Die Aneignung der Sprache ist grundlegend für den Schulerfolg und damit bestimmend für die zukünftige Lebensgestaltung in der Gesellschaft. Der Schul(miss-)erfolg von SuS mit Migrationshintergrund wird von PISA und IGLU gezeigt, ebenso wie der Umstand, dass die SuS mit Migrationshintergrund im deutschen Bildungssystem effektiver gefördert werden sollten, um bessere Erfolge zu erzielen. Dass Migrantenkinder und – jugendliche überproportional häufig Hauptschulen besuchen, sowie keinen Schulabschluss erreichen, ist damit zu erklären, dass der Bildungserfolg nicht nur von der sozialen Herkunft abhängig ist und ein beträchtlicher Prozentsatz der SuS mit Migrationshintergrund aus niedrigen sozio-ökonomischen Status vertreten sind, sondern auch von ihrer unzureichenden zweitsprachlichen Kompetenz. Seit Beginn der 1970er Jahre hat sich die Zweitspracherwerbsforschung als wissenschaftliche Disziplin entwickelt, wird in Bildungseinrichtungen, wie etwa in Schulen – wo bisher Sprachproduktionen von SuS mit Migrationshintergrund, die nicht der standardsprachlichen Norm entsprechen, als falsch bzw. fehlerhaft gewertet wurde – eine andere Sichtweise eingenommen. Demnach versucht die Zweitspracherwerbsforschung, die Prinzipien und Mechanismen nachvollzuziehen, welche den Zweitspracherwerb sowie die ihn kennzeichnenden Strukturen bestimmen. Im Folgenden soll zunächst auf die Definitionen zum Erst-, Zweit- und Fremdspracherwerb eingegangen werden, damit beim Gebrauch der terminologischen Begriffe die differenzierenden Besonderheiten verdeutlicht werden. Anschließend sollen die Einflussfaktoren des Zweitspracherwerbs dargestellt werden. Hierbei werden die Faktoren „Erwerbskontext“ und das „Alter“ ausführlich diskutiert.

Abstract: Whereas the use of most punctuation marks is thought to be governed by grammatical rules, some punctuation marks can be used in a more expressive way that rather reflects emotions and/or attitudes of the writer instead of grammatical properties. In this paper, we will discuss the distinction between grammatical and expressive punctuation and suggest that pragmatic punctuation marks exhibit certain features that the more grammatical punctuation marks do not: They are expressive, they can occur rather freely inside a sentence, they can be repeated to intensify their effect, and they can be combined with other expressive punctuation. A comparison of commas and exclamation points illustrates the difference between grammatical and pragmatic punctuation marks. We will investigate the most common punctuation marks with respect to these properties and assign them a place in what may be called the grammar-pragmatics continuum of punctuation. We will conclude with a comparison between expressive punctuation and emojis which can be used to fulfill similar roles and present a case study of the combination "!?!". – Vera Lee-Schoenfeld, Gabriele Diewald & Maud Kelly: German double-accusative verbs: different solutions for avoiding a marked construction. Abstract: Extending Lee-Schoenfeld & Diewald's (2017) corpus investigation and formal analysis of 'lehren' ('teach') to the other four German double-accusative verbs, 'abfragen', 'abhören' (both meaning 'quiz/test'), 'kosten' ('cost'), and 'fragen' ('ask'), we show that each verb follows its own individual path to overriding the highly marked ACC > ACC pattern, with the latest usage data revealing notably different results as to the verbs' most typical syntactic patterns, meaning variants, and contextual features. Specifically, we propose that this small group of verbs makes use of three different "strategies" for avoiding the ACC > ACC pattern: (i) change of major valency frame from a ditransitive to a monotransitive pattern ('abhören' and 'abfragen'), (ii) limiting the second object to primarily a clausal or prepositional one ('fragen'), and (iii) semantic diversification / polysemy combined with different preferences as to the valency pattern per meaning ('kosten'). We back up these claims by comparing the usage patterns of the verbs in four time periods between 1800 and 2010 via corpus analyses using DWDS (Digitales Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache, https://www.dwds.de/). We also present the results of a synchronic search using the German web corpus deTenTen. – Aline Meili: The influence of sign language on writing: on cross-modal transfer in texts by DHH learners. Abstract: Literacy is an important competence not only in a scholarly setting, but also for actively taking part in a literate society. For deaf users of a sign language, however, the 'written word' is challenging for the following two reasons. First, signers of a face-to-face, unwritten visual language need to transfer their message into a written modality. Second, as there is no widely accepted standardized written form for signed languages, the code which they must use is that of the written representation of an oral language, which is often a second language (L2) to users of a sign language. The study reported here addresses these challenges with written German data collected from Swiss German Sign Language (DSGS) deaf signers. The variations found in these written German texts are the result not only of second language acquisition processes common to both hearing and deaf L2 learners of German, but also of cross-modal (visual/spatial – acoustic/oral) interferences unique to deaf L2 learners of the oral language.

