Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a continuation of the first detailed mathematical analysis made on a detached-lever escapement timing device. The model studied was based on the T5E1 pin-lever escapement, designed primarily for ordnance applications. Although good quantitative results evolved from the original study, subsequent work suggested that the model was not capable of simulating certain characteristics of the detached-lever escapement. For example, this type escapement often had a torque sensitivity characteristic (frequency vs driving torque) that was concave upward. Further mathematical analysis has resulted in minor but apparently significant changes to the original model, indicating the feasibility of predicting the performance of an escapement more accurately. Book excerpt: The detached lever escapement has been in existence for two centuries, but analytical investigations have only recently been undertaken since watchmaking developed as an art rather than a science. This study considers the motions of the complete escapement and takes into account the impacts which occur between mating parts. A mathematical model has been formulated for the impact of two translating bodies by replacing the real deformable bodies with rigid bodies connected by a viscoelastic element. A method for determining the parameters of the viscoelastic element is given. A model is then developed for the rotational impact of two bodies, and this model is subsequently applied to a detached lever escapement mechanism.
