Book excerpt: Sulfonation process was used to produce ion exchange polymer from a commercial polysulfone .Membranes obtained from the sulfonated polysulfone (SPSU) are potential substitutes for perflourosulfonic acid membrane (NafionTM) used now in polymer electrolyte fuel cell due to its high cost to produce, needs of high pressure and high hydration level to operate effectively. Sulfonations were achieved by varying the degree of sulfonation (DS) in reaction time. Characterizations of different degree of sufonated polysulfone membranes were conducted through elemental analysistal, Fourier Transform Infared (FTIR) and swelling test. Fourier Transform Infared (FTIR) were used to confirm the presence of sulfonic group in the polymer after sulfonation process and it was clearly confirmed by the SO3 stretching bond at frequency 1020 cm-1 to 1035cm-1. The hydration levels of membrane were measured via swelling test. Result showed the percentages of water and methanol uptake broadening as the degree of sulfonation increased.

Book excerpt: The objective of this studies is to develop and characterize sulfonated polyethersulfone membrane (SPES) for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell application. In the experiment, polyethersulfone were sulfonated with different reaction time before continue making the dope solution. The membranes were tested with water uptake, Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to analyze the membrane performance. The swelling test result showed that the value of water uptake % were directly proportional to the reaction time of sulfonation. Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) result showed that higher reaction time of sulfonation, the higher of the glass transitions temperature (Tg) and melting temperature (Tm) of the SPES. SPES 6 sample gave the best result compared to the other samples with 63.13°C glass transition temperature and 92.87°C melting temperature. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed that the membrane has symmetric structure.

Book excerpt: Sulfonation process was used to produce ion exchange polymer from a commercial polyethersulfone. Sulfonations were achieved by varying the degree of sulfonation (DS) in reaction time. Water and methanol uptake analysis showed this SPES6 have the potential to use in proton exchange membrane fuel cell application compared to another membrane. Methanol uptake analysis showed Nafion 117 have no potential to use in direct methanol fuel cell application because the tendency of Nafion to swell is very high. FTIR analysis showed that the peak of sulfonic group was appeared at wavelength 1072 to 1074 cm-1. TGA analysis showed that the range temperature that was assigned to the degradation of the polymer main chain at around 400°C.

Book excerpt: Sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) with 20% concentration by weight were prepared with concentrated sulfonic acid at room temperature. Membrane solution developed in this study consisted of polyethersulfone dissolved in N,N - Dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent, fuming sulfuric acid (36%) and concentrated sulfuric acid (95%-97%) as the sulfonating agent. The solution was cast manually at temperature between 25oC-28 oC. The investigation on water uptake, TGA, CHNOS elemental analysis, and FTIR has been conducted. Successful introduction of the sulfonated groups was confirmed by using the FTIR spectra in the wave number range 1020cm-1-1030 cm-1 which attributed to the symmetrical stretch of the sulfonated group. It was found that sulfonated membrane produced from mixed sulfonating agent (98% H2SO4 and 36% H2SO4.SO3) have higher degree of swelling. The type and ratio of the sulfonating agent has been identified as one of the most influential parameter in determining the bonding of -HCO3 as well as the membrane performance thus, producing different morphology. The parameter such as sulfonating agent ratio and type used strongly affects the membrane performance. -Author-

Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to prepare a mixed matrix of sulfonated polysulfone (SPSU) and polyethersulfone (PES) and investigate its potential for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) application. Four samples were prepared in this study, a sample of PSU/PES as a reference and 3 other samples SPSU/PES with the amount of sulfonating agent (trimethylsilyl chlorosulfonate, TMSCS) varied for each sample (10mL, 15mL and 20mL). The sulfonated membrane samples (SPSU/PES 1, SPSU/PES 2 and SPSU/PES 3) were prepared in 20 hours stirring time, 10 minutes of TMSCS dropwise time and 15 minutes of sodium methoxide dropwise time. FTIR test confirmed that the sulfonation process was successful for all three sulfonated samples where wavelength of 1029.27 cm-1 detected for sample SPSU/PES 1, 1035.75 cm-1 for sample SPSU/PES 2 and 1031.52 cm-1 for sample SPSU/PES 3. Referring to water/methanol mixture uptake test, sample SPSU/PES 3 had the highest swelling degree with the amount of 62.93% followed by SPSU/PES 2 (58.95%), SPSU/PES 1 (46.9%) and PSU/PES (33.43%). Elemental analysis was done in order to obtain data for degree of sulfonation calculation. From the calculation, it was found that sample SPSU/PES 3 has the highest degree of sulfonation (72.53%) followed by SPSU/PES 2 (55.49%) and SPSU/PES 1 (38.46%).-Author-

