Book excerpt: Most people study astrology to discover more about themselves and to help others. In Destined for Murder, authors Sandra Harrisson Young and Edna Rowland use astrological charts and the case histories of some of the most vile killers in criminal history to discover whether astrology can indicate if someone is liable to become a serial killer. Destined for Murder examines the lives and morbid careers of some of the most infamous murderers in history, such as John Wayne Gacy, a generous businessman who volunteered his charitable services to the local Jaycees by day, and by night became a "killer clown" and pedophile who slaughtered thirty-three victims. Read about Ed Gein, who either murdered or robbed the graves of fifteen people. He was the model for the movie "Psycho." Learn the awful truth about Jeffrey Dahmer, who murdered seventeen boys and men, dismembering them in his grandmother's basement. The lives of several other murderers are revealed, followed by a precise astrological examination showing how their birth chart initially indicated problems and how secondary progressions and transits reveal the rest of the frightening story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary story of courage, forgiveness and reconciliation. Sabina Wolanski was just 12 years old when her home town in Poland was invaded by Nazis. In her diary, along with innocent adolescent longings, she recorded what happened next: the humiliations and terrors, the murder of her beloved family and the startling story of her own survival. Leaving Europe after the war, Sabina forged a new life in Australia, juggling a thriving design business, her family, and an unorthodox love life. But as time wore on, she began asking herself why had she survived when so many died? And what kind of justice fitted such crimes? In May 2005, when Germany opened its controversial Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, in Berlin, Sabina was chosen to speak as the voice of the six million dead. In her speech she noted that although the Holocaust had taken everything she valued, it had also taught her that hatred and discrimination are doomed to fail. Her ability to survive, to love, and to live well, has been her greatest triumph. 'I couldn't put down this engaging, honest story of love, loss and survival.' Book excerpt: Suicide and Agency offers an original and timely challenge to existing ways of understanding suicide. Through the use of rich and detailed case studies, the authors assembled in this volume explore how interplay of self-harm, suicide, personhood and agency varies markedly across site (Greenland, Siberia, India, Palestine and Mexico) and setting (self-run leprosy colony, suicide bomb attack, cash-crop farming, middle-class mothering). Rather than starting from a set definition of suicide, they empirically engage suicide fields-the wider domains of practices and of sense making, out of which realized, imaginary, or disputed suicides emerge. By drawing on ethnographic methods and approaches, a new comparative angle to understanding suicide beyond mainstream Western bio-medical and classical sociological conceptions of the act as an individual or social pathology is opened up. The book explores a number of ontological assumptions about the role of free will, power, good and evil, personhood, and intentionality in both popular and expert explanations of suicide. Suicide and Agency offers a substantial and ground-breaking contribution to the emerging field of the anthropology of suicide. It will appeal to a range of scholars and students, including those in anthropology, sociology, social psychology, cultural studies, suicidology, and social studies of death and dying.

Book excerpt: The Mahabharata is at once an archive and a living text, a sourcebook complete by itself and an open text perennially under construction. Driving home this striking contemporary relevance of the famous Indian epic, Mahabharata Now focuses on the issues of narration, aesthetics and ethics, as also their interlinkages. The cross-disciplinary essays in the volume imaginatively re-interpret the ‘timeless’ classic in the light of the pre-modern Indian narrative styles, poetics, aesthetic codes, and moral puzzles; the Western theories on modern ethics, aesthetics, metaphysics, psychoanalysis, and philosophy of science; and the contemporary social, ethical and political concerns. The essays are all united in their effort to situate the Mahabharata in the context of here and now without violating the sanctity of the ‘written text’ as we have it today. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of Indian and comparative philosophy, Indian and comparative literature, cultural studies, and history.

