For most of modern history, however, rural Ireland and Irish agriculture were comparatively underdeveloped. This changed dramatically in the twentieth century, during which they were transformed. In 1900 they were synonymous with poverty; by 2000 they had become synonymous with progress. Many people and organizations contributed to this, but chief among these were the Irish agricultural advisory services.First established in the early 1900s, they are today operated as a public service by Teagasc, Ireland's Agriculture and Food Development Authority. With their establishment, agricultural instructors, trained to the highest international standards, were dispatched to every community in rural Ireland. Their brief was to work with farmers, helping them to improve their farm enterprises and, in so doing, to develop rural Ireland. This gradually bore fruit, as each succeeding generation of agricultural advisors and farmers cooperated to adopt the most modern agricultural approaches. This book tells their story.

The introduction of co-operative societies into the Irish countryside during the late-nineteenth century transformed rural society and created an enduring economic legacy. Civilising rural Ireland challenges predominant narratives of Irish history that explain the emergence of the nation-state through the lens of political conflict and violence. Instead the book takes as its focus the numerous leaders, organisers, and members of the Irish co-operative movement. Together these people captured the spirit of change as they created a modern Ireland through their reorganisation of the countryside, the spread of new economic ideas, and the promotion of mutually-owned businesses. Besides giving a comprehensive account of the co-operative movement’s introduction to Irish society the book offers an analysis of the importance of these radical economic ideas upon political Irish nationalism.

Book excerpt: What exactly did the split over the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 actually mean? We know it both established the independent Irish state and that Ireland would not be a fully sovereign republic and provided for the partition of Northern Ireland. The Treaty was ratified 64 votes to 57 by the Sinn Fein members of the Revolutionary Dail Eireann, splitting Sinn Fein irrevocably and leading to the Irish Civil War, a rupture that still defines the Irish political landscape a century on. Drawing together the work of a diverse range of scholars, who each re-examine this critical period in Irish political history from a variety of perspectives, The Anglo-Irish Treaty Debates addresses this vexed historical and political question for a new generation of readers in the ongoing Decade of Commemorations, to determine what caused the split and its consequences that are still felt today.

Book excerpt: The changing methods of crop and livestock production during the 'Age of Improvement' in Ireland, and some of the ways in which they shaped rural society and the landscape. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated book examines Irish rural society and its basic social unit - the family farm - as well as important issues such as neighborly ties and the use of hired labor. It discusses ways in which recent history is communicated by country people in oral testimonies, local songs and poems, and in rural events, such as plowing matches and threshing festivals. Museum and heritage center displays are examined, showing how the historical narratives presented by professionals are also based on value judgments and stereotypes, as well as valid historical data. The book does not neglect the negative aspects of rural life, but overall its intention is explicitly celebratory, presenting past experience as a victory over almost impossible odds, and a triumph of decency, intelligence, and generosity. *** "Bell and Watson declare that 'there is little doubt that community life in rural Ireland has been greatly weakened by depopulation, farm consolidation and mechanization. However, the sense of belonging that comes from . . . a shared heritage, symbolically reaffirmed in festivals and other heritage products, is alive and well.' The illustrations and photographs are treasures unto themselves. Bravo!" - The Celtic Connection, June 2015 [Subject: History, Irish Studies, Agricultural Studies]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: As rural Ireland undergoes deep-reaching changes, this book critically assesses what the author terms the "renegotiation of rural development" in Ireland through the repackaging, reproduction and representation of suggestions, ideas and alternatives for rural renewal. Deconstructing the process and practice of rural development in Ireland, the author explores the new approaches to development and the so-called desire for creating integrative policy and planning approaches. The main conduits for this investigation are those of partnership and community groups and their involvement in rural development issues. Further, through investigation of the relevant concepts and theories of rural change, the volume delves into the discourses of rurality and development and utilizes the diversity of approaches and understanding of, this increasingly complex issue.

Book excerpt: The chapters in this book offer a range of impressive new studies on the history of education in Ireland, based on detailed research and drawing on important sources. This book also serves to show the healthy state of the history of education in Ireland. In particular, the book also seeks to understand how both teachers and pupils in Ireland experienced education, and how they ‘received’ education policies and education change. The lived reality of education is woven through the chapters in this book, while the impact of policy on education practice is illuminated many times, and with great clarity. This book is a very important contribution not only to the history of education, but also more widely to social history, women’s history, church history and political history. It was originally published as a special issue of the journal History of Education.

Book excerpt: This volume represents the continuation of the initiative and vision of the Agricultural History Society of Ireland (AHSI) in publishing on topics related to rural and agricultural developments in Ireland. It marks their contribution to the Irish national discourse during the Irish 'decade of commemorations'. Contributors to this volume include established academics and early career researchers. The volume fills many gaps in scholarship in a number of key areas of Irish rural history. In chapters discussing and assessing the divergent political aspirations of rural communities, the refocusing of agricultural education during this period of change, social and political transition of the largely rural population, and analysis of cultural positioning of Ireland pre and post revolution, this book will appeal to anyone with an interest in agricultural and rural matters as well as students of Irish history.
