Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed and historical account of both theory and practice, this book attempts to make sense of the loose and little understood field of development administration. The book focuses on development administration over forty years and identifies key attributes of public bureaucracy which are associated with bureaucratic performance. The associations between bureaucracy's attributes and performance are employed in explaining development differences between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago over the period 1960-1995. Associations are explored at the macro level through aggregate data and at the micro level through fascinating case studies of the Industrial Development Corporations (IDCs), associated with economic growth, and the Ministry of Education, associated with women's empowerment. The study establishes clear patterns of associations in the empirical cases and explores the implications of these findings for the theory of development administration.

Book Synopsis The Dynamics of Development and Development Administration by : Kempe R. Hope
Download or read book The Dynamics of Development and Development Administration written by Kempe R. Hope and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1984-06-19 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kempe Ronald Hope provides, for the first time, a clear analysis and synthesis of economics and development administration, as well as an appraisal of the problems associated with the application of these concepts in Third World nations. Combining both theory and practice, and providing concrete examples, Hope begins by detailing the evolution of the concept of development from the inter-war years through the 1950s when the expression Third World first emerged, to the 1970s and the present when wholesale technology transfer and other new approaches emphasizing economic independence began to take precedence. The chapters that follow chart the history of modern development administration focusing on important issues such as the role of the development administrator in the implementation of public policy; the function of the public servant versus that of the politician; bureaucracy in government; and the increasing need for technical personnel to carry out development policies.
Book Synopsis Social Inclusion and Economic Development in Latin America by : Mayra Buvinić
Download or read book Social Inclusion and Economic Development in Latin America written by Mayra Buvinić and published by IDB. This book was released on 2004 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty and inequality in Latin America are easily recognizable in the faces of women, Afro-descendents, the indigenous, people with disabilities, victims of HIV/AIDS, and other groups outside the societal mainstream. Social Inclusion and Economic Development in Latin America reviews the common features of these excluded populations, including their invisibility in official statistics and the stigma, discrimination, and disadvantages they have long endured. But it also examines the region's inclusionary policies and programs that can improve access by these groups to the quality social services and economic and political resources these groups need to level the playing field. Case studies examine ethnic and racial political organization, gender quotas, and labor markets across the region, and social exclusion in Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru. Comparative studies summarize social inclusion policies of both the European Union and selected countries on the Continent.

Book Synopsis Managing for Development Results by : Roberto García López
Download or read book Managing for Development Results written by Roberto García López and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results-based management (RBM) is a public management strategy that involves decision making based on reliable information regarding the effects of governmental actions on society. It has been adopted in various developed countries as a way of improving efficiency and effectiveness in public policy. In Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries, governments and public managers show increasing interest in this management strategy. Given the relative novelty of RBM in the region, however, there is scant literature on the subject. This book is intended to fill this gap in two ways. First, it seeks to describe some of the basic RBM concepts and adapt them according to regional characteristics. Second, it presents an assessment, based on studies carried out in 25 countries, of the challenges facing LAC countries and their capacity to implement results-based public management.
