Book excerpt: The main objective of this project was to develop and layout a protocol for the long-term monitoring and assessment of the performance of concrete deck and crack sealants in the field. To accomplish this goal, a total of six bridge decks were chosen for study. The decks have ages that vary from 4 to 30 years old, are all in good condition, though some presented a variety of longitudinal, transverse and diagonal cracking. In each deck, test segments were laid out along one lane in four of the six bridges. Drill powder samples were extracted in each segment in order to determine the in-situ, near-surface chloride ion content of the deck. Laboratory analyses of the samples showed that the chloride ion content varied between 3.2 lb/cy for the younger decks (3 years old) and 20.8 lb/cy for the older decks (28 years old). Based on the recommendations of a previous laboratory investigation, a pool of the best performing deck and crack sealants were selected to be applied in the decks. In two bridges, deck segments were sealed with four deck sealants while one segment was left unsealed to be used as a control segment. Additionally, the cracks in each of these segments were sealed with five crack sealants. While two other decks were also scheduled for sealing as part of this phase of the project, they were not done because the required curing time for some of the products was longer than deemed acceptable by DOT crews for these high traffic bridges. It is recommended, however, that every effort be made to have these decks be sealed in the near future. The remaining two bridges had been sealed at the time of construction. While no specific information could be secured about the product used in these decks, the low chloride ion content in these decks suggested that the applied product has helped reduce the ingress of chloride ions. Therefore, it is recommended that these decks continue to be monitored over time. Based on the inspections and the data collected in the field, a protocol and schedule for the continuing monitoring of sealant performance is presented.

Book excerpt: Current crack sealant specifications utilize a simple empirical bond test [ASTM D5329, "Standard Test Methods for Sealants and Fillers, Hot-Applied, for Joints and Cracks in Asphaltic and Portland Cement Concrete Pavements"] to measure a sealant's ability to adhere to concrete briquettes. However, no correlation exists between the results of this standard test and a sealant's field performance. To bridge the gap between sealants' fundamental properties and field performance, performance-based guidelines for the selection of hot-poured crack sealants have been developed. This paper proposes a new test procedure to help assess the capability of sealants to adhere to the sides of cracks in pavement. The proposed crack sealant adhesion direct tensile (CSADT) test procedure calls for the use of a direct tensile tester with modifications to the end pieces and the specimen holder. Sealant is confined between two aluminum pieces, which will move apart at 0.05 mm/s until failure occurs. Failure load and the displacement at failure are recorded and then used to assess the sealant's adhesion capability. A crack created on one side of the assembly during specimen preparation determines the initial failure location and ensures that the failure occurs at the interface and not within the sealant. The specimen preparation is designed to simulate sealant installation, and experimental conditions have been developed to represent crack openings during pavement contraction in cold weather. The repeatability of the suggested procedure was acceptable with an average coefficient of variation of 10.9 %. No significant difference existed between two operators or between two test setups.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes a comprehensive research effort to validate thresholds for performance-based guidelines and grading system for hot-poured asphalt crack sealants. A series of performance tests were established in earlier research and include the crack sealant bending beam rheometer (CSBBR), crack sealant direct tension test (CSDTT), the crack sealant adhesion test (CSAT), a rotational viscosity test, and a dynamic shear test. Validation was accomplished through an extensive field performance study incorporating a wide spectrum of commonly used sealants installed in eight test sites around the United States using two basic treatment methods: (1) clean and seal, and (2) rout and seal. Performance of these sealants and treatment methods were monitored for 3 years to quantify relative performance, primarily through adhesive and cohesive failures, as well as overband wear. Field samples were also collected from the sites to conduct laboratory testing to reflect in-service properties. A statistical method was used to develop correlations of the tests parameters with the field performance. The composite score approach, combining ranking and correlation, was used to develop a quantitative scale for determining the level of acceptance. Based on the composite score, a strong or acceptable correlation was obtained between field performance and laboratory test parameters. After the correlation between field performance and lab results was confirmed, the thresholds for test methods were selected or fine-tuned. An investigation was also conducted to evaluate the short-term and long-term aging effects of hot-poured crack sealants through a differential aging test. Rheological and mechanical properties of sealants at different aging stages were monitored to characterize the aging effects. Laboratory aging of sealants was studied using three different aging methods: kettle aging, melter aging, and vacuum oven aging (VOA). The aging index was used to evaluate the effect of these aging methods. By a comparison of the stiffness master curves obtained from the CSBBR test for field-aged samples and laboratory-aged samples, VOA was validated as a reasonable aging method for simulating 2 to5 years of field aging. The research proposes new guidelines for full implementation as AASHTO specifications. In addition to validated and revised thresholds for existing protocols, the research proposed a modified adhesion test and a simplified test for tracking resistance. Close inspection of the installation techniques and early performance feedback also supported the development of guidelines for crack sealant installation and application.

