Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of technology transfer for the competitive advantage of companies and the economic success of nations cannot be overstated. Technology is a determining element for firms and nations to increase productivity, to compete, and to prosper. In The Competitive Advantage of Regions and Nations, the authors stress that companies, investment promotion agencies, and government bodies cannot simply sit and wait until new technologies arrive in their domain. Rather, they need to manage the identification, assessment, attraction, absorption and application of new technologies. In this comprehensive book, Boris Ricken and George Malcotsis explain how technology transfer in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) projects can be systematically managed. Using some 40 case studies as illustration, they give step-by-step guidance for managers. The explanation of theory in this book, together with the frameworks and cases delivering solutions to the various challenges of technology transfer will be highly appreciated by managers of companies, investment promotion agencies, and government bodies alike. It also offers students confronted with the topic an understandable study guide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the unfinished India–Pakistan Trade normalisation agenda (building upon the themes covered in the book “India-Pakistan Trade: Strengthening Economic Relations” published by Springer in 2014) and discusses the steps that must be undertaken in order to move the bilateral engagement forward. Given the commencement of bilateral state-level talks and the Indian government’s emphasis on South Asian integration, it adds impetus to the trade liberalisation process, while also providing essential recommendations for policymakers in both countries. The unfinished agenda faces obstacles such as the list of items for which export from India to Pakistan continues to be restricted; lack of land borders and seamless cross-border transport services, which hampers the realisation of trade potential; negative reporting in the media, which influences traders’ perceptions; and the continued occurrence of informal trade resulting from inadequacies of formal trade relations. The book examines various sectors, including the agricultural, textiles, automotive and pharmaceutical industries, given their predominance on the list of restricted items for bilateral trade. It also covers studies on unconventional and under-researched themes concerning informal trade, informational barriers to India–Pakistan trade, and opening new land borders for trade – all of which can play a facilitating role in realizing the untapped trade potential between India and Pakistan. The book also includes the second round of the India–Pakistan trade perception survey, which identifies impediments to India–Pakistan bilateral trade and assesses the change in traders’ perceptions since the first round of the survey, which was published in 2014.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the industrial policies of Southeast Asian economies in their motor vehicle industries from early import substitution to policy-making under the more liberalised WTO policy regime. The book examines how inward automotive investment, especially from Japan, has been affected by policies, and how such investment has promoted industrial development in the late-industrialising economies within ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). It provides insights into the automotive industry of Southeast Asia in terms of production volumes, sales volumes, market structure, and trade. Through country case studies, the book is a useful reference and illustrates how industrial policies in Southeast Asia have affected the spread of automotive development in the region. It will appeal to policy-makers and researchers interested in the automobile industry, industrial policies in the industry and the spread of development from foreign investors to local firms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's economy has long been typified by neo-liberal governance, foreign investment dependence, exports dominated by grains, resources and energy, and an industrial structure in which foreign multinational enterprises play the leading role. These factors have not always contributed to stable growth and a strong manufacturing sector. Further, they have not always led to the best outcomes for Australia in its integration into the regional and global patterns. These themes form the focus of this book, which presents an analysis of Australia's economic orthodoxy and its effects. (Series: Global Cultural and Economic Research - Vol. 10)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IFC Discussion Paper 21. Much research has been conducted on the automotive industry in industrial nations, which formerly accounted for nearly all auto production worldwide. Little attention has been given to growth of the industry in the emerging markets of Central and Eastern Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America. In 1993 these economies accounted for approximately 19 percent of global vehicle output, with vehicle sales growing by at least 30 percent annually. This paper focuses on the automotive industry in developing countries and reviews the main points of the roundtable discussions organized by the IFC in Brazil, Hungary, India, and Indonesia. The discussions cover business aspects of the industry, as well as related government policies. The study also makes far-reaching suggestions. For example, component manufacturing can thrive and help generate foreign exchange, whereas car assembly may not succeed. The authors identify the major changes that have occurred since the roundtable discussions and identify the implications for developing countries. This volume is useful for private entrepreneurs considering automotive investments and for policymakers working with unresolved policy agendas.

Book excerpt: The term 'adjustment' relates to the use of policy instruments to effect structural changes in the economic environment, in order to help facilitate growth promotion through improvements in productivity and market competition. This publication examines the reallocation of labour and capital to achieve more efficient use of new sources of competition, technological change and shifting consumer preferences, whilst limiting adjustment costs for individuals, communities and society as a whole. Based on specific sectoral case studies, it includes analysis of the adjustment challenge and policy framework in both developed and developing countries, together with practical recommendations for good practice.
