Because the models are contaminated by unknown levels of the CM at other near-IR wavelength, the residual is not simply the 3.5 Jim Cosmic IR Background, but a linear combination of the background levels at several wavelengths. In spite of this, the residual can be used to place limits on the near-IR CIB intensity if its spectral shape is assumed. Additionally, the residual level is shown to be more nearly isotropic than previous estimates over a much larger fraction of the sky. An excellent correlation of near-IR and far-IR ISM emission provides evidence of the high accuracy of the brighter stellar emission model. At optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths, the EBL is primarily stellar emission tracing back to the Epoch of Reionization (EOR) at redshifts z > 6 when the first luminous structures formed. Given the large uncertainties in our understanding of the EOR, measurements of the EBL provide an important probe of the galaxies that were responsible for reionization. Direct observations of the EBL are challenging due to contamination from bright local foregrounds. In recent years, intensity mapping has emerged as a successful technique in which EBL fluctuations are measured on large angular scales where the known foreground contributions are minimal or well-modeled. To isolate the signals from EOR structures, intensity mapping can be applied to optical and NIR data to probe rest-frame UV emission in galaxies at z > 6. Multiple intensity mapping studies including the first Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment (CIBER-1) have found that the optical/NIR EBL intensity and its large-scale fluctuations exceed predictions from galaxy models. At a party held in my home at the end of the Hilo conference, excitement was running high and everyone present was in favor of another meeting. I recall suggesting to Al Fowler that the next meeting could be in Tucson. Despite Al's reply to the effect that Hawaii was a much nicer location, a meeting was held in Tucson three years later. That meeting focussed more on the astrophysics which had been accomplished with the detectors, rather than on techniques and methods. However, it was already apparent in February of 1990 that a new generation of larger m arrays would soon supersede the 64x64 class of devices and so, having just moved from the UK Infrared Telescope unit in Hawaii to join with Eric Becklin in his move to UCLA, it seemed to me that another Hilo-style conference was appropriate, and Eric agreed.

Technically, we are also limited by the precision and accuracy of our instrumentation. In this thesis, I describe strategies to move observational astronomy forward in light of these limitations. Specifically, I present a method of stellar population analysis that is precise and accurate in the limit of low signal-to-noise with an emphasis on faint quasar host galaxy spectra. I present an investigation and test of a simple model of persistence in HgCdTe detector arrays aimed at the removal of this spurious signal from data. Finally, I present an overview of the Robert Stobie Spectrograph Near InfraRed (RSS-NIR) instrument's detector system that I have optimized for low read noise and background limited performance. The advancement of observational astronomy will always be limited by our ability to efficiently detect the signals we need. This thesis reviews the progress made to enhance ground-based astronomy capability.

Book excerpt: In the past few decades there has been growing realization that the Cepheid Near-Infrared (NIR) Period-Luminosity (PL) relation is superior to the Optical PL relation, however, there has been little to no new NIR data gathered on Galactic Cepheids despite the growing popularity and availability of NIR detectors. Galactic Cepheids are, in general, too bright to be observed by telescopes with apertures larger than 1-meter and most NIR detector arrays are too costly to justify placing on sub-1m class telescopes. I describe the development of a near-infrared (NIR) camera for the University of Wyoming's 0.6m telescope at Red Buttes Observatory. The camera, known as BIRCAM (Buttes InfraRed CAMera), was conceived to be a temporary, inexpensive test-bed instrument designed to test the electronic and cryo-mechanical components of another large-scale NIR imaging camera. BIRCAM was designed to make use of a CMOS HgCdTe Hawaii-2 detector array sensitive from 0.9-2.5 microns and during its relatively short lifetime I used BIRCAM to synoptically survey 130 fields containing Galactic Cepheids. These data will help provide the means to calibrate the NIR Cepheid Period-Luminosity Relation. The Cepheid Period-Luminosity (PL) Relation is fundamental to determining distances to nearby galaxies and as such is essential to calibrating the distance scale of the Universe. The accuracy and precision of the distance scale is determined in part by the accuracy and precision of the Galactic PL relation. Observations of Galactic Cepheids in the NIR play an important role in reducing systematic errors inherent to optical observations. The future calibration and refinement of the distance scale relies on providing accurate NIR photometry of Galactic Cepheid Variable Stars. Current photometric studies of Galactic Cepheids in the NIR are limited in size and homo-geneity. The goal of this project is to provide a homogenous photometric study that triples the number of well-sampled Galactic Cepheid light-curves. In conjunction with future astrometric data from GAIA and/or SIM these data will enable the accurate and precise calibration of the Galactic NIR Cepheid Period-Luminosity Relation. I have obtained the NIR light-curves for 131 Northern Galactic Cepheids. With these light-curves I have determined the mean intensity weighted NIR magnitudes and using a subset of 19 Galactic Cepheids with currently known distances and extinctions I have created a Galactic NIR PL relation. The NIR PL relation determined shows a dispersion of 0.13 mag and a slope which is indistinguishable from that of Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The scatter is as small as any survey to date and attests to the quality of the survey data and the potential of the full data set. I have used the Galactic NIR PL relation to determine a distance modulus of 18:49 ± 0:06 to the LMC, consistent with the generally accepted value. I also report on the serendipitous photometric discovery of 72 previously unclassified Galactic Variables. The individual data for each star are presented in the Supplemental Data document available upon request to the author.

These nebulae are often dusty, heated by radiation fields and by shocks. They are short-lived phenomena on the scale of a stellar lifetime, but their chemical compositions and internal kinematics may give important clues to advanced stages of stellar evolution. The material herein presented is based on lectures given at the University of Michigan, University of Queensland, University of California, Los Angeles, and in more abbreviated form at the Raman Institute, at the Scuola Internazionale di Trieste, and elsewhere. Much of it is derived origionally from the series "Physical Processes in Gaseous Nebulae" initiated at the Harvard College Observatory in the late 1930s. I have tried to emphasize the basic physics of the mechanisms involved and mention some of the uncertainties that underlie calculations of many basic parameters. Emphasis is placed on ionized plasmas with electron temperatures typically in the neighborhood of 10,OOOoK. Dust and other ingredients of the cold component of the interstellar medium are treated briefly from the point of view of their relation to hot plasmas of H II regions and planetaries. Chemical composition determinations for nebulae are discussed in some detail while the last section deals with interpretations of elemental abundances in the framework of stellar evolution and nucleogenesis. Gaseous nebulae offer some particularly engaging opportunities for studies of stellar evolution.
