Book excerpt: Novel forceshoe sensors were developed and compared to existing forceplate force transducer technology. The forceshoe measurements agreed adequately with the forceplates. The forceshoes and forceplates were used to investigate spinal loading of participants during different phases of the patient sling insertion task to see if foot placement constraints such as the forceplate system affected the participants' behaviour and spinal loading. Ten female participants were asked to place a sling under a patient actor. Biomechanical assessments considered loading at the L5/S1 level and psychophysical measures were collected on each participant's ratings of perceived exertion. The highest peak and median loads occurred during the "roll-away" and "leg-strap-alignment" phases. High cumulative loads were encountered during these phases as well as the "tuck-sling" phase. Also, it was found that participants moved their feet less when told to stand within the forceplate boundaries. Wearing the forceshoes was not found to affect spinal loading.

The largest section in the book, on monitoring and telehealth, reveals novel applications of advanced pattern recognition techniques, some of which have, up to now, found roles primarily in the military, process engineering, and financial sectors. Transportation and mobility still represents by far the largest and most commercially lucrative market segment of technology for seniors. There is however a clear trend towards synthesis of information and communication technologies (ICT) and mobility technologies, which is embodied in the latest developments of automatic collision avoidance and full or semi-autonomous navigation functions in powered mobility devices. The last section is dedicated to design issues. It is proposed that designing for the special needs market before making a design as inclusive as possible to the mainstream market is a viable alternative to the currently accepted notion of inclusive design, provided that aesthetics are appropriately addressed. To conclude, we see a social shift from institutional to home-based care, in which information communication technology based solutions now afford the possibility of aging-in-place for the many thousands of people having mild to moderate cognitive impairment.

Portable tools are needed for performing biomechanical evaluations of caregiving work in the field to determine which activities cause back injury. This work describes the design and validation of portable motion capture devices developed for this purpose. Two novel portable motion capture systems were developed. The performance of the novel systems was compared to an existing motion capture system for their ability to estimate resultant forces at the L5/S1 joint by finding the relative three dimensional positions of the L5/S1 joint and feet. The first system (FootCam) was found to estimate resultant forces with insufficient accuracy due to poor coupling of the device with the subject's body. This coupling error was due to inertial effects and bulk tissue movement. The second system (semi-portable) was found to be sufficiently accurate to serve as a portable replacement for existing motion capture systems.

Book excerpt: The Portable Biomechanical Assessment Suite (PBAS) is a suite of sensors to measure the kinematics and kinetics of the human body during lifting tasks. The suite is made up of ten inertial measurement units (IMUs) and the Novel Pedar pressure insoles. The IMUs are made up of an Xbee radio, a triple-axis accelerometer, a dual-axis gyroscope, and a single-axis gyroscope. The data are sent via the 802.15.4 wireless network protocol to a collection device connected to a computer and are stored in a binary data file that is then read and processed by a Matlab program. The output of the program is four data matrices: x-acceleration, y-acceleration, z-angular velocity, and the calculated angular position of each IMU. The pressure insoles are synchronized with the IMUs to measure the ground reaction forces. An initial test was run to determine how battery life, the zero voltage level, and dropout rate change with data transmission time. The tests showed that the IMUs could easily run for five hours with no effect on the dropout rate. The accelerometer was found to have very little zero-drift while the gyroscopes do exhibit some zero drift. This will need to be taken into account for long tests. Three pendulum tests were run to test the IMUs, all yielding good results. The first test used three preliminary IMUs made on breadboards to validate the circuit design and general concept. The next two tests used five final IMUs to measure the kinematics of the pendulum. One test had all IMUs measuring in the sagittal plane while the second test used three sagittal plane IMUs and two IMUs reprogrammed to measure the corresponding signals in the coronal plane. Both tests showed that the IMU signals matched what was expected and validated the network of IMUs for future use in biomechanical testing.

Book excerpt: Snow penetrometers create a specific application for a force sensor with specifications that are over achieved at great cost when using traditional load cells. A moderately priced, compact force sensor suitable for this application does not exist, and numerous force-sensing technologies were investigated, from spring and displacement transducer combinations, to strain gauges mounted on plastics, to pressure transducers. The high dynamic range, linearity, and electrical simplicity of low-cost piezo-resistive pressure sensors lent well to rapidly developing a working design on a small budget. Preliminary prototypes show promising results where the natural frequency requirement is 60% above the target specification at wn = 10497 rad/s +/- 92 rad/s. The sensor is nearly ideally damped with damping ratio, [zeta] = .43 +/- .04. A linear model results in acceptable hysteretic error for mid and upper range force values, but the sensor performs inaccurately below 2.8 N (greater than 20% error). While the sensor's performance isn't perfect for all criteria, snowpack simulation tests suggest that the sensor's shortcomings are acceptable for the targeted application of measuring relative snow hardness.

Book excerpt: The ability to sense forces is critical for ensuring that robots can safely interact with their environment. Nevertheless, there are numerous situations, particularly for medical applications, where environmental and sensor density requirements can pose challenges and constraints to sensor design and implementation. Our previous work presented a novel wireless force sensing paradigm and developed a force sensor based on wave backscattering. However, its large size, rigid design, and the need for an external power supply limited its practical use in medical applications. This work presents a significantly improved and miniaturized force sensor design with wireless and battery-free functions based on a new novel working principle. An end-to-end simulation of the proposed sensor, its fabrication, modeling, and experimental validations in a wired setting is presented. Then, flexible, wireless, and battery-free functions are added to the sensor by improving the sensor interfaces. The sensor performance in a wireless setting is evaluated, and the wireless communication quality is tested to validate the sensor's suitability for medical applications. The proposed sensor can sense forces from 0 N to 6 N. In a wired setting, the sensor's average Root Mean Square (RMS) error was 0.15 N and showed a resolution as high as 0.42 mN. In a wireless setting, the RMS error of the sensor was 0.21 N and had a resolution as high as 150 mN for our sensor prototypes with different interfaces. A demonstration of contact force sensing with the proposed sensors mounted on the body of a continuum robot and a phantom test is presented to show its potential to enable applications in fields such as medical robotics.
