Book excerpt: Measurement of the absolute permeability to gas, porosity, and effective and relative permeability to gas of the Pittsburgh bituminous coal and the Hanna, Wyoming subbituminous coal has been extended. The same measurements have been made on several samples from the Gillette, Wyoming subbituminous coal. Shrinkage of both coals with drying was also measured. The gas relative permeability curves of the coals are compared and the difference is striking. The rate of increase in permeability to gas past the critical gas saturation is significantly greater as the rank of the coal decreases. Similarly values of absolute permeability, shrinkage, and porosity are inverse functions of rank. The critical gas saturation does not appear to be a function of rank.
Book Synopsis Multiscale Experiments and Multifractal Analysis of Bituminous Coals: Dominant Pore Properties for Gas Permeability by : Bo Zhang

This book was released on 2019 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pore characteristics of coal are highly correlated with gas permeability. In this study, multifractal analysis based on mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) was used to investigate the pore spatial distributions and heterogeneity of pore size distributions (PSDs) of three sister coal samples collected from the Xin Zhouyao mine in China. The mercury intrusion data, under pressures of over 10MPa, were corrected in combination with the gas adsorption results. All CT images were processed by using the Image-Pro Plus (IPP) software (Media Cybernetics, Inc., Rockville, MD) The pore volume percentage information obtained from the MIP was found to be coincident with the 3D reconstructions. Seepage experiments were also carried out under different gas pressures to analyze the effect of the pore parameters on permeability. The results from these experiments showed that for the three coal samples, the degree of clustering of the pores is the dominant factor for permeability and should be the first factor considered. Variations of?(q, ?) versus?indicated that the PSDs of coals have multifractal behavior. Multifractal analysis was suggested by the extracted parameters from the PSDs, including the capacity dimensionD0, the information dimensionD1, the correlation dimensionD2, the widths of the right sideD0D10, and of the left sideD10D0ofDqspectra, and the widths of left side?0?q+and right side?0?qof thef(?) spectrum. These parameters were further discussed to evaluate the permeability.

Quarterly Report, June--August 1977 written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas-phase permeabilities of five samples from the Hanna IV site were measured as functions of water saturation. These samples were cut from a core which was obtained in-situ at a subsurface depth of approximately 335 feet. In addition effective permeabilities to water were measured over an increasing water saturation cycle for three Hanna and two Pittsburgh coals obtained from surface mines. Absolute permeabilities to gas as a function of overburden pressure were measured for one additional Hanna surface sample. Preliminary results of carbon dioxide flows through the three coals are briefly discussed.

Book Synopsis DNAPL Site Evaluation by : James W. Mercer
Download or read book DNAPL Site Evaluation written by James W. Mercer and published by CRC-Press. This book was released on 1993-04-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DNAPL Site Evaluation covers long-term contamination of ground water by DNAPL (dense non-aqueous phase liquids) chemicals. The book develops a framework for planning and implementing DNAPL site characterization activities. It provides detailed methods to identify, characterize, and monitor sites and analyzes their utility, limitations, risks, availability, and cost. Methods to interpret contaminant fate and transport are identified, and new site characterization methods are assessed. DNAPL Site Evaluation will maximize the cost-effectiveness of site investigation/remediation by providing the best information available to describe and evaluate methods to be used for determining the presence, fate, and transport of subsurface DNAPL contamination. The book will be a useful reference for groundwater professionals and environmental regulatory personnel.
Book Synopsis Biochar for Environmental Management by : Dr. Johannes Lehmann
Download or read book Biochar for Environmental Management written by Dr. Johannes Lehmann and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2009 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Biochar is the carbon-rich product when biomass (such as wood, manure, or crop residues) is heated in a closed container with little or no available air. It can be used to improve agriculture and the environment in several ways, and its stability in soil and superior nutrient-retention properties make it an ideal soil amendment to increase crop yields. In addition to this, biochar sequestration, in combination with sustainable biomass production, can be carbon-negative and therefore used to actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, with major implications for mitigation of climate change. Biochar production can also be combined with bioenergy production through the use of the gases that are given off in the pyrolysis process. This book is the first to synthesize the expanding research literature on this topic. The book's interdisciplinary approach, which covers engineering, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, economics and policy, is a vital tool at this stage of biochar technology development. This comprehensive overview of current knowledge will be of interest to advanced students, researchers and professionals in a wide range of disciplines"--Provided by publisher.