Besides that, we are still lacking any cognitively well-grounded theory about the special features of contexts in which the focus is on content learning, but in which a foreign language is used as the medium of communicating information. This book re-examines the basis for CLIL from a cognitive perspective and investigates how the use of a foreign language as a working language influences the processing of content. It summarizes findings from cognitive psychology on thinking, problem solving and conceptual processing, and integrates them with models of language-specific mental activities such as speech processing and text composition. This provides a theoretically well-grounded basis for the understanding of the special features of CLIL, and promotes a Cognitive Linguistic perspective on CLIL pedagogy. The theoretical considerations form the basis for an empirical study that offers the first insights into what CLIL learners actually do when they solve content-focused tasks while using an L2. Through spontaneous verbalization of thought, detailed verbal protocols were elicited and analysed into language and content focused cognitive processes. The analysis shows that both language and conceptual thought interact closely and that a focus on language in general has positive effects on the processing of semantic content; the use of an L2 as working language can enhance this effect. Additionally, the study offers a thorough reflection and new perspectives on verbal protocols as research tools, in particular in L2 contexts.

This alleged numerical imbalance between monolinguals and bilinguals may be expected to become larger due to increasing international travel through, for instance, tourism and trade, to the growing use of international communication networks, and to the fact that in some parts of the world (i.e., Europe), the borders between countries are effectively disappearing. In addition to the growing awareness that bilinguals are very common and may even outnumber monolinguals, there is the dawning understanding that the bilingual mind is not simply the sum of the cognitive processes associated with each of the two monolingual modes, and that the two languages of bilingual may interact with one another in complicated ways. To gain a genuinely universal account of human cognition will therefore require a detailed understanding of language use by both pure monolinguals as well as bilinguals, unbalanced and balanced, and of the representations and processes involved. These two insights, that bilingualism is a common human condition and that it may influence cognition, were presumably instrumental in putting bilingualism on the agendas of many researchers of cognition and language in recent years. But other reasons may have played a role too: The study of bilingualism also provides a unique opportunity to study the relation between language and thought. A final reason for the growing interest in this area of research is the awareness that bilingualism may confer the benefit of broadening one's scope beyond the limits of one's own country and culture. This book serves as an excellent introduction to the important topics in the psycholinguistic study of bilingualism. The chapters represent a comprehensive and interrelated set of topics that form the core of contemporary research on the psycholinguistics of bilingualism. Parameterization of functional categories may, however, be understood in different ways, even if one shares the dual assumptions that substantive elements (verbs, nouns, etc. ) are present in all grammars and that X-bar principles are part of the grammatical knowledge available to the child prior to language-specific learning processes. From these assumptions it follows that the child should, from early on, be able to construct projections on the basis of these elements. The role of functional categories, however, may still be interpreted differently. One possibility, first suggested by Radford (1986, 1990) and by Guilfoyle and Noonan (1988), is that children must discover which functional categories (FC) need to be implemented in the grammar of the language they are acquiring. Another possibility, first explored by Hyams (1986), is that a specific category is present in developing grammars but that parameter values are set in a way deviating from the target adult grammar, corresponding, however, to options realized in other adult systems. A third option would be that these categories might be specified differently in developing as opposed to mature grammars. All three are explored in the papers collected in this volume.
