Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supply of reliable and safe water is a key challenge for developing countries, particularly India. Community management has long been the declared model for rural water supply and is recognised to be critical for its implementation and success. Based on 20 detailed successful case studies from across India, this book outlines future rural water supply approaches for all lower-income countries as they start to follow India on the economic growth (and subsequent service levels) transition. The case studies cover state-level wealth varying from US$2,600 to US$10,000 GDP per person and a mix of gravity flow, single village and multi-village groundwater and surface water schemes. The research reported covers 17 states and surveys of 2,400 households. Together, they provide a spread of cases directly relevant to policy-makers in lower-income economies planning to upgrade the quality and sustainability of rural water supply to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the context of economic growth.

Book excerpt: Rural–Urban Water Struggles compiles diverse analyses of rural–urban water connections, discourses, identities and struggles evolving in the context of urbanization around the world. Departing from an understanding of urbanization as a process of constant making and remaking of multi-scalar territorial interactions that extend beyond traditional city boundaries and that deeply reconfigure rural–urban hydrosocial territories and interlinkages, the chapters demonstrate the need to reconsider and trouble the rural–urban dichotomy. The contributors scrutinize how existing approaches for securing urban water supply – ranging from water transfers to payments for ecosystem services – all rely on a myriad of techniques: they are produced by, and embedded in, specific institutional and legal arrangements, actor alliances, discourses, interests and technologies entwining local, regional and global scales. The different chapters show the need to better understand on-the-ground realities, taking account of inequalities in water access and control, as well as representation and cultural-political recognition among rural and urban subjects. Rural–Urban Water Struggles will be of great use to scholars of water governance and justice, environmental justice and political ecology. This book was originally published as a special issue of Water International.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is an output of the Sida, DANIDA and DFID funded project entitled: Improving urban water and sanitation provision globally, through information and action driven locally. This project was carried out by IIED and five of its partners in Angola, Argentina, Ghana, India and Pakistan. The project aims to document innovative and inspiring examples of locally-driven water and sanitation initiatives in deprived urban areas. The project provides a basis for better understanding of how to identify and build upon local initiatives that are likely to improve water and sanitation services. The project also looks at how local organisations in those countries have managed to: scale up successful projects; work collaboratively; finance water and sanitation schemes; and use information systems such as mapping to drive local action and monitor improvements.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department for International Development DFID commissioned this Guidance Manual from the WELL Resource Centre to assist staff and partners to develop effective and sustainable water supply and sanitation programmes. It represents collaboration across a range of professions within the Department and from key UK professionals in the sector. It details inter-disciplinary approaches to planning and implementation of partnership-based programmes. The Manual comprises three chapters and appendices. These take the reader from an overview of the sector, through specific development perspectives, to detailed recommendations for each stage of the project cycle. Chapter 1 is an introduction to water supply and sanitation projects and sets the scene. It describes the WS&S sector with particular focus on the development of services for the poor in both urban and rural areas. Emphasis is placed on the importance of co-operation and partnership and the chapter also introduces the DFID programme and project process. Chapter 2 Principles and practice starts with an inter-disciplinary analysis of key issues and then sets out recommended approaches under seven perspectives: social development; health; environmental sustainability; economic and financial perspectives; institutional perspectives; technical aspects; and hygiene promotion and sanitation promotion. These are explored in some detail so that professional staff in DFID and its partners will gain a better understanding of all the aspects and not just their own speciality. Chapter 3 Water supply and sanitation in the DFID programme and project cycle is the 'how to' part of the manual which brings together the disciplinary perspectives at each stage of the project cycle. The key issues to be taken into account are set out in a helpful 'question and recommendation' format. Appendices include examples of logical frameworks for water supply and sanitation projects.
