Download or read book Deterministic and Stochastic Scheduling written by M.A. Dempster and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of an Advanced Study and Re search Institute on Theoretical Approaches to Scheduling Problems. The Institute was held in Durham, England, from July 6 to July 17, 1981. It was attended by 91 participants from fifteen different countries. The format of the Institute was somewhat unusual. The first eight of the ten available days were devoted to an Advanced Study Insti tute, with lectures on the state of the art with respect to deter ministic and stochastic scheduling models and on the interface between these two approaches. The last two days were occupied by an Advanced Research Institute, where recent results and promising directions for future research, especially in the interface area, were discussed. Altogether, 37 lectures were delivered by 24 lecturers. They have all contributed to these proceedings, the first part of which deals with the Advanced Study Institute and the second part of which covers the Advanced Research Institute. Each part is preceded by an introduction, written by the editors. While confessing to a natural bias as organizers, we believe that the Institute has been a rewarding and enjoyable event for everyone concerned. We are very grateful to all those who have contributed to its realization.
Book Synopsis Stochastic Modeling of Manufacturing Systems by : George Liberopoulos
Download or read book Stochastic Modeling of Manufacturing Systems written by George Liberopoulos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-12 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing systems rarely perform exactly as expected and predicted. Unexpected events, such as order changes, equipment failures and product defects, affect the performance of the system and complicate decision-making. This volume is devoted to the development of analytical methods aiming at responding to variability in a way that limits its corrupting effects on system performance. The book includes fifteen novel chapters that mostly focus on the development and analysis of performance evaluation models of manufacturing systems using decomposition-based methods, Markovian and queuing analysis, simulation, and inventory control approaches. They are organized into four distinct sections to reflect their shared viewpoints: factory design, unreliable production lines, queuing network models, production planning and assembly.
Book Synopsis Deterministic Lotsizing Models for Production Planning by : Marc Salomon
Download or read book Deterministic Lotsizing Models for Production Planning written by Marc Salomon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with timing and sizing decisions for production lots, and more precisely, with mathematical models to support optimal tim ing and sizing decisions. These models are called lotsizing models. They are characterized by the fact that production lots are determined based on a trade-offbetween production costs and customer service. Production costs can be categorized as basic production costs, which consist of material costs, labour costs, machine startup costs and over head costs, and inventory related costs, which include costs of capital tied up in inventory, insurances and taxes. Customer service is the capability of the firm to deliver to their clients the products in the quantity they ordered at the agreed upon time and place. The costs of realizing a certain service level are usuaIly very dif ficult to convert into money. They include costs of expediting, loss of customer goodwill, and loss of sales revenues resulting from the short age situation.
Download or read book Inventory Control written by Sven Axsäter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modem information technology has created new possibilities for more sophisticated and efficient control of supply chains. Most organizations can reduce their material flow costs substantially. Inventory control techniques are very important components in this development process. A thorough understanding of relevant inventory models is a prerequisite for successful implementation. I hope that this book will be a useful tool in acquiring such an understanding. Nearly ten years ago I wrote a Swedish book on inventory control. This previous book has been used in courses in production and inventory control at several Swed ish engineering schools and has also been appreciated by many practitioners in the field. Positive reactions from many readers have occasionally made me contemplate writing a new book in English on the same subject. Encouraging support of this idea from the Kluwer Editors Fred Hillier and Gary Folven finally convinced me to go ahead with the project. The result is this new book, which in many ways differs from its Swedish prede cessor. Some differences are due to recent developments in inventory control. Fur thermore, this new book is in a sense more theoretical. In particular, it is to a larger extent focused on creating a good basic understanding of different possible ap proaches when analyzing inventory models.

