Download or read book Parental Involvement and Social Background in Canada and Germany written by IMOGEN FELD. and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2018 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study 2011 (PIRLS 2011) illustrate yet again that the association between reading achievement of fourth graders and social background in Germany is high compared to the OECD-country mean. This relation is less pronounced for the Canadian Provinces that are participating in PIRLS 2011. The present study conducts a comparative analysis between Germany and the participating Canadian Provinces concerning the association between parental involvement, social background, and reading achievement. This direct country comparison is extended by conducting analyses on performance groups as well as on differences between the Canadian provinces Quebec and Ontario. The approach of the current study is to use general results of large-scale assessment data to identify differences between countries and groups and to provide a more in-depth analysis of the data. A broad literature review helps to interpret the results more accurately taking additional information about the country contexts into account. Book excerpt: The first graduate conference of the Young Scholars' Network of the Association for Canadian Studies in German-speaking countries took place in Berlin in 2004. The conference has been an integral part of the academic year in Canadian Studies ever since. It offers an opportunity for young scholars to present their B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. projects and receive feedback and helpful suggestions from peers and experts. This type of academic exchange is particularly important in Canadian Studies as they often occupy a marginal position at universities. Beside graduate students from Canada, Germany and Austria, prominent Canadian scholars have also been invited to speak at the conference every year. This volume contains selected contributions (in English, German and French) presented at the first five graduate conferences and demonstrates the large scope of Canadian studies in German-speaking countries.

With the support of the German National Socialist Party, Canadian pro-Nazi institutions were formed: clubs, rallies, schools, and newspapers. The movement ended in failure. The author analyzes the reasons for the formation and decline of the National Socialist Party in Canada, describing in the process the general characteristics of the German community in Canada, the extent of Nazi activity in this country, and the influence of the Canadian environment on the movement. The book, well researched and carefully documented, is an original contribution to Canadian history of the 1930s.
Book Synopsis Nation Builders and Enemy Aliens by : Gerhard P. Bassler
Download or read book Nation Builders and Enemy Aliens written by Gerhard P. Bassler and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today German Canadians are among Canada’s most assimilated citizens, often distinguishable from other Canadians by their name only. For centuries their pioneer farmers, economic developers, industrialists, professionals, musicians, artists, missionaries, fisherman, boat builders, and soldiers have acquired an acknowledged reputation as nation builders in Canada. Not too long ago, however, they were also associated with Canada’s enemy in two world wars, discriminated against, and subjected to infringements of their citizenship rights. Virtually overnight, Canadians of German-speaking background were recast into disloyal enemy aliens. Anti-German sentiments and stigmas, unknown in Canada before World War I, became firmly entrenched and have obliterated their legacy as nation builders. This book documents and illustrates how German Canadians have experienced Canada and how Canada has experienced German Canadians over the course of four centuries. It shows what influence Canada’s relations with Germany had on this development. This is the first comprehensive synopsis of the German experience in Canada.
