The summary is based largely on a recent survey of appropriate aerospace concerns and government installations. Responses to the survey indicate that the present state-of-the-art does not allow an accurate general analytical solution to the problem except under the most idealized situations. Testing of the specific aircraft/store combination is therefore recommended unless the combination closely matches a previously tested combination for which data are available. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program for calculating airborne store loads, shears, and moments is described. Three hanger configurations can be treated: two lugs and four sway braces; a statically determinate two-hanger rail-launch; two T-lugs with no sway braces. The program automatically calculates lug and sway brace reactions. Shear and moment distributions are plotted and tabulated for the vertical, lateral, and resultant loads. Expanded capabilities of this program also permit determination of the effect of varying cant orientation angles of the store with the same bomb rack geometry. A new feature is a quick-look calculation using a standard set of load factors from the captive flight, catapult takeoff, and arrested landing load factor curves. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design loads computations for airborne stores is such a recurrent need that it became worthwhile to program the tedious task for digital computers. Two hanger configurations are treated: (1) the two-lug, four-sway-brace bomb rack common to U.S. stores, and (2) a statically determinate configuration often used for rail-launched missiles. Procedures recommended by MIL-A-8591 are used where applicable. Component hanger loads for stores subjected to arbitrary load conditions in captive flight are printed, and shear-moment distributions are plotted. (Author).

Book excerpt: Tests were conducted on a four-finned, ogive-cylinder store model which was mounted on the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility (VKF) Captive Trajectory System (CTS) in the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) Supersonic Wind Tunnel A. The purpose of these tests was to provide information necessary for an independent check on the VKF CTS trajectory mode results. Grid and trajectory data were obtained for the store, both in the free stream and in the interference flow field of a generalized parent-aircraft model. The Mach number was 1.63, with Reynolds numbers per foot of 5.0 and 3.8 million. Grid data from these tests were used in conjunction with the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory (AFFDL) Six-Degree-of-Freedom Computer Program (SDFCP) to simulate the trajectories obtained by the VKF CTS. These SDFCP simulations compared favorably with the CTS trajectories, providing an important compared favorably with the CTS trajectories, providing an important independent verification of the VKF CTS trajectory mode results. This report documents this validation effort and provides a general description of the VKF CTS as well as guidelines for potential users of this system. (Author).

Book excerpt: A wind tunnel test was conducted using 0.05-scale models to study the separation characteristics of the SUU-51/B external store with modified tail fins from the F-4C aircraft. Captive-trajectory store-separation data were obtained for two store cg locations and for 10 store wing loading configurations. The separation trajectories were initiated from the right-wing inboard pylon station utilizing the Triple Ejection Rack and from the centerline pylon utilizing the Multiple Ejection Rack. The flight conditions simulated were Mach numbers from 0.66 to 0.90 at an altitude of 5000 ft. Parent aircraft dive angles of 0 and 45 deg were simulated. (author).

Book excerpt: Tests were conducted in the Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel (4T) using 0.05-scale models to investigate the separation characteristics of the unfinned and finned BLU-IC/B, M-11GP, MK-82GP, and MK-82SE when released from various wing pylon locations on the A-7D aircraft. Captive trajectory data were obtained at Mach numbers from 0.34 to 0.95 at simulated pressure altitudes from 5000 to 7000 ft. The parent aircraft angle of attack was varied from 1.8 to 12.3, depending on Mach number, climb angle, and simulated altitude. At selected test conditions, parent climb angles of 0, -35, -50, and -70 deg were simulated. In some cases, the separation trajectories of the BLU-1C/B were initiated at the end of the ejector piston stroke using flight-test data to determine the initial store positions and velocities. In general, the separation trajectories agreed well with flight-test data for the trajectory interval of the test. For the trajectory intervals of the test, most of the stores separated from the parent aircraft without store-to-parent contact. (Author).

This book was released on 1976 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains the results of an experimental program to evaluate the effect of the 4T Captive Trajectory System on the separation characteristics of typical stores. The models selected as being generally representative of external stores were the modified BLU-27B/B configuration with and without fins. The aircraft model selected for this test was the F-111. To assess the aerodynamic interference of the Captive Trajectory System on the store and its trajectory, four sting lengths were used to position the store model at varying distances from the support system. Data were obtained at Mach numbers of 0.4, 0.8, 0.9, 1.1, and 1.2. Captive trajectories simulating store separation from the aircraft model were obtained; forces on the store were measured while the store was moved vertically away from the marriage position; and force data on the store were obtained as it was yawed in a location as far removed as possible from the aircraft model. It was concluded that the Captive Trajectory System has little or no effect on the store loads and trajectory development. (Author).
