It is important to the ILC design effort to demonstrate that these tolerances can be achieved - ideally using beam-based stability measurements. It has been estimated that RF cavity beam position monitors (BPMs) could provide position measurement resolutions of less than one nanometer and could form the basis of the desired beam-based stability measurement. We have developed a high resolution RF cavity BPM system. A triplet of these BPMs has been installed in the extraction line of the KEK Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) for testing with its ultra-low emittance beam. A metrology system for the three BPMs was recently installed. This system employed optical encoders to measure each BPM's position and orientation relative to a zero-coefficient of thermal expansion carbon fiber frame and has demonstrated that the three BPMs behave as a rigid-body to less than 5 nm. To date, we have demonstrated a BPM resolution of less than 20 nm over a dynamic range of +/- 20 microns.

We have developed a high resolution cavity BPM and associated electronics. A triplet comprised of these BPMs was installed in the extraction line of the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) for testing with its ultra-low emittance beam. The three BPMs were each rigidly mounted inside an alignment frame on six variable-length struts which could be used to move the BPMs in position and angle. We have developed novel methods for extracting the position and tilt information from the BPM signals including a robust calibration algorithm which is immune to beam jitter. To date, we have demonstrated a position resolution of 15.6 nm and a tilt resolution of 2.1 [mu]rad over a dynamic range of approximately ± 20 [mu]m.

Book excerpt: Feedback On Nanosecond Timescales (FONT) is a feedback system being developed to correct the beam position jitter in the extraction line and final focus system at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF2), Tsukuba, Japan. FONT5 is currently being tested and is used to correct the intra-train jitter for a 3-bunch train; the bunch spacing is 154ns. This system measures the position of an electron bunch, using beam position monitors (BPMs). From this measurement, digital feedback electronics calculate the required correction, and sends a pulse to a feedback kicker. The feedback kicker then deflects the next bunch in the train in order to correct its position. Stripline BPMs are used at ATF2, and analogue processors manipulate the BPM signals before they are interpreted by the feedback electronics. The BPM system has been modelled and tested so that it can be parameterised and optimised. The BPMs are calibrated regularly, and the resolution of the system measured. Both of these properties have been analysed and modelled. This has allowed the resolution to be minimised. The resolution is an important factor which limits the achievable feedback correction. Several other factors have also been investigated; these include the feedback gain and the bunch-bunch correlation. To allow the feedback electronics to be controlled remotely, several data acquisition systems (DAQs) have been developed to allow data flow both to and from the digital board. The DAQs have been designed specifically for the firmware on the FONT digital board.

FAR-TECH, Inc., in collaboration with SLAC, is developing a resonant cavity diagnostic to simultaneously measure the dipole, quadrupole and sextupole moments of the beam distribution. Measurements of dipole and quadrupole moments at multiple locations yield information about beam orbit and emittance. The sextupole moment can reveal information about beam asymmetry which is useful in diagnosing beam tail deflections caused by short-range dipole wakefields. In addition to the resonance enhancement of a single-cell cavity, use of a multi-cell standing-wave structure further enhances signal strength and improves the resolution of the device. An estimated resolution is better than 1 {micro}m in rms beam size and better than 1 nm in beam position.

The motherboard processes this data and computes beam intensity and X-Y positions with a resolution of one mm, 100 kHz output bandwidth, and overall latency of ten microseconds. The results are available in both analog and digital format.

Book excerpt: The Alignment Diagnostic System (ADS) of the LCLS undulator system indicates that the 33 undulator quadrupoles have extremely high position stability over many weeks. However, beam trajectory straightness and lasing efficiency degrade more quickly than this. A lengthy Beam Based Alignment (BBA) procedure must be executed every two to four weeks to re-optimize the X-ray beam parameters. The undulator system includes RF cavity Beam Position Monitors (RFBPMs), several of which are utilized by an automatic feedback system to align the incoming electron-beam trajectory to the undulator axis. The beam trajectory straightness degradation has been traced to electronic drifts of the gain and offset of the BPMs used in the beam feedback system. To quickly recover the trajectory straightness, we have developed a fast beam-based procedure to recalibrate the BPMs. This procedure takes advantage of the high-precision monitoring capability of the ADS, which allows highly repeatable positioning of undulator quadrupoles. This report describes the ADS, the position stability of the LCLS undulator quadrupoles, and some results of the new recovery procedure.

At present there is no existing technique, commercial or otherwise, for non-destructive pulse-to-pulse simultaneous beam position and emittance measurement. FARTECH, Inc. is currently developing a high precision cavity-based beam monitor for simultaneous beam position and emittance measurements pulse-to-pulse, without beam interception and without moving parts. The design and analysis of a multi-cavity standing wave structure for a pulse-to-pulse emittance measurement system in which the quadrupole and the dipole standing wave modes resonate at harmonics of the beam operating frequency is presented. Considering the Next Linear Collider beams, an optimized 9-cavity standing wave system is designed for simultaneous high precision beam position and emittance measurements. It operates with the {pi}-quadrupole mode resonating at 16th harmonic of the NLC bunch frequency, and the 3 {pi}/4 dipole mode at 12th harmonic (8.568 GHz). The 9-cavity system design indicates that the two dipoles resonate almost at the same frequency 8.583 GHz and the quadrupole at 11.427 GHz according to the scattering parameter calculations. The design can be trivially scaled so that the dipole frequency is at 8.568 GHz, and the quadrupole frequency can then be tuned during fabrication to achieve the desired 11.424 GHz. The output powers from these modes are estimated for the NLC beams. An estimated rms-beam size resolution is sub micro-meters and beam positions in sub nano-meters.

These small beam sizes introduce an excellent opportunity to develop and test high resolution Radio Frequency Beam Position Monitors (RF-BPMs). These BPMs are designed to measure pulse to pulse beam motion (jitter) at a theoretical resolution of approximately 1 nm. The beam induces a TM110 mode with an amplitude linearly proportional to its charge and displacement from the BPM's (cylindrical cavity) axis. The C-band (5,712 MHz) TM110 signal is processed and converted into beam position for use by the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) control system. Presented are the experimental procedures, acquisition, and analysis of data demonstrating resolution of jitter near 25 nm. With the design of future ee− linear colliders requiring spot sizes close to 3 nm, understanding and developing RF-BPMs will be essential in resolving and controlling jitter.

Book excerpt: The photon beam position monitors (PBPM) on the front end of the 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source (APS) synchrotron facility under construction at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) are precision devices that measure spatial as well as angular positions of the x-ray beams. There exist two such devices on each APS front end, and they are set approximately 4 m apart. The required spatial resolution of these devices is of the order of a few microns; the required angular resolution is less than a micro-radian. These specifications make the material selection, design and stability of the PBPM very challenging tasks. The PBPM blades, which generate the photo-electrons signal from the x-ray beam, are indirectly cooled to prevent overheating by the x-ray beam. Even then, the blade is subject to severe thermal stresses. Prediction of the long-term material and position stability of the PBPM blade requires very careful heat transfer and stress analyses. In this paper, thermal analyses under the prevailing high heat flux from the incident beam and the corresponding stress analyses for various blade configuration are presented. As a result of these analyses, several options in design were developed and compared, including material selection for the blade and its structural detail.
