condition, validation the mathematical model through an experimental. This model used reaction of ethyl acetate and sodium hydroxide to perform saponification for simulating the behavior of a simple Plug Flow Reactor process in a time. The mathematical model based on first principles is developed then, the model equation is solving in MATLAB environment by doing algorithm for this process. The program for Plug Flow Reactor system is created and this program known as nonlinear fundamental model. Two models were developed in this step in for comparison. The result from the MATLAB simulation program is compared with experimental results which have been selected from two difference method to validate the fundamental model. The result showed that the different between the model and experiment result is around 1-37%. As conclusion, the suitable nonlinear model for PFR system has been developed and analyses have been carried out to check the compatibility of the model.

Book excerpt: Continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) finds wide application in the chemical industry from pilot plant to full-scale production operation. CSTRs generally present operational problems due to complex open-loop nonlinear behavior in the form of input/output multiplicities and ignition/extinction phenomena. A major limitation of linear model is that plant behavior is described by linear dynamic model. As a result, linear model is inadequate for highly nonlinear process and moderately nonlinear process which have large operating regimes. This shortcoming coupled with increasingly stringent demands on throughput and product quality has spurred the development of nonlinear model .The objective of this research are development mathematical model for CSTR process based on first principal, validation of mathematical model through experimentation and nonlinear model identification of a CSTR process. The mathematical model based on first principles is developed from sodium hydroxide, ethyl acetate, and sodium acetate and ethanol mass balance. Then, the model equation is solving in MATLAB environment by doing algorithm for this process. The program for CSTR system is created and this program known as nonlinear fundamental model. The result from the MATLAB simulation program is compared with experimental result to validate the fundamental model. As a conclusion, the suitable nonlinear model for CSTR system has been developed and analysis shown the compatibility of the model with experimental result.

Book excerpt: In this work, we focus on the development and application of two Lyapunov-based model predictive control (LMPC) schemes to a large-scale nonlinear chemical process network used in the production of vinyl acetate. The nonlinear dynamic model of the process consists of 179 state variables and 13 control (manipulated) inputs and features a cooled plug-flow reactor, an eight-stage gas-liquid absorber, and both gas and liquid recycle streams. The two control schemes considered are an LMPC scheme which is formulated with a convectional quadratic cost function and a Lyapunov-based economic model predictive control (LEMPC) scheme which is formulated with an economic (non-quadratic) cost measure. The economic cost measure for the entire process network accounts for the reaction selectivity and the product separation quality. In the LMPC and LEMPC control schemes, five inputs, directly affecting the economic cost, are regulated with LMPC/LEMPC and the remaining eight inputs are computed by proportional-integral controllers. Simulations are carried out to study the economic performance of the closed-loop system under LMPC and under LEMPC formulated with the proposed economic measure. A thorough comparison of the two control schemes is provided.

Book excerpt: The sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is perhaps the most promising and viable of the proposed activated sludge modifications today for the removal of organic carbon and nutrients. In a relatively short period, it has become increasingly popular for the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters, as an effective biological treatment system due to its simplicity and flexibility of operation. Mechanism and Design of Sequencing Batch Reactors for Nutrient Removal has been prepared with the main objective to provide a unified design approach for SBR systems, primarily based on relevant process stoichiometry. Specific emphasis has been placed upon the fact that such a unified design approach is also by nature the determining factor for the selection of the most appropriate cyclic operation scheme, the sequence of necessary phases and filling patterns for the particular application. The proposed basis for design is developed and presented in a stepwise approach to cover both organic carbon and nutrient removal, domestic and industrial wastewaters, strong and specific wastes. The merits of model simulation as an integral complement of process design, along with performance evaluation of SBR models are also emphasized. Scientific and Technical Report No. 19
