This book was released on 2003 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The focus of the essays is the investigation of the sociolinguistic phenomenon of German linguistic enclaves with respect to language contact, language history, dialectology and language politics. The multifaceted linguistic and sociolinguistic developments, which German language varieties separated from the German-speaking homeland undergo, converge in the final analysis in the juxtaposition of language maintenance and language loss.
Book Synopsis The Position of the German Language in the World by : Ulrich Ammon
Download or read book The Position of the German Language in the World written by Ulrich Ammon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Position of the German Language in the World focuses on the global position of German and the factors which work towards sustaining its use and utility for international communication. From the perspective of the global language constellation, the detailed data analysis of this substantial research project depicts German as an example of a second-rank language. The book also provides a model for analysis and description of international languages other than English. It offers a framework for strengthening the position of languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Spanish and others and for countering exaggerated claims about the global monopoly position of English. This comprehensive handbook of the state of the German language in the world was originally published in 2015 by Walter de Gruyter in German and has been critically acclaimed. Suitable for scholars and researchers of the German language, the handbook shows in detail how intricately and thoroughly German and other second-rank languages are tied up with a great number of societies and how these statistics support or weaken the languages’ functions and maintenance.

Book excerpt: Whereas the cultural and political influence of the U.S. on Europe and Germany has been researched extensively, the impact of more than 6 million German immigrants on U.S.-American history and culture has received far less scholarly attention. Therefore this volume addresses a wide range of areas in which a German presence has been manifesting itself in the U.S. for more than three centuries. Among the disciplines involved in this broad analysis are linguistics, literary studies, history, economics, musicology as well as media studies and cultural studies.

Book Synopsis Changes Between the Lines by : Doris Stolberg
Download or read book Changes Between the Lines written by Doris Stolberg and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book investigates the diachronic dimension of contact-induced language change based on empirical data from Pennsylvania German (PG), a variety of German in long-term contact with English. Written data published in local print media from Pennsylvania (USA) between 1868 and 1992 are analyzed with respect to semantic changes in the argument structure of verbs, the use of impersonal constructions, word order changes in subordinate clauses and in prepositional phrase constructions. The research objective is to trace language change based on diachronic empirical data, and to assess whether existing models of language contact make provisions to cover the long-term developments found in PG. The focus of the study is thus twofold: first, it provides a detailed analysis of selected semantic and syntactic changes in Pennsylvania German, and second, it links the empirical findings to theoretical approaches to language contact. Previous investigations of PG have drawn a more or less static, rather than dynamic, picture of this contact variety. The present study explores how the dynamics of language contact can bring about language mixing, borrowing, and, eventually, language change, taking into account psycholinguistic processes in (the head of) the bilingual speaker.
Book Synopsis Manual of Brazilian Portuguese Linguistics by : Johannes Kabatek
Download or read book Manual of Brazilian Portuguese Linguistics written by Johannes Kabatek and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is the first comprehensive account of Brazilian Portuguese linguistics written in English, offering not only linguists but also historians and social scientists new insights gained from the intensive research carried out over the last decades on the linguistic reality of this vast territory. In the 20 overview chapters, internationally renowned experts give detailed yet concise information on a wide range of language-internal as well as external synchronic and diachronic topics. Most of this information is the fruit of large-scale language documentation and description projects, such as the project on the linguistic norm of educated speakers (NURC), the project “Grammar of spoken Portuguese”, and the project “Towards a History of Brazilian Portuguese” (PHPB), among others. Further chapters of high contemporary interest and relevance include the study of linguistic policies and psycholinguistics. The manual offers theoretical insights of general interest, not least since many chapters present the linguistic data in the light of a combination of formal, functional, generative and sociolinguistic approaches. This rather unique feature of the volume is achieved by the double authorship of some of the relevant chapters, thus bringing together and synthesizing different perspectives.

It includes historical studies (colonial German in contrast with Native American languages, the language of Pietism among colonial immigrants), dialect descriptions (Donau-schwäbisch in the Midwest, Low German in Kansas, Volga German in Kansas) and investigations into the impact of German on English (German ethnic varieties of English, German in advertising, German loanwords in American English). Research on language maintenance and shift is especially well-represented, with a general theoretical contribution and case studies of Alberta, Black Sea Germans in the Dakotas, and the Amana colonies. Methodological and theoretical issues include case loss and morphosyntactic change (East Franconian in Indiana), a comparative study of German in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, as well as several papers on Pennsylvania German, treating linguistic convergence, language attitudes, and sociolingusitic variation.

This book is a tribute to his versatile, energetically continuous work. At the same time, it is a collection of current texts in which Tefner's well-known students, colleagues and members of the international scientific community deal with historically and socially significant themes, such as the construction of the European territorial order, border policy and contractual civilization, the importance of jurisprudence in the search for the civilizing process, welfare economics, a systematic conception of human being, and Hungary's critical decades in the 19th and 20th centuries. The historical and geographical arc of the texts extends from the Carolingian Empire of the 8th century to the European Union of the 2020s. A szövegek történelmi és földrajzi íve a 8. századi Karoling Birodalomtól a 2020-as évek Európai Úniójáig terjed.
