Book excerpt: Edited by the retired politician and archaeologist Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817-94), this 1891 publication reproduces the despatches of Michele Suriano and Marcantonio Barbaro, Venetian ambassadors to France in 1560-1 and 1561-4 respectively. Addressed to the doge of Venice, the documents provide valuable accounts of one of the most fascinating periods of French history, covering the death of Francis II, the accession of Charles IX, the regency of Catherine de' Medici, and the negotiations for the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots. The documents appear in their original Italian and in English translation. Evident in Suriano's and Barbaro's letters is the underlying tension between French Catholics and Protestant Huguenots, which would culminate in the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572. The book was produced for the Huguenot Society of London, and Layard, the Society's first president, was himself of Huguenot descent.

Book excerpt: The House of Guise was one of the greatest princely families of the sixteenth century, or indeed of any age. Today they are best remembered through the tragic life of one family member, Mary Queen of Scots. But the story of her Guise uncles, aunts and cousins is if anything more gripping - and certainly of greater significance in the history of Europe. The Guise family rose to prominence as the greatest enemy of the House of Habsburg and had dreams of a great dynastic empire that included the British Isles and southern Italy. They were among the staunchest opponents of the Reformation, played a major role in re-fashioning Catholicism at the Council of Trent before plunging France into a bloody civil war that culminated in the infamous St Bartholomew's Day Massacre. They protected English Catholic refugees, plotted to invade England and overthrow Elizabeth I, and ended the century by unleashing Europe's first religious revolution, before succumbing in a counter-revolution that made them martyrs for the Catholic cause. Martyrs and Murderers is the first comprehensive modern biography of the Guise family in any language. In it Stuart Carroll unravels the legends which cast them either as heroes or as villains of the Reformation, weaving a remarkable story that challenges traditional assumptions about one of Europe's most turbulent and formative eras.

Book Synopsis Princes, Politics and Religion, 1547-1589 by : N. M. Sutherland
Download or read book Princes, Politics and Religion, 1547-1589 written by N. M. Sutherland and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1984-07-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period following the treaty of Cateau-Cambresis and the death of Henry II in 1559 is of crucial importance in the history of France and of Europe; yet little that is satisfactory has been written about it. To this, the work of Dr N.M. Sutherland is a notable exception. Princes, Politics and Religion, 1547-1589 brings together all her major articles, not already reprinted elsewhere, together with an introduction and two completely new contributions. While mainly focusing on the immediate origins and early decades of the French civil wars, she also deals in a wider sense with the great ideological struggle of the sixteenth century.
