Book excerpt: The introduction of a new imaging approach for simultaneous multi-phase and multi-constituent velocity measurements is the main focus of this research. The proposed approach is based on the use of a single off-the-shelf colour camera which will enable simultaneous imaging of phases/constituents which are colourtagged using fluorescent droplets and multi-wavelength illumination. Highly efficient florescent tracers used to seed the constituents are presented and their visibility in full field imaging experiments is evaluated. A commonly found problem in experimental systems using laser illumination, known as flare, is discussed and the application of the developed fluorescent tracers for its reduction is presented. A strong focus of the imaging approach proposed is its flexibility and simplicity allowing its extension to stereoscopic imaging to obtain simultaneous multi-phase/constituent 3-component measurements with the addition of a second imaging camera. Proof of principle experiments with spatially separated and well mixed flows are presented for which successful phase discrimination is obtained and the uncertainty of the measurements is estimated. The imaging system developed is applied for simultaneous air and fuel velocimetry measurements in a Gasoline Direct Injection spray for which a more detailed understating of the interaction mechanisms is required to generate improved designs. The modified imaging system and experimental setup are presented and previously unavailable simultaneous air/fuel 2 and 3-component velocity fields are presented and analysed.

Book excerpt: Results from several applications of particle image velocimetry (PIV) to unsteady flows at a laboratory scale have been published, and commercial products are now available for more general laboratory use, but for certain industrially important applications, reliable equipment is often available only from in-house research and development teams. This PIV handbookis intended to transfer know-how from PIV development laboratories to end-users in industry and universities. The book discusses the scientific and technical aspects required to set up a PIV system, allows users to assess the problems involved in the application of PIV, and enables them to design, optimize, and use PIV systems to meet their special needs.

It is looking at the same time for improved aerodynamic performance, for evident competitive reasons. Advanced, computer based design systems, including fast and reliable numerical flow solvers, have been developed in the last decade including new turbulence models. On the experimental side, measurement techniques in general have also been improved significantly, however the data evaluation process remains still very time consuming, and unsteady effects and turbulence are often not being captured with sufficient accuracy and detail. The development of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) has helped to improve the analysis of the flow fields. After investigations in laboratory scale wind tunnels, a joint initiative on PIV research, by the European Aerospace Research Establishments, within GARTEUR have enabled a wide breakthrough of this new technology in Europe. Within the Research Framework Program of the European Union, the joint research project EUROPIV aimed to apply PIV technology to problems of industrial interest.

Book excerpt: Particle image velocimetry, or PIV, refers to a class of methods used in experimental fluid mechanics to determine instantaneous fields of the vector velocity by measuring the displacements of numerous fine particles that accurately follow the motion of the fluid. Although the concept of measuring particle displacements is simple in essence, the factors that need to be addressed to design and implement PIV systems that achieve reliable, accurate, and fast measurements and to interpret the results are surprisingly numerous. The aim of this book is to analyze and explain them comprehensively.

Book excerpt: Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a non-intrusive optical measurement technique which allows capturing several thousand velocity vectors within large flow fields instantaneously. Today, the PIV technique has spread widely and differentiated into many distinct applications, from micro flows over combustion to supersonic flows for both industrial needs and research. Over the past decade the measurement technique and the hard- and software have been improved continuously so that PIV has become a reliable and accurate method for "real life" investigations. Nevertheless there is still an ongoing process of improvements and extensions of the PIV technique towards 3D, time resolution, higher accuracy, measurements under harsh conditions and micro- and macroscales. This book gives a synopsis of the main results achieved during the EC-funded network PivNet 2 as well as a survey of the state-of-the-art of scientific research using PIV techniques in different fields of application.

Book excerpt: The contents of this volume reflect to a large extent the efforts made by a group of Institutes at the ETH Zürich to develop new techniques for measurements of flows in fluids in the last decade. The motivation came from the study of tr~sport and mixing processes in natural and industrial systems. One of the characteristic properties of turbulence is its high mixing efficiency. The techniques developed are therefore suitable, although not exclusively, for turbulence measurements. They can be subdivided into point-measurements and field-measurements. The aim of the point-measurements developed is to determine the three components of the velocity and all their first derivatives with good temporal resolution and accuracy in turbulent flows. The old and weIl established method of hot-wire anemometry was used for this purpose. One of the main achievements in this context is the construction of miniature multi-wire probes. This technique was introduced to the Institute of Hydromechanics and Water Resources Management of ETH Zürich by Profs. A. Tsinober and E. Kit from Tel-Aviv University. This was made possible by the generous financial support by ETH, for which I would like to express my gratitude on this occasion. In addition, Dr. F.E. Joergensen from DANTEC contributed an example of recent developments in the hardware ofConstant Temperature Anemometry (CTA), for which I am very thankful.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a compiled collection of works on the development of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and micro PIV for near-wall flow measurements. PIV has been used to study many large scale industrial and biological flows, and micro PIV is increasingly utilised in micro-biological and micro-fluidic flow measurements. Both of the methods however suffer significant errors in the measurements of near wall flows due to the effects of the wall boundary and high velocity gradients. In addition, micro PIV suffers significant errors due to volume illumination and the resultant imaging of out-of-focus particles. Many important phenomena such as near-wall turbulence, near-wall transportation of particles or blood cells occur in near-wall regions, and significant improvement of PIV and micro PIV is required. This thesis is devoted to providing solutions to this demand by proposing three new PIV and micro PIV measurement techniques: image overlapping, volumetric-correlation PIV and interfacial PIV. Although these techniques can be applied to general applications, they have been optimised for biological applications. Image overlapping, when applied to micro PIV data, improves the measurement accuracy by effectively reducing the effect of out-of-focus particles. In micro PIV the imaging of out-of-focus particles by volume illumination causes significant measurement bias over the measurement depth. Image overlapping improves measurement accuracy significantly more than currently available techniques, while requiring fewer computational resources. In contrast to improving micro PIV accuracy by reducing the out-of-focus effect, volumetric-correlation PIV (VPIV) utilises this effect to provide 3-dimensional, 2-component (3D2C) velocity fields. VPIV is further extended to uniquely measure particle concentration. The concentration measurements improve the velocity measurement accuracy and provide additional information to study near-wall particle transport phenomena. VPIV simplifies 3D velocity measurements while requiring cheaper hardware. Challenging PIV and micro PIV measurements of flows near curved walls are further resolved by interfacial PIV. In this technique the fluid regions near curved walls are straightened by conformal transformation and a wall-normal velocity profile, with one-pixel resolution, is obtained utilising a novel line-correlation function and curve fitting.Interfacial PIV substantially simplifies the manual image rotation normally required in traditional PIV techniques, while increasing both the resolution of the near-wall velocity profiles and the accuracy of the wall-shear velocity gradient.
