Book excerpt: Management decisions in corn (Zea mays mays L) production are usually based on specific growth stages. However, because of climate and weather variability, phenological stages vary from season to season across geographic locations. This variability in growth and phenology entails risks and quantifying it will help in managing climate related risks. Crop simulation models can play a significant role in minimizing these risks through designing management strategies; however, they are not always accurate. Remote sensing observations and climate predictions can improve the accuracy in managing time bound climate-sensitive decisions at larger spatiotemporal scale. However, there is also a disconnect between climate forecasts and crop models. The unavailability of downscaling tool that can downscale rainfall and temperature forecasts simultaneously make this task more challenging. To address these knowledge gaps, this dissertation consists of three studies focused on interdisciplinary approaches to agronomic management of corn.In the first study, we calibrated and validated genetic coefficients of CERES-Maize using field data from the Michigan corn performance trials. Multiple methods of estimating genetic coefficients GENCALC (Genotype Coefficient Calculator), GLUE (Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimate), and NMCGA (Noisy Monte Carlo Genetic Algorithm) were evaluated and ensembled to estimate more reliable genetic coefficients. The calibrations were done under irrigated conditions and validation under rainfed conditions. The results suggested that ensembled genetic coefficients performed best among all, with d-index of 0.94 and 0.96 in calibration and validation for anthesis and maturity dates, and yield. In the second study, simulated growth stages from the calibrated crop model were used to develop site-specific crop coefficients (kc) using ensembled ET and reference ET from the nearest weather station. ET from multiple models were ensembled and validated with the measured ET from eddy-covariance flux towers for 2010 - 2017. Results suggest that the ensembled ET performed best among all ET models used, with highest d-index of 0.94. Likewise, the performance of the newly derived kc-curve was compared with FAO-kc curve using a soil water balance model. Then, the derived region-specific Kc-curve was used to design irrigation scheduling and results suggest that it performed better than FAO Kc-curve in minimizing the amount irrigation while maintaining a prescribed allowable water stress. The third study used the calibrated crop model to simulate anthesis using downscaled seasonal climate forecasts. The predicted anthesis and downscaled seasonal climate forecasts were used to develop risk analysis model for ear rot disease management in corn. In this study an innovative downscaling tool, called FResamplerPT, was introduced to downscale rainfall and temperature simultaneously. The results suggest that temperature and relative humidity are better predictors (combined) as compared to temperature and rainfall (combined). With this risk analysis model, growers can evaluate and assess the future climatic conditions in the season before planting the crops. The seasonal climate information with the lead-time of 3 months can help growers to prepare integrated management strategies for ear rot disease management in maize.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The effect of planting date on yield was studied in Parana State, Brazil where five tropical hybrids of maize were planted at 14 planting dates over three growing seasons at five locations. Soil water holding characteristics and meteorological variables were measured at each location. The water release curve for each soil was determined, using a power function. Corn heat units were calculated and used to measure the phenological development of each hybrid. This information, along with meteorological data, was used in a mathematical model to simulate plant growth over each growing period. Meteorological data from 1976 to 1986 were employed to simulate yield data for 14 planting dates during each growing season at four locations for each hybrid. The average production curve for the 10 growing seasons was compared to the curve observed for the 1986/87 growing season for three of the five hybrids. Thermal requirements appeared as an efficient tool to predict corn developmental stages, and the power function fit satisfactorily the observed soil data. The predicted curve, representing a 10-year average, showed that the designed model accounted for the major cultural and environmental factors that affect yield at each location, being sensitive enough to detect differences among genotypes. Comparisons between predicted and observed curves showed that they had the same shape." --

Book excerpt: A temperature function (FT) was developed to predict corn (Zea mays L.) silking date, based on soil maximum and minimum temperature at 10 cm from planting until E FT = 12 and then air temperature. Silking date was established as the date when E FT = 37. The data used were obtained from an agrometeorological study of corn growth and developement at the Purdue Agronomy Farm, West Lafayette, Indiana 1969-1974, and from the literature. The Energy-Crop Growth (ECG) variable, previously described by Dale Hodges, was modified to include the effect of temperature upon corn growth. The period for the accumulation of ECG was also changed from a fixed 84-day period centered at silking to one extending from E FT = 12 to 50 days after E FT = 37, the silking date. The period from silking to grain maturity was not studied. Daily average dry matter increase (^dm) was related to daily ECG bu linear regression technique, using 1972-1974 records. Since the effect of a unit ECG on growth may depend on the crop ontogeny, the interaction between ECG and the stage of development of corn, identified by E FT from planting, was also considered. The change in the relation of ^DM to ECG, however, may not be linear as considered by the interaction term. To identify when such changes occur, the period from E FT = 12 to FT = 37 was divided into four segments of E FT and regression were fitted to each of the four data subsets. The range in ^DM was too small within the E FT classes for stable estimates of the regression coefficients. (...).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of the weather on corn yields was studied through the analysis of thirty years of yield variation in Minas Gerais, Brasil. The first approach to the problem was made using Thompson's Multiple Regression Model. In this model monthly rainfall and temperature during the summer, the interaction between these variables, and the preseason rainfall are the variables included. The model showed and association of 61 percent of the yield variation. Palmer's Droughy Analysis indicated a straight relationship between drought intensity and duration, and yield variation. The moisture departure during the grouwing season, a variable realting the demand and supply of water to the corn plant, showed a coefficient of determination between 33 to 40 percent when correlated with yields, but because of its continous and persisten nature its use becomes more difficult.
