Book Synopsis Reading Books and Prints as Cultural Objects by : Evanghelia Stead
Download or read book Reading Books and Prints as Cultural Objects written by Evanghelia Stead and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes significantly to book, image and media studies from an interdisciplinary, comparative point of view. Its broad perspective spans medieval manuscripts to e-readers. Inventive methodology offers numerous insights into visual, manuscript and print culture: material objects relate to meaning and reading processes; images and texts are examined in varied associations; the symbolic, representational and cultural agency of books and prints is brought forward. An introduction substantiates methods and approaches, ten chapters follow along media lines: from manuscripts to prints, printed books, and e-readers. Eleven contributors from six countries challenge the idea of a unified field, revealing the role of books and prints in transformation and circulation between varying cultural trends, ‘high’ and ‘low’. Mostly Europe-based, the collection offers book and print professionals, academics and graduates, models for future research, imaginatively combining material culture with archival data, cultural and reading theories with historical patterns.

Download or read book Government Use of Print written by Saskia Limbach and published by Verlag Vittorio Klostermann. This book was released on 2021 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the most comprehensive account of official print in the Holy Roman Empire during the sixteenth century, this study investigates the use of the printing press as an increasingly important instrument in the expansion of authority. By comparing and contrasting publications printed in the Duchy of Wurttemberg and in the Free Imperial City of Cologne, the author traces the tentative beginnings of collaboration between rulers and printers. Making use of hitherto unexplored legal and business records, the study offers a sophisticated analysis of the early modern print trade which allows us to ascertain the business and market conditions that shaped the production of administrative and legal documents, such as police ordinances and announcements.

Book Synopsis Toward a Geography of Art by : Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann
Download or read book Toward a Geography of Art written by Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2004-03-14 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art history traditionally classifies works of art by country as well as period, but often political borders and cultural boundaries are highly complex and fluid. Questions of identity, policy, and exchange make it difficult to determine the "place" of art, and often the art itself results from these conflicts of geography and culture. Addressing an important approach to art history, Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann's book offers essays that focus on the intricacies of accounting for the geographical dimension of art history during the early modern period in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Toward a Geography of Art presents a historical overview of these complexities, debates contemporary concerns, and completes its exploration with a diverse collection of case studies. Employing the author's expertise in a variety of fields, the book delves into critical issues such as transculturation of indigenous traditions, mestizaje, the artistic metropolis, artistic diffusion, transfer, circulation, subversion, and center and periphery. What results is a foundational study that establishes the geography of art as a subject and forces us to reconsider assumptions about the place of art that underlie the longstanding narratives of art history.

Book Synopsis How the Page Matters by : Bonnie Mak
Download or read book How the Page Matters written by Bonnie Mak and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From handwritten texts to online books, the page has been a standard interface for transmitting knowledge for over two millennia. It is also a dynamic device, readily transformed to suit the needs of contemporary readers. In How the Page Matters, Bonnie Mak explores how changing technology has affected the reception of visual and written information. Mak examines the fifteenth-century Latin text Controversia de nobilitate in three forms: as a manuscript, a printed work, and a digital edition. Transcending boundaries of time and language, How the Page Matters connects technology with tradition using innovative new media theories. While historicizing contemporary digital culture and asking how on-screen combinations of image and text affect the way conveyed information is understood, Mak's elegant analysis proves both the timeliness of studying interface design and the persistence of the page as a communication mechanism.
Book Synopsis Printing a Mediterranean World by : Sean Roberts
Download or read book Printing a Mediterranean World written by Sean Roberts and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1482, the Florentine humanist and statesman Francesco Berlinghieri produced the Geographia, a book of over one hundred folio leaves describing the world in Italian verse, inspired by the ancient Greek geography of Ptolemy. The poem, divided into seven books (one for each day of the week the author “travels” the known world), is interleaved with lavishly engraved maps to accompany readers on this journey. Sean Roberts demonstrates that the Geographia represents the moment of transition between printing and manuscript culture, while forming a critical base for the rise of modern cartography. Simultaneously, the use of the Geographia as a diplomatic gift from Florence to the Ottoman Empire tells another story. This exchange expands our understanding of Mediterranean politics, European perceptions of the Ottomans, and Ottoman interest in mapping and print. The envoy to the Sultan represented the aspirations of the Florentine state, which chose not to bestow some other highly valued good, such as the city’s renowned textiles, but instead the best example of what Florentine visual, material, and intellectual culture had to offer.

Book Synopsis Court and Politics in Papal Rome, 1492–1700 by : Gianvittorio Signorotto
Download or read book Court and Politics in Papal Rome, 1492–1700 written by Gianvittorio Signorotto and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-03-21 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2002 book attempts to overcome the traditional historiographical approach to the role of the early modern papacy by focusing on the actual mechanisms of power in the papal court. The period covered extends from the Renaissance to the aftermath of the peace of Westphalia in 1648 - after which the papacy was reduced to a mainly spiritual role. Based on research in Italian and other European archives, the book concentrates on the factions at the Roman court and in the college of cardinals. The sacred college came under great international pressure during the election of a new pope, and consequently such figures as foreign ambassadors and foreign cardinals are examined, as well as political liaisons and social contacts at court. Finally, the book includes an analysis of the ambiguous nature of Roman ceremonial, which was both religious and secular: a reflection of the power struggle both in Rome and in Europe.

Book Synopsis Reading Revolutions - the Politics of Reading in Early Modern England by : Kevin Sharpe
Download or read book Reading Revolutions - the Politics of Reading in Early Modern England written by Kevin Sharpe and published by . This book was released on 2000-03-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book - the first comprehensive study of reading and politics in early modern England - examines how texts of that period were produced and disseminated and how readers interpreted and were influenced by them. Based on the voluminous reading notes of one gentleman, Sir William Drake, the book shows how readers formed radical social values and political ideas as they experienced civil war, revolution, republic and restoration. By analysing the strategies of Drake's reading practices, as well as those of several key contemporaries (including Jonson, Milton and Clarendon), Kevin Sharpe demonstrates how reading in the rhetorical culture of Renaissance England was a political act. He explains how Drake, for example, by reading and rereading classical and humanist works of Tacitus, Machiavelli, Guicciardini and Bacon, became the advocate of dissimulation, intrigue and realpolitik. Authority, Sharpe argues, was experienced, reviewed and criticised not only in the public forum but in the study, on the page and in the imagination, of early modern readers. 'Erudite, intelligent and fascinating ...a wonderful study of a subject central to the intellectual and cultural history of early modern England.' Anthony Grafton Kevin Sharpe was director of the Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies and professor of renaissance studies at Queen Mary, University of London. He is the author of 'The Personal Rule of Charles I', 'Selling the Tudor Monarchy' and 'Image Wars', all published by Yale University Press.

Book Synopsis The Introduction of Arabic Learning Into England by : Charles Burnett
Download or read book The Introduction of Arabic Learning Into England written by Charles Burnett and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Charles Burnett, in this pioneering study based on a close examination of surviving manuscripts, reveals some of the ways in which Arabic learning was introduced into England, dealing respectively with monastic and cathedral schools, private tutors of the nobility, and the early universities. It is a story of continuities: the successions of masters and pupils, the transmission of texts and the ideal systems of learning which determined programmes of translation over long periods. it is also a story of impressive scholarly endeavour over many generations, in which the achievements of individuals such as Adelard of Bath, Robert of Ketton, Daniel of Morley, Alfred of Shareshill and Michael Scot stand out.
