Book excerpt: As a favor for a friend, a bright and talented young woman volunteered to read her poetry to a group of prisoners during a Black History Month program. It was an encounter that would alter her life forever, because it was there, in the prison, that she would meet Rashid, the man who was to become her friend, her confidant, her husband, her lover, her soul mate. At the time, Rashid was serving a sentence of twenty years to life for his part in a murder. The Prisoner's Wife is a testimony, for wives and mothers, friends and families. It's a tribute to anyone who has ever chosen, against the odds, to love.

Book excerpt: The Powerful, Poignant Story of Love, Courage, and Redemption from Death Row, Where an Indomitable Woman Challenged Corruption in Order to Free her Husband When TV reporter Jodie Sinclair went to the Louisiana State Penitentiary, also known as the Death House at Angola, in 1981, she expected to report about the death penalty and leave. She never expected to fall in love. Billy Sinclair was an inmate at Angola, sent there for an accidental murder during a robbery gone wrong. After facing a trial which was skewed against him and being sentenced to death, he saw first-hand the corruption and abuse rife in the criminal justice system, and he began an unrelenting crusade for reform. When the pair married by proxy a year after meeting, Jodie took up Billy’s fight. From then on, she lived with one foot in the outside world and one in the complex and dehumanizing bureaucracy of the prison world. This incredible memoir tracks her heroic twenty-five-year fight to save her husband from dying in prison, the professional setbacks she suffered for marrying a prisoner, and a pardons scandal in which she wore a wire for the FBI to help her husband expose corruption in the criminal justice system leading all the way to the governor's office, which put a target on Billy's back. It is the uplifting true story of a woman who stood by her man, and in doing so, exposed the horrors of our criminal justice system and became a voice for all those who have loved ones behind bars.

Book excerpt: The Prisoner's Wife is a political thriller ripped from today's headlines –a tense trip through the murky worlds of state– sponsored terrorism, nuclear politics, secret American jails and lawless rendition. Shawn Maguire, unemployed American spy, has been paid to find a young Iranian now being interrogated in one of the CIA's black prisons. The prisoner may be in Fes, in Cairo or in Peshawar, but Shawn has every confidence that he'll find his man. Based on his time as an agent, it's an assignment he knows he can handle. But he's not so sure he can handle... the prisoner's wife. Gerard Macdonald's The Prisoner's Wife takes a pulse-pounding look at the political intrigue in the Middle-East.

Book excerpt: Women at the Wall is the first ethnographic study of how the arrest, trial, imprisonment, and release of male criminals affects their families, particularly their wives. It relies on first-person accounts by prisoners' wives, providing details about the changing texture of their marital relationships and the accompanying stigmatization. From this book we learn about the effects of enforced spousal separation, and the control husbands maintain even during incarceration. We also learn that wives devise ingenious interpretations and explanations regarding their husbands' criminality, and how they attempt to establish stable, conventional lives for themselves while supporting their husbands through the various stages of the criminal justice system. These women reveal not only their hardships and losses, but also their resourcefulness in coping with their husbands' criminality, their families and friends, and the prison system itself.

Her marriage to Dean had failed, and they had divorced. He was incarcerated and serving a sixteen-year sentence. Through the years, she had tossed the letters in a box without reading them--letters about how he had found Christ, letters about how he learned what it meant to love, letters about wanting his family, letters about God's grace. She read through each letter, tears running down her face. She prayed, "Lord, if you want me to return to my marriage, you are going to have to give me love for my husband." She had endured rejection, infidelity, fear, and abandonment. Dean's choices had wounded her deeply. Only through God would she be able to forgive and love again. Dean still had several more years on his sentence. To return to her marriage would mean that she would become a prisoner's wife. Christ and the Prisoner's Wife is a life-changing story of God's power to save a husband, a marriage, and restore a family.

Being a prisoner's wife is one of those circumstances. No matter if your loved one was wrongly convicted or was sentenced because of a mistake that they have made in life, does not change the absolute terror that comes with a guilty verdict. When the guilty verdict comes out, not only does the court sentence that person to prison, but they sentence their closest loved ones as well. Hayley Worrell became a prisoner's wife in 2017 when her husband was wrongly convicted and sentenced to 12 years in The Arizona Department of Corrections. Through her experience, she has been able to pinpoint certain moments that have been the hardest to overcome and what she was able to do to move past them and make it through with her marriage still entact. Step inside the mind of a prisoner's wife and follow the raw journey and pain that comes with loving someone who is incarcerated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian Federation has one of the largest prison populations in the world. Women in particular are profoundly affected by the imprisonment of a family member. Families and Punishment in Russia details the experiences of these women-be they wives, mothers, girlfriends, daughters-who, as relatives of Russia's three-quarters of a million prisoners, are the "invisible victims" of the country's harsh penal policy. A pioneering work that offers a unique lens through which various aspects of life in twenty-first century Russia can be observed: the workings of criminal sub-cultures; societal attitudes to parenthood, marriage and marital fidelity; young women's quests for a husband; nostalgia for the Soviet period; state strategies towards dealing with political opponents; and the social construction of gender roles.

Drawing on over 70 interviews with regular visitors to Australia’s onshore immigration detention facilities, Peterie paints a unique and vivid picture of these carceral spaces. The book contrasts the care and friendship exchanged between detainees and visitors with the isolation and despair that is generated and weaponised through institutional life. It shows how visitors become targets of institutional control, and theorises the harm detention imposes beyond the detainee. As the first research in this area, this book bears important witness to Australia’s onshore immigration detention system, and offers internationally relevant insights on immigration, deterrence and the politics of solidarity.

Book excerpt: Little attention has been paid to the lives led by families of prisoners. Using a feminist approach, the author explores how the lives of 25 wives of prisoners at Soledad prison are affected by the incarceration of their husbands. Relationships, stigma, coping, finances, children, the prison system, and rehabilitation are explored through in-depth interviews. This study describes the experiences of the wives and seeks to connect their experiences to a conceptual framework that explores the context of sex, race, and class inequalities. The author discusses prison policy recommendations to improve the lot of prisoners' families, emphasizing the ways in which life is organized in families where the husband/father is imprisoned. Several themes emerge in this work. The powerful role of the wife, women as caretakers, and the subordinate position these women hold in society due to their sex, class, and race, are some examples. Recommendations are made to ease the burden of visiting, and encourage maintenance of family roles.
