Book Synopsis Review of the Bureau of Reclamation's Corrosion Prevention Standards for Ductile Iron Pipe by : National Research Council
Download or read book Review of the Bureau of Reclamation's Corrosion Prevention Standards for Ductile Iron Pipe written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-11-19 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ductile iron pipe (DIP) was introduced about 50 years ago as a more economical and better-performing product for water transmission and distribution. As with iron or steel pipes, DIP is subject to corrosion, the rate of which depends on the environment in which the pipe is placed. Corrosion mitigation protocols are employed to slow the corrosion process to an acceptable rate for the application. When to use corrosion mitigation systems, and which system, depends on the corrosivity of the soils in which the pipeline is buried. The Bureau of Reclamation's specification for DIP in highly corrosive soil has been contested by some as an overly stringent requirement, necessitating the pipe to be modified from its as-manufactured state and thereby adding unnecessary cost to a pipeline system. This book evaluates the specifications in question and presents findings and recommendations. Specifically, the authoring committee answers the following questions: Does polyethylene encasement with cathodic protection work on ductile iron pipe installed in highly corrosive soils? Will polyethylene encasement and cathodic protection reliably provide a minimum service life of 50 years? What possible alternative corrosion mitigation methods for DIP would provide a service life of 50 years?

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Synopsis The Design and Application of Controlled Low-strength Materials (flowable Fill) by : Amster K. Howard
Download or read book The Design and Application of Controlled Low-strength Materials (flowable Fill) written by Amster K. Howard and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1998 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focuses on a type of material mainly used in place of compacted backfill for pipe embedment and backfill, but gaining widely in applications. It is a mixture of cementitious material, soil, water, and sometimes fly ash and admixtures. Here 26 papers, from a June 1997 symposium in St. Louis, Missouri, describe new design procedures, new applications, and installation innovations in order to help assess the need for new or revised standards. They cover ingredients, properties, test methods, standards and specifications, case histories, and pipeline applications. The five current standards are appended. Subcommittee on Rural Development, Entrepreneurship, and Trade and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The subcommittee has called this hearing so that members might learn more about coal ash, the small businesses that turn coal ash into useful products and the concerns that these businesses have about the proposed Federal regulations that they believe may have a negative effect on their industry ... The EPA has recently issued two proposals for regulating coal ash. One would regulate coal ash as a solid waste and would provide very limited Federal enforceability and may not provide adequate protection of the environment and human health. The other would list coal ash as a special waste under the Hazardous Waste Subtitle in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Subtitle C. The second option is one that we will focus on ... since it has generated great concerns among small businesses across this country. These businesses, many of which are represented here today, have reason to believe that regulating coal ash under Subtitle C, even as a special waste, will open recycling operations to added litigation and a stigma that will discourage the ... use of the products made with recycled coal ash."--P. 1-2.