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late-1960’s, perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSAs) ionomers have dominated the PEM fuel cell industry as the membrane material of choice. The “gold standard’ amongst the many variations that exist today has been, and to a great extent still is, DuPont’s Nafion® family of materials. However, there is significant concern in the industry that these materials will not meet the cost, performance, and durability requirementsnecessary to drive commercialization in key market segments – es- cially automotive. Indeed, Honda has already put fuel cell vehicles in the hands of real end users that have home-grown fuel cell stack technology incorporating hydrocarbon-based ionomers. “Polymer Membranes in Fuel Cells” takes an in-depth look at the new chem- tries and membrane technologies that have been developed over the years to address the concerns associated with the materials currently in use. Unlike the PFSAs, which were originally developed for the chlor-alkali industry, the more recent hydrocarbon and composite materials have been developed to meet the specific requirements of PEM Fuel Cells. Having said this, most of the work has been based on derivatives of known polymers, such as poly(ether-ether ketones), to ensure that the critical requirement of low cost is met. More aggressive operational requi- ments have also spurred the development on new materials; for example, the need for operation at higher temperature under low relative humidity has spawned the creation of a plethora of new polymers with potential application in PEM Fuel Cells.

Book excerpt: The need for sustainable energy use has motivated the exploration of renewable alternative fuels and fuel conversion technology on a global scale. Fuel cells, which convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy with high efficiency and low emissions, provide a promising strategy for achieving energy sustainability. The current progress in fuel cell commercialization is mainly in portable and stationary applications, but fuel cell technology for transportation applications, which make up a substantial portion of the global energy market, have seen little commercial success. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have high potential for addressing the future energy needs of the transportation energy sector. However, one of the prevailing limitations of the PEMFC is the availability of high-performance, cost-effective electrolyte materials. These materials may be realized in the near future by developing multi-functional polymer blends targeted at specific performance capabilities. Due to the near-infinite possibilities of polymer combinations and processing techniques high-throughput polymer characterization techniques are necessary to effectively and systematically screen for optimal materials and relevant structure-property relationships. In this work, a high-throughput mass transport assay (HT-MTA) has been developed to characterize water flux and permeability at multiple sample locations in parallel. The functionality of HT-MTA was evaluated using standard Nafion® films and a model semi-interpenetrated polymer network with commercial polyvinylidine fluoride as the host matrix for a proprietary polyelectrolyte supplied by Arkema, Inc. To further demonstrate the utility of HT-MTA, the instrument was incorporated into the lab's current high-throughput characterization toolset and used to investigate the mechanisms and effects of rapid free radical degradation of Nafion® membranes based on various concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and iron(II) sulfate in solution. The results have been used suggest the effects of these regent components on preferential degradation pathways and will prove to be useful in later simulating the membrane performance during in-situ fuel cell lifetime which is both time-intensive and costly. The high-throughput toolset was also used to develop a novel optimized blend consisting of polyetherimide (PEI), a low-cost high performance resin, and sulfonated PEI (S-PEI) made using a relatively mild post sulfonation reaction with trimethylsilyl chlorosulfonate. The effects of blend composition and thermal annealing on film performance were evaluated and the polymer system was shown to have optimal performance properties that should prove to be useful in other high-performance applications where mechanical strength is critical. In general, this work shows promising results for efficiently developing advanced polymer materials using high-throughput screening techniques.
