Book excerpt: Although stem rust has been controlled by means of resistant cultivars, leaf and stripe rust continue as problems for many growing areas of the world. Wheat Rusts: An Atlas of Resistance Genes has been prepared by specialists from one of the leading international laboratories, and illustrates with colour photographs typical resistance phenotypes associated with most known genes for resistance to the three rust diseases of wheat. Relevant details for each gene include chromosome location, aspects of genetics and pathogen variation, the effects of environment on expression, origin, availability in genetic and breeding stocks, and use in agriculture. This atlas includes an introduction to host:pathogen genetics, methodologies for wheat rust research and breeding for resistance.

Book excerpt: Genetic engineering and biotechnology along with conventional breeding have played an important role in developing superior cultivars by transferring economically important traits from distant, wild and even unrelated species to the cultivated varieties which otherwise could not have been possible with conventional breeding. There is a vast amount of literature pertaining to the genetic improvement of crops over last few decades. However, the wonderful results achieved by crop scientists in food legumes’ research and development over the years are scattered in different journals of the World. The two volumes in the series ‘Alien Gene Transfer in Crop Plants’ address this issue and offer a comprehensive reference on the developments made in major food crops of the world. These volumes aim at bringing the contributions from globally renowned scientists at one platform in a reader-friendly manner. The 1st volume entitled, ‘Alien Gene Transfer in Crop Plants: Innovations, Methods and Risk Assessment” will deal exclusively with the process and methodology. The contents of this volume have been designed to appraise the readers with all the theoretical and practical aspects of wide hybridization and gene transfer like processes and methods of gene transfer, role of biotechnology with special reference to embryo rescue, genetic transformation, protoplast fusion and molecular marker technology, problems such as cross incompatibility and barriers to distant hybridization and solutions to overcome them. Since wild and weedy relatives of crop plants may have negative traits associated with them, there are always possibilities of linkage drag while transferring alien alleles. Therefore, problems and limitations of alien gene transfer from these species will also be discussed in this series. Further, the associated risks with this and assessment of risks will also be given due weightage.

Crop breeding is used for improving the quality of food for humans and animals. It is accomplished using techniques of classical plant breeding and complex molecular techniques. New varieties of crops that are more productive, have higher climatic adaptability and disease resistance are being developed to optimize agricultural productivity. Modern biotechnological tools of marker-assisted selection, double haploids, reverse breeding and genetic modification are evolving methodologies of crop breeding. This book is a compilation of chapters that discuss the most vital concepts and emerging trends in the science of crop breeding, especially from the perspective of genetic and genomic studies. Multiple approaches, evaluations and methodologies have been included in this book to cover the recent advances in this field. It will be beneficial to experts and students seeking detailed information in this domain.

Book excerpt: The underground hardcore scene of the mid to late 1980s was UK punk rock's last significant creative gasp. Emerging from the wreckage of the anarcho-punk scene spawned by the likes of Crass and Conflict, it took its influences from the studs 'n' leather punk bands of the early 1980s such as Discharge and GBH. These bands pushed musical boundaries into new avenues of extremity, helping to shape the alternative music scene of today. Trapped in a Scene is the long-awaited closing volume of Ian Glasper's celebrated trilogy on the UK punk scene of the 1980s.
