Book excerpt: As part of a grant-funded project, the authors have designed an alternative certification program, E = mc[superscript 2], funded by U.S. Department of Education under its Transition to Teaching Program. Before beginning their student teaching, participants conduct observations, interviews, tutoring, small group instruction, and isolated whole group instruction. During student teaching, participants are enrolled in a second methods course to address the hypothesis of Utley, Moseley, and Bruamt (2005) that a lack of change of efficacy during student teaching is due to a lack of support. To study the effect of E = mc[superscript 2] program on the development of self-efficacy among cohorts of content-strong preservice teachers, the authors borrowed constructs from two instruments measuring teacher self-efficacy in science and mathematics and two constructs from another instrument that measures instructors' teaching efficacy and self-confidence in knowledge of content. This brief explores the relationship between those four constructs: outcome expectancy (OE), or the degree to which a teacher believes students can learn from his or her teaching; personal teaching efficacy (PTE), or the degree to which a teacher believes he or she can teach effectively; knowledge efficacy (KE), or teachers' confidence in their knowledge of content; and teaching efficacy (TE) across the program. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT This action research (AR) case study addressed the barriers teachers face when implementing project-based learning (PBL) in math and science middle grades classes. The AR team identified barriers and developed solutions to overcoming challenges when teachers plan and implement PBL. The AR team developed and coordinated a professional development program consisting of an initial PBL workshop, professional learning community (PLC) sessions, and observations and feedback. To evaluate the AR process, the following questions guided this study: What are perceived barriers to PBL implementation and how might those barriers be removed to ensure implementation of PBL with greater fidelity? How might professional development be used to increase teachers' levels of PBL implementation and efficacy in the classroom? What is learned by an action research team as it collaboratively works to develop a PBL professional development program? Under the guidance of action research, the team examined feedback from the Buck Institute Project-based Learning Survey, the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale, focus group interview transcriptions, PLC meeting notes, and observation feedback to determine if the interventions removed barriers and improved teacher efficacy. Findings included the following: (1) Teachers experienced seven common barriers that inhibited their PBL development and implementation, (2) seven solutions were developed to mitigate the barriers, (3) a comprehensive professional development program consisting of an initial workshop, a series of PLC sessions, and observations and non-evaluative feedback significantly enhanced teachers' PBL implementation and efficacy, and (4) teacher mindset is integral in adopting PBL instructional practices.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlation study was to investigate the relationship between teacher background training and teaching efficacy for instructing mathematics in the middle grades during the transition to Common Core State Standards. Participants included 37 mathematics teachers in grades six, seven, and eight in the CORE East TN region. Surveys containing the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument (MTEBI) were electronically administered to determine the dependent variables: self-efficacy (personal teaching efficacy) and outcome expectancy for teaching mathematics. Additional questions measured the independent variable, teacher background training, defined by number of college mathematics course hours taken, number TNCore mathematics training days attended, and years of experience teaching mathematics. Spearman's rho correlations were calculated using SPSS to determine the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. A significant, positive relationship was found for the number of college mathematics course hours taken and self- efficacy, but not for outcome expectancy. A significant, positive relationship was also found for self-efficacy and outcome expectancy. No significant correlations were indicated for TNCore mathematics training days attended or years' experience teaching mathematics on self-efficacy or outcome expectancy. Discussion of results, implications, and recommendations for future research are also included.

Book excerpt: Little research exists in the attitudes and efficacy of middle school math teachers and science teachers toward Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education. STEM education refers to an integrated approach to teaching math and science that incorporates problem solving, problem-based learning, and discovery rather than teaching these disciplines in isolation. Teachers’ efficacy and beliefs, outcome expectancy beliefs, and the use of STEM instructional strategies may vary by discipline. Each of these aspects are important in designing professional learning to meet the teachers’ needs as well as their capacity to implement integrated, problem-based learning into the classroom. Research suggests teacher efficacy and attitude has an impact on the implementation of innovative instructional practice such as those used in STEM education and on student achievement. This quantitative research study follows a causal comparative design to compare mean scores on the Teacher Efficacy and Attitude toward STEM (T-STEM) Survey among two groups of middle school teachers. The two groups are math teachers and science teachers from middle schools that are in the First District Regional Education Association in Georgia. The total sample size was 136 participants. A Mann-Whitney U test was conducted as an analysis to determine if there is a difference between the efficacy and beliefs toward STEM of middle school math teachers and science teachers. The data collected did not reflect any statistically significant differences between the personal teaching efficacy and beliefs, teacher outcome expectancy beliefs, and use of STEM instructional practices between middle school math and science teachers.