Book Synopsis Multi-Agent Based Beam Search for Real-Time Production Scheduling and Control by : Shu Gang Kang
Download or read book Multi-Agent Based Beam Search for Real-Time Production Scheduling and Control written by Shu Gang Kang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Multi-Agent Based Beam Search (MABBS) method systematically integrates four major requirements of manufacturing production - representation capability, solution quality, computation efficiency, and implementation difficulty - within a unified framework to deal with the many challenges of complex real-world production planning and scheduling problems. Multi-agent Based Beam Search for Real-time Production Scheduling and Control introduces this method, together with its software implementation and industrial applications. This book connects academic research with industrial practice, and develops a practical solution to production planning and scheduling problems. To simplify implementation, a reusable software platform is developed to build the MABBS method into a generic computation engine. This engine is integrated with a script language, called the Embedded Extensible Application Script Language (EXASL), to provide a flexible and straightforward approach to representing complex real-world problems. Adopting an in-depth yet engaging and clear approach, and avoiding confusing or complicated mathematics and formulas, this book presents simple heuristics and a user-friendly software platform for system modelling. The supporting industrial case studies provide key information for students, lecturers, and industry practitioners alike. Multi-agent Based Beam Search for Real-time Production Scheduling and Control offers insights into the complex nature of and a practical total solution to production planning and scheduling, and inspires further research and practice in this promising research area.

Book Synopsis Lot-Sizing and Scheduling for Flexible Flow Lines by : Daniel Quadt
Download or read book Lot-Sizing and Scheduling for Flexible Flow Lines written by Daniel Quadt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-08-18 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book considers the lot-sizing and scheduling problem for flexible flow line production facilities. Flexible flow lines are flow lines with parallel machines on some or all production stages. They can be found in a vast number of industries. A three-phased solution approach is presented that solves the integrated lot-sizing and scheduling problem in a hierarchical manner. The approach is able to handle several important features relevant in industrial practice, such as back-orders and setup carry-over. The developed solution procedures solve practically sized problems in a relatively short amount of time. One of the procedures is based on a novel mixed integer programming (MIP) model, which employs integer variables instead of binary variables. This makes it possible to find (near-)optimal solutions using standard algorithms such as CPLEX. Another procedure uses two nested Genetic Algorithms. An application of the framework in the semiconductor industry is given.

Book Synopsis Supply Planning for Processors of Agricultural Raw Materials by : Susanne Wiedenmann
Download or read book Supply Planning for Processors of Agricultural Raw Materials written by Susanne Wiedenmann and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renewable resources are rapidly gaining importance as alternative raw materials for industrial production. Supply planning with agricultural raw materials poses several challenges to processors. These challenges include seasonal availability, uncertain harvest quality and quantity as well as uncertain commodity market prices. In this work, decision support based on stochastic programming is developed to optimize supply planning of processors of agricultural raw materials given industrial requirements for material use. The approach depicts uncertain parameter values with probability distributions and maximizes the expected profit. Two examples are used to illustrate possible applications: supply planning for a processor of linseed and for a seed company. As stochastic programs can be adapted quickly, this approach can be applied to other supply planning decisions in bio-based supply chains.

Download or read book Integer Programming and Related Areas written by Rabe v. Randow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fields of integer programming and combinatorial optimization continue to be areas of great vitality, with an ever increasing number of publications and journals appearing. A classified bibliography thus continues to be necessary and useful today, even more so than it did when the project, of which this is the fifth volume, was started in 1970 in the Institut fur Okonometrie und Operations Research of the University of Bonn. The pioneering first volume was compiled by Claus Kastning during the years 1970 - 1975 and appeared in 1976 as Volume 128 of the series Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems published by the Springer Verlag. Work on the project was continued by Dirk Hausmann, Reinhardt Euler, and Rabe von Randow, and resulted in the publication of the second, third, and fourth volumes in 1978, 1982, and 1985 (Volumes 160, 197, and 243 of the above series). The present book constitutes the fifth volume of the bibliography and covers the period from autumn 1984 to the end of 1987. It contains 5864 new publications by 4480 authors and was compiled by Rabe von Randow. Its form is practically identical to that of the first four volumes, some additions having been made to the subject list.