Book excerpt: Todays modern technology and scientific knowledge contradicts all religious dogma created in ancient times by ignorant and superstitious people who had just learned to write. Modern science can test the strength of ones faith and it can make him a skeptic, causing him to discard the religious beliefs of his family for generations past. Deep religious experiences (or self-induced delusions) can be explained by physical, psychological, biological and medical sciences today. Evil or Sin is the result of social and mental conditions and can be corrected with education and medication today and without the help of an imaginary God. To quote Mark Twain Faith is to believe in what you know for sure is not true. The GOD Dilemma is an unscientific investigation to justify believing in religion today and in particular the Christian faith. It argues that scientific and logical discussions about religion and the existence of God are futile; however, we cannot stop thinking about it. Humans are (maybe) born with a faith in Gods existence and with a conscience that tells them which is morally and ethically right and which is not. Author Thomas used to believe in religion, God, and Christianity through his teenage years, but even if he learned to ignore it during his 50 adult years, he never consciously discarded his Christian faith. He now shares his investigations and attempts to believe in Jesus Christ once again, despite todays knowledge of the universe and evolution and by ignoring the sanctimonious behavior of fundamentalist US Christians. In the international scene, Thomas believes that the US wars since WWII cannot be justified by the life and the teachings of Jesus Christ. There is an underlying moral claim by fundamentalist Christian Americans that its actions are justified by Jesus and Christianity. The new phenomenon called Christian Zionism which requires the removal of Palestinians from their homeland to create and expand Israel to enable the second coming of Christ, categorically contradicts the teachings of Jesus in the four Gospels. Zionism is based on the Old Testament Bible (OTB) and Revelations in the New Testament both of which are scientifically ridiculous. The OTB is also historically questionable (about a God interacting with his only chosen people in Middle East) and morally criminal (God sponsored and assisted armed robbery and genocide to create Israel ancient and modern) by todays legal and ethical standards. Why has the life and teachings of Jesus Christ not produced universal love and non-violence among Christians? Why are American Christians the most active supporters of (or not speaking out against) the wars, bombing and destruction by the USA since WWII? Are Ashkenazi European Jews really the descendants of Semitic slaves from Egypt? What were the reasons for anti-Semitism and the Holocaust in Christian Europe of the past? Why is the European Union and the US punishing the Palestinians for the Holocaust crimes in Europe? Can Gods orders in the Bible be legally used by the United Nations to recreate Israel again in the 20th century after 3000 years by getting rid of Palestinians? The book seeks to inform and provoke critical thinking of the readers through this investigation into religion and God and, in particular, the violent, intolerant and self-righteous behavior of Christians for centuries past and even in todays enlightened age using the source of the Christian religion the Bible.

From this point of view he examines the development of literary comedy in nineteenth-century England, and shows how comic modes and techniques were used to express and release the tensions of the middle class during periods of both rapid cultural change and relative stability. Anna-Rose thought she had met the man of her dreams. She moved across the country from her urban home to the small pioneering town of Wisteria, Texas, to be with her new husband. But soon the dream turns to a nightmare when his anger surfaces. She now lives in fear and walks on eggshells. After he causes her to miscarry several times, she decides enough is enough. Lindsey is fired from her job only to come home to find her husband in the middle of leaving her. He already filed for divorce. How could her day get worse? Instead of wallowing, she decides to shake up her life. She randomly picks a spot on the map. Wisteria, Texas sounds nice, and the abandoned house has all the potential for a quaint bed and breakfast, except for one thing, an extremely angry ghost haunts it. Journals and pictures left in the attic point to an odd coincidence. Lindsey and Anna-Rose could pass for twins, but they were born over 100 years apart. Their appearances explain why the ghost keeps calling her Anna-Rose and seems to be mistaking Lindsey for his wife. Before this spirit ruins her business, she must find a way to rid herself of him or this entire new life she’s built will be swept away.

Book excerpt: This is the first English translation of Dracontius’ Orestes, a Latin poem from Vandal North Africa that tells the mythic story of the cycle of murder and vengeance suffered by the family of Agamemnon. This book provides the reader with a highly accurate and readable English translation of the Orestes, which is accessible for both scholarly and non-scholarly readers; it is accompanied by a full introduction and notes. The introduction discusses the literary, educational and rhetorical culture of Vandal North Africa, as well as the most important literary aspects of the Orestes including its major themes, the main literary influences upon it and its structure and style. Roche also includes a biography of Dracontius and examines the Orestes’ relationship to his other poetry, to his Christianity and to the Vandals. The notes explain all important allusions to earlier literature, they highlight themes and issues raised by each section of the poem, and they provide a comprehensive overview of each section of the work so that all readers can understand and appreciate the Orestes against the backdrop of ancient and late-antique literature. Dracontius’ Orestes is of interest to students and scholars of ancient literature, especially the Latin poetry of late antiquity, ancient epics, the reception of tragedy and comparative literature. It is also suitable for scholars of late antiquity and the general reader interested in the ancient world more broadly.
