Book excerpt: This handbook provides an overview of the research on the changing nature of work and workers by marshalling interdisciplinary research to summarize the empirical evidence and provide documentation of what has actually changed. Connections are explored between the changing nature of work and macro-level trends in technological change, income inequality, global labor markets, labor unions, organizational forms, and skill polarization, among others. This edited volume also reviews evidence for changes in workers, including generational change (or lack thereof), that has accumulated across domains. Based on documented changes in work and worker behavior, the handbook derives implications for a range of management functions, such as selection, performance management, leadership, workplace ethics, and employee well-being. This evaluation of the extent of changes and their impact gives guidance on what best practices should be put in place to harness these developments to achieve success.

Book excerpt: Effective leadership is well thought-out to be a fundamental factor in the achievement of an organization. Organizational Citizenship Behavior is considered to be a discretionary behavior, which do not form a part of job description and it is performed by employees on their own choice and Organizational Fairness is an idea that action or decisions are morally right, which may be defined according to the ethics, religion, fairness, equity, or law. The main objective of the study was to find out the impact of leadership behavior on Organizational Citizenship Behavior and to extract the major determinants leading to organizational fairness. The data was gathered through a well structured questionnaire and non parametric tests were used to test the significance of the results. Exploratory factor analysis was used to extract the factors relating to the organizational fairness. It was found that the employees exhibited a decent citizenship behavior and perceived positively towards organizational fairness. Further it was found that the leadership behavior had a significant impact on the organization citizenship behavior in some respects and did not have an impact on the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook explores the theme of managing inside China and consists of chapters that communicate the major managerial concepts within the context of Mainland China. Its key emphasis is to clearly highlight the differences in the art of managing in China vs. the West, while acknowledging that these differences may be narrowing as a result of globalization. Chapters in the book elaborate on how management is affected as China experiences rapid change while some aspects of Chinese culture remain unchanged and steeped in tradition. The book goes further in exploring this complexity by juxtaposing China’s orientation towards interpersonal relations, or "guanxi", with the government’s emphasis on law, which is now becoming more rule-based than before. Business & Management academics and practitioners will gain useful insight into Chinese management practices and their contrast to established Western ones when they use the Handbook of Chinese Management as a reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper examines the relationship between such behaviors as the leader's consideration and structuring and two key variables of the Contingency Model. The variables, the Least Preferred Coworker (LPC) score and the 'favorableness' of the leadership situation, interact in a highly consistent manner in affecting these leader behaviors. The evidence that leader behavior depends, in large part, on the interaction of LPC and situational favorableness indicates that we should avoid defining leadership style on the basis of leader behaviors, and that the prediction of leader behavior must be based on the joint effects of personality and situational factors. Book excerpt: The labor market is evolving very rapidly in recent years, in Europe and worldwide. The fast and deep changes brought a brand-new context of challenges and occupational risks to the attention of stakeholders. The current global financial crisis has increased the economic pressures on companies and they in turn have intensified the effects on employees, particularly in terms of new competition contexts and a lot of stress and mental health issues. Concurrently, social, political, and environmental problems generate under-employment, over-qualification, over-education, low wages for skilled workers, and unmet demand for education. Consequently, both high skilled and low skilled immigrant workers are increasing. In addition, workplaces are continually changing in step with the introduction of new technologies, materials, and work processes, together with the changes in the labor market, the new forms of employment, and the new work organizations. These changes lead to new opportunities for employees and employers – but also to new risks or re-actualization of old organizational risks. According to the EU-OSHA, the key points that describe the evolution that is currently ongoing in the world of work are globalization, the technical innovation, and the aging population. On one hand, some older potential risks are reappearing in organizations: intensive fear and worries, organizational anxiety, boredom, physical violence, alienation, segregation, loneliness, and isolation. On the other hand, re-emerging perceived organizational features seem vital for organizations and more important today than ever. Central constructs in the study of organizational behavior and organizational health such as perceived organizational support, commitment in organizational context, socialization processes, change capacity of organizations, perceived organizational justice, ergonomics, and motivation, nowadays seem increasingly important and renewed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the relationship between the person and the situation has had a long history in psychology. Many theories of personality are set on an interpersonal stage and many social phenomena are played out differently as the cast of characters change. At times the study of persons and situations has been contentious, however, recent interest in process models of personality and social interaction have focused on the ways people navigate, influence, and are influenced by their social worlds. Personality and Social Behavior contains a series of essays on topics where a transactional analysis of the person and situation has proved most fruitful. Contributions span the personality and social psychology spectrum and include such topics as new units in personality; neuroscience perspectives on interpersonal personality; social and interpersonal frameworks for understanding the self and self-esteem; and personality process analyses of romantic relationships, prejudice, health, and leadership. This volume provides essential reading for researchers with an interest in this core topic in social psychology and may also be used as a text on related upper-level courses.