However, most current crack sealants have been reported to have a very short life mainly due to adhesive failures. Although adhesive failure is known to be the major failure mechanism very little attention has been paid to measuring this property in the laboratory. The main objective of this project was to develop a performance related adhesion test using TxDOTs Overlay Tester. In this report the crack sealant adhesion test protocol developed in year 1 of this study was finalized. The final test protocol includes a molding jig, a detailed sample preparation procedure, an adhesion test protocol, and criteria for interpreting the results. In this study 13 sealants (some of them have never been used in Texas) were evaluated following the proposed test protocol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current crack sealant specifications focus on using simple empirical tests such as penetration, resilience, flow, and bonding to cement concrete briquettes (ASTM D 6690) [1] to measure the ability of the material to resist cohesive and adhesive failures. There is, however, no indication of the pertinence of these standard tests to predict the success of field installation and sealant performance. In an effort to bridge the gap between sealant fundamental properties and field performance, performance-based guidelines for the selection of hot-poured crack sealants are currently being developed. This paper proposes a new viscosity test procedure to help assess the propensity of sealants to wet the crack surface during installation. The proposed procedure calls for the use of a Brookfield rotational viscometer equipped with a modified spindle rod and an SC4-27 spindle at a speed of 60 r/min. Sealants are heated 20 min at the recommended installation temperature and the viscosity is measured after 30 s of spindle rotation in the hot sealant. These experimental conditions provide viscosities representative of sealant viscosity at shear rates during field application. The repeatability for within laboratory and between laboratories was found to be 5.4 and 17 %, respectively. This repeatability is comparable with the corresponding variability of the SuperPave viscosity test for asphalt binders.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the current state of practice for crack sealing/filling. In addition, the INDOT crack sealing/filling practice was experimentally evaluated for the effectiveness of crack sealing/filling, the effectiveness of routing, the performance of the different types of crack sealants and fillers, the validity of sealant performance grade system, and the crack sealing/filling equipment performance. The key findings from an extensive literature review and nationwide/statewide survey performed in 2012 are the following: (1) 65% of the responses indicated that the routing is required for the crack sealing/filling application; (2) ASTM D 6690 Type II was the most widely used sealant type and only Missouri and Indiana included emulsions in their specifications as crack sealing/filling materials; and (3) crack sealing/filling equipment availability and their maintenance were the biggest concerns.Based on the two-year experimental investigation, the crack sealing/filling was determined to be effective in preventing the occurrence of pavement surface crack distress. The crack sealing/filling was concluded to be effective in maintaining crack integrity and resisting sealant and filler deformations due to the seasonal crack movement. The routing was not determined to be effective in terms of the pavement performances. However, Adhesive/Cohesive/Spalling (ACS) failure results showed that the routed sections significantly outperformed the non-routed sections. In addition, the test results indicated that the ASTM 6690 Type II crack sealants performed relatively well in terms of pavement and crack performance. The correlation between the sealant performance grades and the pavement and crack performances with different types of sealants and fillers were poor and insignificant. The experimental results showed that the cracks on wet pavement treated with HAL had significantly higher bonding between the materials and asphalt pavement surface than the cracks treated with the conventional air compressor. Therefore, the incorporation of a hot air lance in the wet condition is recommended to extend the operable time and seasonal availability for crack filling and sealing construction (2070 and 2090 Activities).

Book excerpt: Among these six performance parameters, stiffness at 240s of 25MPa, average creep rate of 0.31 mm/mm/s, and extendibility level at different temperatures were identified and proposed as selection criteria for crack sealant at low temperature. These parameters were used to assess several in-service crack sealants with known field performance. The results show that the proposed tests and performance parameters are highly correlated with sealant field performance when compared to current ASTM specification standards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crack sealing is a practice used for routine and preventive maintenance as part of a pavement's preservation strategy. However, crack sealant failures are common in Texas, particularly within the first 3 years of application (or service life). The major causes of sealant failures can be classified under two categories: Adhesion failure and cohesion failure. Although both failures can lead to a significant reduction in the service life of a pavement structure, adhesive failure is in most cases the dominant failure type. Several laboratory tests such as rotational viscosity, penetration, softening point, ductility, and bond tests are currently used to evaluate the properties of crack sealants. Among these tests, the bond test is specifically used to evaluate the adhesive failure of crack sealants and the procedure of the bond test is well documented in ASTM D5329-07. However, the bond test often takes several days to complete, and the pass/fail criterion is determined through visual observation, which is a very subjective process. Furthermore, the correlation between the bond test and adhesive failure performance of crack sealants in the field was found to be either weak or non-existent. In an attempt to minimize these problems, a simple, fast, and adhesive performance-related laboratory test method is developed in this paper to ensure the proper selection of a sealant for a given project.
